Adam Lambert’s AMA Antics: It’s our own fault

Should Adam Lambert apologize for his American Music Awards performance?

Should Adam Lambert apologize for his American Music Awards performance?

Former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert is at the center of a lot of controversy over his performance at the 2009 American Music Awards on ABC.  He kissed a guy, groped male and female dancers, dragged a girl around by a leash, and gyrated (with a guy’s face against his crotch).  Oh ya, and he flipped everyone off too.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, Lambert said, “Female performers have been doing this for years — pushing the envelope about sexuality — and the minute a man does it, everybody freaks out.”

Is he right?

The Parent’s Television Council urged viewers to complain.  About 1,500 complaints were promptly phoned into ABC about the AMA performance and Adam Lambert’s performance on Good Morning America was canceled.

I totally think we had this coming, and don’t understand why we are complaining NOW.  Why are we so shocked when we’ve become so permissive and accepting of behavior that pushes the limits.  Our current society is built on the notion that that sex sells and advertising messages are everywhere and get bolder every day.

I’m not trying to be a prude.  I can understand sex as art.  However sex is often disguised as art or freedom, when it’s just being used as a tool to sell or influence.

Anybody look at the little girl’s sections of clothing stores?  When I was younger I would have thought most of it was hooker attire.  I bet you know a little girl under eight who has mastered the art of gyrating like their favorite artist (and their moms are so proud).  It’s okay for women over 35 (even married women) to want to be cougars or a MILF (and purchase things to help them become one).  Some daytime soap operas come pretty close to soft porn. How many times in everyday life have you seen the image of a woman or girl sensuously licking a lollipop, popsicle or their own finger?  Or a woman straddling something in a sexual way?  How many little kids see it?  We seem to accept this.

The line in the sand has been moved time and time again.  Sex is to entertainment and advertising as sugar, salt and fat are to fast food.  They are all lures they hope we are fish-brained enough to bite.

Is Adam Lambert’s behavior at the AMA performance unprecedented?  Madonna has shared open mouth kisses with Brittany Spears and Christina Aguilera.  Madonna and Janet Jackson are crotch grabbers and have had their dancers in submissive sexually-suggestive positions with groping.  During a live performance at the MTV Video Awards the musical act t.A.T.u. included hundreds of young-looking girls dressed as school girls who stripped down to what appeared to be underwear and they gyrated and interacted in ways that were suggestive of an orgy.  The act concluded with lots of girl-on-girl kissing.

Katy Perry’s song “I Kissed a Girl” (and I liked it) has enjoyed much commercial success and was nominated for a Grammy.  It was even nominated for favorite song at the 2009 Kid’s Choice Awards.  This is a song that includes lyrics like “I got so brave, drink in hand, lost all discretion”  and “No I don’t even know your name. It doesn’t matter.  You’re my experimental game.”  What if Adam Lambert had tried to sing “I Kissed a Boy” (and I liked it) at the AMA’s?  Would it be nominated for a Kid’s Choice award?  I have a hard time seeing that.

So why did the malleable line in the sand become a barricade for Adam Lambert?  On Wednesday, Sherri Shepherd of ABC’s The View offered an explanation on the controversy:

Shepherd said, “The thing about Adam versus Janet and Madonna, is he hasn’t earned that position yet.”  This was met with applause from the audience.  She continued, “He just came off American Idol.  I’m not saying you earn a right to do that…but what I’m saying…is we’ve grown up with Madonna.  We didn’t even know Adam Lambert.”

Say what?

I agreed when Whoopie Goldberg responded that was bull and that it should be one standard for everybody.  However I don’t remember that drawing much applause from the audience.

Lambert’s actions certainly aren’t hurting his album sales and he is a hot topic now.  The stunts by Madonna and Janet have helped them pull through stale moments in their careers.  Art or manipulation?

