Just watched the race online and mercifully nobody fell down but there seemed to be a lot of whipping. “Sure, it hurts a horse,” said the renowned veterinarian Dr.
Alex Harthill of Louisville, Ky. “Repeated whipping should be outlawed.
You don’t know how a horse will react to the whip. Some respond by running
faster. Some stop. I think it’s good as a way to get their attention. But

Thank you, Karyn for your continued humane and compassionate reporting on the shameful ways we treat animals for ‘sport’ or just plain meanness. Re horse racing, the biggest problem is age – they are racing 2-3 years before their bones are fully formed because breeders/owners won’t spend the $ to feed them until they are mature physically. It’s always about the $.

Great post, Karyn. The abuses of horse racing are ignored because of the wealth associated with the “sport”; greyhound racing falls under the radar of public consciousness because it’s more associated with poor people. In both cases, because they are only animals, the illegal doping get less attention than doping in human sports activities like baseball and bicycling. Keep writing. With you and others reminding us, eventually the message will sink in.

This year I have seen dog pups being sold out of cardboard boxes at both the Tanque Verde Swap meet and the Tohono O’Odham swap meet. I don’t know if this kind of selling is exempt from the street-side animal sales statute, but they ought not be exempt. Hopefully, in the not too distant future street-side animal sales will no longer be allowed anywhere in the Arizona. The sales I have witnessed at swap meets didn’t appear to me to be any more animal friendly than on the street sales. I hope someone points that out to our good legislators.
