It was a kinder more gentle Congress on the Corner when my friend Diana and her greyhound Buddy met up with Gabrielle Giffords at the Safeway on Golf Links Road in April 2008.
We wanted to talk to her about greyhound racing cruelty but her jurisdiction was broader than our little corner of South Tucson. Nevertheless, she posed with Buddy and shared that she used to have a greyhound when growing up and what great dogs they were.
As I watched tonight’s program with Diane Sawyer, I couldn’t help but feel sad for her loss and our collective loss as her constituents. She was such a fighter in the political arena and is still a fighter in her path to get well.
The footage of her recovery was amazing. I look forward to reading the book and being further inspired.
I hate the thought that our justice system gives that piece of shit Jared Loughner a defense, a lawyer, and the ability for him to utter “not guilty” when a brave and brazen gray-haired woman wrestled him to the ground. What is he not guilty of — killing and injuring more people?
(Photo is courtesy of Diana Hansen. Buddy the greyhound raced 170 times. He started out in Wheeling and then went to Phoenix and somehow ended up in Tucson, mercifully. Buddy also obtained his assistance dog status from Handi-Dogs in 2009. After the hard life of a racing greyhound, he should’ve enjoyed a longer couch potato existence. Instead, he died from sarcoma of the eye far too young.)
