Tucson greyhound enjoys good life

Jett Greyhound = Bed Hog

New Years Resolutions from the Dog

–Whine, whine, whine…it drives her nuts.

–Pay more attention to fallen cactus to avoid owies on the walk.

–Hog the bed; stretch & spread out; hog the covers.

–Stretch out on the couch in such a way where there’s no room for her or the other dog.

–Reserve kisses for her only after making a public display of licking my butt or burping.

–Counter surf more discreetly.

–Bark aggressively while on our walk when she stops to talk to the neighbors.

–Have my way with the roll of toilet paper. Drag and decorate DIY style throughout the house. Martha Stewart would be proud.

–Appear semi interested when she talks to me even though she is only talking to herself a lot.

–Greet strangers with gusto. (Notice ME!)

–Try to understand that cats are from Venus and I am from Mars.

–Eat more C.O.O.K.I.E.S.

–Guard the house (and mean it).

–Wag more, bark less.

–Give you more unconditional love than last year.

–Be a good boy…well, maybe, perhaps, we’ll see…

There were lots of funny videos this year. These are my favorite top seven.

Are cats better than dogs? You be the judge. Even though I’m a “dog person” the arguments are pretty convincing.

Here I thought my greyhound Lily was the best counter surfer ever but this dog surpasses her skills.

Everybody go surfing, surfing USA

Gotta love this dog’s fancy foot work.

VW has some of the best creative minds around for not only cars but Super Bowl commercials.

Tucson Tails: Bad news for animals, 2012 roundup

Too many pet food recalls

2012 – too many pet food recalls

2012 brought good news and bad news, as far as the animals are concerned. The following is a partial roundup of less than stellar news in Tucson and beyond (working backwards).

Lost dogs not found alive
Most recently, in December two Labrador pups that were lost around the Westin La Paloma golf course were not found in time. Their remains were found for closure’s sake. The good people of Tucson Cold Wet Noses and other volunteers spent many days looking and hoping. It was not to be.

Euthanized
If you follow PACC Pets Need You on Facebook, you will see some gut-wrenching posts about dogs that will be PTS if they are not spoken for by a certain time of day. This is heart-breaking. A volunteer-run page works quite hard to get these dogs and cats fostered and adopted by numerous rescue groups and social media has helped make great strides. Still too many adoptable pets die. This needs to change in 2013.

Greyhound racing
Greyhound racing has been in the news lately; as usual, none of it good.

Dead bear
17 year old polar bear found dead at Reid Park Zoo

Greyhound racing
Arizona Department of Racing makes excuses why they do not honor public record requests for greyhound racing injury reports.

Dead elephant
The Tucson public was in an uproar at the Reid Park Zoo for shipping Connie the elephant off to the San Diego Zoo. Zoo management said she would thrive there. Now Connie is dead.

DPS dog dies
Jeg, a K-9 working for the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), was left in a hot car by his handler & partner on Wednesday, July 11. Jeg died.

Circus cruelty
Thinking about going to the circus with live animals? Think again. Watch the video. Think again.

Greyhound racing
While it’s good news that this greyhound was found, it’s bad news that he was left after falling out of a transport vehicle on his way from one race track to another.

Greyhound racing
One would think this decoupling bill passed as a business bill in the AZ legislature is good news but it is still business as usual at Tucson Greyhound Park and that’s bad news.

Covance cruelty
It’s good news for the Chandler residents but bad news for the animals which were sent to other facilities as ongoing torturous science experiments.

Dog cruelty bill
Is anyone surprised that a dog cruelty bill passed in our legislature?

Pet food recalls
Numerous pet food recalls throughout the year. Recalls include bird food, pig ears, chicken jerky, dog biscuits, beef bully sticks, cat treats, kibble and more. Pet owners even sued pet food makers.

Luck?
How many horses have to die on a HBO series before they cancel the show?

Worst
Tucson likes to be on the best lists like best place to bicycle, best resorts, best place to vacation, best restaurants, etc. Our zoo ranks on the 10-worst-zoos-for-elephants list.

Greyhound racing
Skechers made a major branding faux pas by filming their Super Bowl ad at that crumbling dog park in South Tucson.