When Lambert’s appearance was cancelled on ABC’s morning show, CBS snatched him up for the Early Show.  However, curiously, it’s been reported when they showed clips of both Lambert’s and Madonna’s same-sex open-mouth kisses, Lambert’s clip was blurred out.  Madonna’s was not.  According to Extratv, when questioned why they did that, a rep for CBS said, “We gave this some real thought.  The Madonna image is very familiar and appeared countless times including many times on morning television.  The Adam Lambert image is a subject of great current controversy, has not been nearly as widely disseminated, and for all we know, may still lead to legal consequences.”

Did Adam Lambert cross the line, or did the novelty of his maleness show a problem we had become blind to in a new light?  He feels the outrage is due to being a gay male.  Maybe.  I think it was more of a shock to see a male, with all the perceived physical power that entails, than a woman committing those acts.  It’s become so “uncool” to bring up questions of what is too sexual for the general public, that we’ve let so much slip through the cracks in a non-threatening way.  But is it fair?

I wasn’t offended by the performance, rather it induced eye rolling.  These music award shows usually feature something shocking so I expected something like it.  His antics reminded me of a high schooler resorting to sex jokes or sexy dress for easy attention when they have nothing else to offer.  Hmmm, reminds me of many current music videos.  The thing is Lambert did have more to offer and the performance itself actually suffered, but the statement he’s trying to make is a valid one.

I’m the type of person who has TMI (too much information) limits regardless of who it is.  I don’t want to see anybody groping and slobbering over each other in public, regardless of sexual orientation.  I wouldn’t want me, my parents, or my best friend to show off  sex moves in a public venue aimed at a general audience as Lambert did.  However, he is definitely not the first and it is not uncommon.

In spite of the controversy, Lambert refuses to apologize.  Should he?  I don’t know.  As I wrote before, I think we asked for it and it’s our own fault.

PS:  I think I need to mention, Lambert claims the moves were unrehearsed and unplanned.  Did the dancers know they were going to be grabbed, fondled, and a face planted into his crotch?  I haven’t seen that question raised.  Hopefully it’s because most of us don’t believe him.

Adam Lambert was fired from ABC for a kiss and replaced with Chris Brown, a felon who beat his girlfriend.

Does that not say it all???

Pretty scary that we live in a country that has made the grave mistake of demonizing sex instead of violence.

    • Bjay

Ya, that totally did not make any sense replacing him with Brown.    What a message.

      • Ana

Although I was not entertained by Lambert’s performance, I wasn’t either when Madonna kissed Britney.  I didn’t realize that Lambert was replaced by Chris “Beat Her Down” Brown.  That is horrible.  I refuse to listen to any of Brown’s music & change the station if he ever comes on.  I’m sure he’s not the only “entertainer” (who I liked, before his incident) who is guilty of this behavior, but because he knowingly did it in such a publicized manor, makes him that much more disgusting to me.

  • leftfield

The problem is not too much sex in our culture, it is that sexuality has been perverted by America’s puritan and schizophrenic attitude about sex.  If we had a healthy and open attitude about human sexuality and about homosexuality, escapades like Lambert’s would not be something one could attract attention with by violating our rather perverse “norms”.

Replacing Lambert with Brown just says to me that, in this culture, violence against women is more acceptable than two men kissing.

