Lawmaker Advocates for Dog Fighting, Euthanizing Athletes

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

Politics might be dog eat dog but GOP Rep. Steve King (Iowa) advocates for dog fighting.

His reasoning:  We let people fight each other as in boxing, why should we put dogs over people? Why Rep. King? Why? Why? Why? Because people make the decision to get into the ring and punch each others brains out; dogs don’t have that choice.

The Onion wrote a story about this - Gymnast Shawn Johnson Put To Sleep After Breaking Leg. Sure, why not? If you euthanize animals used for sport, why not injured athletes? Immediately my mind turned to horse racing and greyhound racing, where horses and greyhounds break legs among other devastating injuries and where horses and greyhounds are euthanized, although some broken leg dogs do find their way into loving homes.

But back to Representative Steve King who sponsored an amendment to the House Farm Bill which is devastating to food safety laws that protect millions of Americans from illness. (Hey King, the FDA already issues at least a half dozen recalls a day – most recently onions, cantaloupes, products with the recalled onions, allergens, foreign materials in baked goods, etc.) The King Amendment would essentially prevent states from developing strong independent health, safety, and cruelty standards, even if local voters want them.

King also advocates for cockfighting. He advocates for animal cruelty. He probably thinks it made perfect sense to strap a dog in a crate on top of a car and drive it to Canada instead of putting the dog in a car like most of our cherished pets travel.