Greyhounds: Twas the Night before Christmas

Sunday, December 23rd, 2012
Where's Rudolph when I need him?

Where’s Rudolph when I need him?

Greyhounds: Twas the Night before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the town
Not a creature was stirring, not even a greyhoun;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that an animated fat man would soon be there.

The pups were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of meaty marrow bones danced in their heads;
And me in my flannel jammies, and my human in her sweats,
Had just settled in for some cozy evening pets.

When out on the street there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Paws up to the window I flew like a flash,
Nudged open the blinds and threw up the stash.

The moon on the needles of the cacti did glow,
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my sweet brown eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and 20 tiny sight hound reindeer.

With a little old driver, so nimble and quick,
I knew in a micro-second it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than coursers the greyhounds they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

Now Girlfriend, Harmony, Opa, Misty, Beams, Bird, Caper, Anabel, Kasey and Cart-ER
On Saffron, Opal, Riley, Spirit, Donut, Winston, Mahalo, Franklin, Bill and Ride-R
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! GO POTTY! Dash away all!

As dry leaves that before the wild winds fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the greyt hounds they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, just for good dogs like you.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I wiggled my velvet ears, and looked around
Down the chimney the jolly fat man came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all covered with dog hairs and soot;
A bundle of Petsmart toys he had flung on his back,
And I wondered if he had any stuffed Kongs in his sack?

His eyes — how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like apples, his nose like a cherry!
I sniffed his leg and wondered where he had been?
Did he visit Beagles, Labs, Terriers, mutts, and kit-tens?

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke encircled his head like a pukey wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly elf,
And I ROOED when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
My tail wagged and I wondered if I was getting fed?

He spoke not a word, nor did I dare bark,
He filled all the stockings; Gee, it was a real lark,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving me a nod, then up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, and gave his hounds a whistle,
Away they all flew, like the crack of a thistle.
But I heard him yell, as he drove out of sight,
“HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL CREATURES BIG AND SMALL, SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS, PUT THOSE DAMN PUPPY MILLS and BACKYARD BREEDERS OUT OF BUSINESS, MAKE PIMA COUNTY NO-KILL (it’s being accomplished in cities across the country, why not Tucson?), AND LET’S END TUCSON DOG RACING IN 2013…

…AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!”

Roo! Roo!    (the end)

The above was inspired by Jett Greyhound, my beloved dog who just turned 7 years young this past week. He’s a loving, goofy boy who makes me laugh every day. His birthday is December 19. In 2009, Phoenix Greyhound Park closed on Dec. 19. He raced there before racing in Tucson for a total of 155 races. Jett is one lucky dog! He has his own blog called Jett’s Stream.

Enjoy this hilarious animated JibJab Christmas song.

Going Home, Greyhounds Leaving Tucson Dog Track

Going Home, Greyhounds Leaving Tucson Dog Track

For the month of December 2012, Beading Divas to the Rescue is raising funds for Going Home, a project of the Greyhound Protection League. Project Going Home provides safe transport for dogs leaving Tucson Greyhound Park as well as veterinary services when required, tick & flea medications, supplies, and food. So far dozens of dogs have been transported to a few adoption groups in the West. The goal is to get more dogs, many more dogs off the track. If you’re a TGP kennel operator or a breeder/dog owner with dogs racing at Tucson Greyhound Park, please  contact GPL directly. Confidentiality assured.

You can buy bracelets this weekend at the 4th Avenue Fair under the Silver Sea booth which is directly across from 330 N. 4th Avenue; look for the mermaid in the window and then look directly to the booth. Bracelets are always for sale at this store.

Every one of a kind beautiful handmade bracelet is made from donated beads. Bracelets cost $20 and are made from memory wire for easy on/off. Each bracelet comes with a paw charm. Bracelets make great gifts for animal lovers and women with a penchant for bling. The entire $20 goes to the charity. Cash or checks made payable to GPL (earmark Going Home) are accepted. (Sorry no credit cards)

Greyhound Protection League has been in existence since 1991 and spent many of its early years exposing the widespread use of greyhounds in research and obtaining the dogs’ release to adoption groups. You can read more about their efforts here.