      LAMBERT LAMENT       .ms.11.2009

Adam, you broke the trustwith a performance that crossed from thrill to porn, but once,…IS…all it takesto show that there is little distinction between the two…for you. If your art is just about you, and a few …that’s cool, your choice. I will miss you, Adam.Never before so swiftlyhas anyone ever drew all eyesplanet-wide!But I can’t follow where you’re leadingwithout breaking my inner core. You broke the trustof families who rallied –from blue-haired grandmas and tweetingboomers and teens, and babies dancing  –united and celebrating this crazy-wild siren of sound. We didn’t care if you were blue, or green, or gay;You bridged the gap. Never before has anyone belonged to so many so swiftly at once! Now you broke the trust. And I am sad,‘cause I can’t go back to the fun you spunand the thrill you willedand freedom to share news of you everywheredrawing old friends closer; making new ones across the worlddancing in the castle you built; we were united by you. If you think your art is just about you, …that’s cool, your choice. You’ll get your sales, and crowds of third-fingers, as you have shown as your corebut it’s no longer fun – for everyone. You broke the trust.Santa will sadly be yanking CDs from some stockingsYoung fans will rebel, not understanding the ban,and why they can’t follow, while peers whose families don’t scanmimick your moves in school yards and dance. Those on the fence will slide to your sideand derive that it’s ok to publicly suck and f##### family-core genecide. You were, to us, so much better than that. Adam, if you think your art was just about you, …

      • Linda Foy

Again, so well said, Marie! I feel so sad that I will have to deprive myself and others amonst my family & friends of what could have been a beautiful gift.
P.S. I am sure the majority of the gay community did not appreciate his behaviour either as most of the gay & lesbian friends I have do no depect this kind of behaviour anymore that the “straight” community.

        • Unsure

I agree with you both.  Adam can sing, but what he showed on the AMA’s showed he’s not about the singing, he wants something to show, just very disappointed in him.  PS  -  I didn’t care for Janet Jackson’s performance either.  Our country has got to change, what are we showing our kids, they will be the leaders one day, is this what we want them to lead.  I don’t.  I believe in America, God, and our military..  I am proud to be an American, but hope there are not many more like Adam Lambert, somethings have to change and it starts with one person and then another.  We need to come together, not go apart.  I want a future for my daughter, but not what I see coming.  WE NEED CHANGE – lets come together to change our Country, the land of the free, the land of hope.  Adams performance was sickening.

    • Amy

      leftfield,
Are you saying that Chris Brown should not have the opportunity to get his self together? I keep hearing that most feel that as a society we have accepted what Chris has done and I don’t believe that to be the case. When will he ever be permitted to try and rebuild his life.  Sexual perverseness and domstic violence in these two cases are different. I really don’t know alot about either artist, but I am amazed at the discussions I am reading. Interesting….

      • leftfield

Nope, not saying that at all.  But, if you take one artist off the schedule because of a past behavior and then replace him with another artist, you are inviting people like myself to look at his past behavior and say, “WTF?”.

      • Linda Foy

        Amy – you said it so well – I am 66, mother & grandmother – I followed
Adam on American Idol – he should have won and was pepared to purchase at least 6 of his new CD’s for myself and as Christmas gifts, however, in good faith I cannot support his or anyone else’s similar behaviour (male or female) and will therefore have to refrain from purchasinfg his CD. Such an abuse of an incrediable talent!
        Linda, Edmonton, AB

    • Bjay

I agree it is a confusing and schizophrenic attitude.  For instance, companies selling Barbie versions of bump and grind artists or the Bratz dolls to little kids while still trying to maintain a wholesome attitude – but using the sexual aspect to sell.  Or cartoon princesses who are extremely well-endowed with cleavage and bellies showing.  I think it’s a confusing message for little kids and they need an adult to help them sort it out or explain the reason why it’s like that.

I carpool some kids, and one day one of the little girls (about 7) decided she was going to tell a boy she liked him.  In preparation, she lowered her neckline,  rolled up the bottom of her shirt, exposing her belly, and pulled down her pants to the point where she was almost exposing herself down below and you could see her butt crack in the back.

I was like, what on earth are you doing?  And she showed me a doll she had.

Here’s a good example.  I love Beyonce, and think in a lot of ways she’s a good role model.  However, again some aspects (dress and dance moves) are confusing to really little kids.  Here is her extremely popular Put a Ring on It video:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1nixzYHDus

And here’s a baby doing the moves:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk42wSXXGq8

I don’t know, it bothers me a little, but maybe it’s just me.

