Tucson: Cold Wet Noses Fundraiser – May 2012

Mimzy is a Cold Wet Noses rescue

Mimzy rehomed by Cold Wet Noses

During the month of May, Beading Divas to the Rescue will sell one-of-a kind beaded bracelets to benefit Cold Wet Noses.

Every month the Divas for which I am one (Beading and otherwise) choose a different animal charity to raise money for. There are seven women who are the original Beading Divas (Angy, Cynthia, Glenda, Michelle, Karyn, Lizzie, and Loren) who came together to raise $14,300 for Lizzie whose greyhounds were injured in a catastrophic car accident. Dogs recovered and now doing fine. There are hundreds of honorary beading divas who donate beads, help make bracelets, and sometimes sell to coworkers or friends.

On our birthday month, one of the original seven divas can choose the group of the month without input or voting from the other six. May is my birthday month and I chose Cold Wet Noses.

I chose CWN because they are so out there. Cold Wet Noses is all volunteer and pulls dogs from PACC’s kill line often at the 11th hour. In 2011, CWN rehomed 366 dogs! That’s akin to a dog a day!

I also chose CWN because in December of last year, I wanted a 9 year old dog named Reagan to find a home. I saw his sad photo on the PACC Pet Facebook page. His owner died and gave Reagan to a friend (some friend). For no other reason, other than he was old, Reagan was going to die. I asked CWN to take Reagan and they said they would with a foster home. I have a big mouth on Facebook and blogged about that and lo and behold a friend of a friend (Tina Roose) rose to the occasion. She reached out and fostered Reagan and became a volunteer at CWN. She is my hero. I am honoring her by choosing CWN. Tina has since adopted Reagan.

More about Cold Wet Noses:
Started in 2005 but became an official non profit in 2010. Since their inception they have rehomed approximately 1,650 dogs!

In 2011
–$42,000 veterinarian bills
–Paid $6,100 for dog food, medications and other pet supplies; –CWN also receives dog food donations from PET CLUB and/or buys it from Costco ($30/40 lb bag).
–Currently they have 57 foster homes but that number changes daily

Cold Wet Noses Wish List
–more fold down wire crates – mostly size medium
–another pop up tent for adoption events
–a storage shed
–more foster homes
–more volunteers to help walk dogs at PACC

One-of-a-kind coiled bracelets cost $20 and every bracelet comes with a paw charm. Bracelets make great heartfelt gifts for MOTHER’S DAY on May 13. The entire $20 goes directly to CWN. You can pay with cash or a check made out directly to the charity. Be generous!

LOCATION:  Pima County Fair Grounds, I-10 & Houghton Road in Tucson

Tucson no-kill shelter – HOPE news alert, wish list

Trixie is ready for her forever home

Trixie says: Adopt Me!

Appeal from HOPE Animal Shelter Executive Director Susan Scherl:

We have very little money in the bank.

Yes, it is affecting everyone…even the critters. I know we are all suffering from the woes of the country’s financial state. I know this is a difficult time to give but it is desperation time for HOPE Animal Shelter. We are in a crisis. There is very little money left in our accounts and despite the fact that we have cut down on expenses we are finding it more difficult to stretch what we have. Veterinary expenses have skyrocketed. When you commit to the no-kill philosophy, your medical costs can be very high. HOPE does whatever it needs to keep our animals happy and healthy.

Please donate what you can…every little (and big) bit helps. There are many ways to donate. You can click the Donate Now , send a check, or call with your credit card information.

Your generosity in the past has helped us through some trying times. I hope you will help again.
Thank you.

Gratefully yours,

Susan Scherl
Executive Director

Wishlist: Tucson Wildlife Center

Tucson Wildlife Center

Wishlist: Tucson Wildlife Center

During these economically trying times 501(c)3 charities are fighting to stay afloat. Here in Tucson, we are privy to a very special place which rescues, rehabilitates, and releases (when possible) wildlife — bobcats, javelinas, coyotes, owls, pelicans, wild birds, eagles, raccoons, etc.

The most amazing concept about Tucson Wildlife Center is that it’s all volunteer — including the veterinarians and orthopedic surgeons who donate their valuable professional time.

TWC services include an emergency helpline operating 24/7, capture and transportation of injured animals, 24-hour emergency room, volunteer DVM on call, rehabiliation, release, and education. All services are provided free to the public.

Like any non-profit organization, donations and volunteers are key to their survival. But if you cannot afford to give money and/or time, the next best thing is to see what is on the “wishlist.” You just might have a case in your garage or will remember to pick up some bargains on your next visit to the big box store.

Tucson Wildlife Center WISHLIST:
–kitty litter, unscented Scoop Away
–paper towels
–office supplies
–garbage bags
–Ziploc bags
–GPS
–hand soap
–hand lotion
–white towels
–gas gift cards
–ultrasonic cleaner
–paper shredder
–peanuts, bagged unsalted
–chicken thighs and legs, frozen
–chicken breasts, frozen

During the month of August, these items (except the perishables) may be dropped off at Silver Sea Jewelry located at 330 N. 4th Avenue (624-9954) or contact TWC.

Also during the month of August, Beading Divas to the Rescue will be selling one-of-a-kind bracelets made with donated beads (one size fits most adults) for $20. The proceeds of bracelet sales go directly to the Tucson Wildlife Center.

eye candy for a good cause

You can buy bracelets online via Etsy.com (add $4 for S&H)

And on Sunday – August 7 only…

Photo is courtesy of Casa de los Gatos – Speedway is a pretty and sweet tabby cat. She was once a very shy girl but has become very friendly and relaxed. She had lived in fear of being terrorized by big dogs in her former home, and had stayed under a bed for years when her owners decided she would be better off somewhere else. She is about 10 years old. Speedway likes petting but not being picked up or having her lower back/tail touched. She does love to sit on laps and would be best as an only pet, absolutely no dogs!