California dreaming

California dreaming

Recently GPL was contacted when someone found greyhound puppies that were thrown in a sealed trash bag in Texas. Puppies were cared for by a Texas adoption group and then flown to a California adoption group where they have since found loving homes. Greyhound Protection League was the organization that busted Tucson Greyhound Park for the heinous 140+ missing greyhounds in 2005-2006. GPL also was responsible for flying more than 250 Guam racing greyhounds to the United States in 2008-2010 when that track closed in Guam and gave the dogs away like kittens on a corner.

Beading Divas to the Rescue is honored to be selling bracelets to help Tucson racing greyhounds leave the track safely and find forever homes far and wide through suitable adoption groups.

Dog Book Review: DASH: Bitch of the Year

Thursday, November 15th, 2012
Read the book

Read the book

How could I not want to read a book that has a smiling black greyhound on the cover even though I detest when people call female dogs “bitches?”

The book, DASH: Bitch of the Year, was a review copy supplied by the Independent Publishers Group. The author Andrew Dilger wrote a first-person tale about one year in his life after adopting a retired racing greyhound in the United Kingdom.

I have to say I was lukewarm in the beginning because there was too much information about greyhound lineage which would be interesting to me if it was not about greyhound racing.  The book is also written in first person and I find that style of writing tiring for chapters on end. In the case of Mr. Dilger, he was quite animated which is more British in nature and also used some slang which was unfamiliar to me. I almost needed a glossary. One particular word, “flabbercocked”  stuck in my mind. According to the Urban Dictionary, it means:  A person who is really interesting but a bit of a dick!

I guess that could be said about the author by the author himself because he kept trying to do what I felt was impossible. Greyhound adopters are repeatedly told never to let a greyhound off leash unless in an enclosed area. Why? Because a car backfiring, a twig snapping, a loud noise and the dog takes off running. On the third stride, a greyhound can run as fast as 42 mph or so the propaganda says. Not once, not twice, but three times did the author try letting the dog off leash in wide open spaces and none with good results.

I don’t mean to male bash here but once I was at the gym on the elliptical machine. I was wearing a greyhound rescue t-shirt and some guy got on next me and started talking about his greyhound. I listened politely and then he conspires to tell me how he walks to his mailbox with his greyhound off leash. Another time I went looking for a lost greyhound whose owner said he always let her and his Labs off leash in the Tanque Verde wash. One day the Labs came back; the greyhound did not. She spent the night at PACC with cactus stuck all over her.

I digress.

Greyhounds have sad stories. The first part of their lives suck as they are racing machines whether it’s in the UK or the US or beyond. I would venture to guess that more than half of the people who adopt greyhounds do so out of pity. The author did and I did as did most of my Tucson greyhound adopter friends. At least we have something in common. In the author’s case, the breeder brought the hound over and they had tea and a chat about Dash. In my case I rescued a greyhound from an adoption group.

The author and his future wife gradually learned about Dash but Dilger was the primary caretaker because he worked from home. The author soon learned after consulting several websites that greyhounds didn’t necessarily want to please, say like Labs or Goldens and that greyhounds are a tad more independent — like cats.

As the chapters progress, the author begins to learn more about the breed and to realize there is no one cookie cutter solution to raising a dog. More importantly, there is no such thing as a perfect dog. Phew. While Dilger and Dash bond, he’s also planning a wedding which I thought was hilarious because how many brides would let their grooms plan the wedding? And while planning the wedding, he had the (bright) idea for Dash to be the ring bearer.

In the end, I do give him credit because he finally hones up to his mistakes.  Also in the beginning of the book, he almost applauds greyhound racing even though Dash was a pity adoption. On the last page, he says, “From an animal welfare perspective, the world of greyhound racing is a deeply troubling one. The facts and figures on http://greyhounds.uk.org are a necessary sober reminder that a greyhound’s life can be as short as the odds are long.”

The link provided in the book didn’t work. Instead try:  Greyhound Action and Greyt Exploitations.

If you are the least bit curious as to acclimating your life with an endearing ex racing greyhound and how to plan a wedding UK style, then this book is for you. Dilger dedicates the book to Sarah (his wife) and Dash…in that order.  The book is available on Amazon.