YouTube is packed with little girls doing the routine.

Half the little girls (ages 4-8) in my son’s class in school know the routine.  The school has skate nights at a Skate Country and they do the moves there.

It’s on TV.  Beyonce is loved.  Their friends do it.  How to explain to them there might be perverts watching them bump and grind and that maybe they should not be doing those parts of the dance anyway.  It’s confusing for them. Plus I’m not their mom so I can’t say anything, and honestly their moms ask them to do it, to show how good they are at it.

Instead of having a healthy attitude and knowledge of sex and what is sexy, many kids learn stripper moves and dress and think that’s what they need to do to be sexy or find someone because that’s what they see.

I think if people and kids had the basis of a healthy and knowledgable sex education, then no, what Lambert did wouldn’t have caused an eye blink.

However, knowing it’s adding to the sex education of kids who are getting sex education through the media, then ya it should be concerning.  And the problem isn’t so much Lambert himself, it’s the bigger picture of what’s going on.

  • Amy

He without sin cast the first stone… You cannot equate the Adam Lambert and Chris Brown situations. Both were totally wrong. The AMA has to go back to setting a standard for their performers. They are aware who watches there telecast so they therefore should be more conscious of what there artist will do. I have read countless comments about the Chris Brown/Rhianna situation and many have demonized Chris. In no way do I condone what he has done, but I also believe that for everyone there is an opportunity for redemption. We thank God that the outcome was not death, but where is the help for this young man. I read the comment by Sherri Sheppard from the view and found it to be absurd. Whether Adam was an established artist or a newcomer we as a society should not want anyone period to perform in that manner. We must be careful how we label people and actually see where we are as a society that we accept what is put out as entertainment.

    • leftfield

Unfortunately, Rhianna couldn’t just change the channel.

  • Joe

With all the teeny boppers waiting for Taylor swift as artist of the year, to see Mr. Pornjob Adam Lambert was unacceptable. It’s also very sad that Mr. Lambert needs sex to sell his albums. I think we all know why…. his vocals suck! I hope this sends a clear message that this behavoir will not be tolerated. Mr. Lambert…. you need help dude.

  • Eep

I agree with Bjay – it’s not that Adam’s actions were less appropriate than Madonna’s or Janet Jackson’s (or Michael’s).  But we have come to accept them as part of pop culture.  My questions is why?  I don’t care what your sexual orientation or fetish is.  What goes on in your bedroom is your business – so please keep it there.  And I agree too with the comment about the way little girls are dressed & kids dance (little kids).  We don’t need to wonder why things are such a mess – we know – we let kids learn about sex & intimacy from a bunch of performers whose own lives are a mess because parents are too busy doing other things instead of raising their kids.  My parents were careful about what I watched & listened to until I was in Middle School – they figured I was at an age then when I could start to decide for myself what I wanted to “expose” myself to.  They were smart to do this.  It gave me a chance to be a kid and to earn their trust before I was just left to my own devises.  I am thankful they did that – I think it has made me a more confident & healthy person because I know where & why I have boundaries.  There is a reason I choose not to watch a lot of the shows that are on TV – as they say GIGO (garbage in, garbage out).  Let’s teach kids to respect themselves not objectify others or themselves!

  • D. Pfeiffer

I really liked Lambert on Idol & thought he should have won.  However, after seeing him on the America Music Awards, I am so happy he lost.  He also lost my support & respect.  I will never buy a record or see a show of his.  His type of act was more for Vegas than my living room & I don’t understand why the FCC has not fined ABC for allowing it to go on.  They apparently knew it was going to happened because they kept promoting his \shocking\ act before the show aired.

  • Neil

The apparent ‘incident’ has made the British press. We cannot, on legal sites, even view the performance due to copyright I guess…Simon Cowell owns a chunk of our broadcasting too!!  However, I must comment on the responses I have read here. While I cannot condone any acts/actions I have no been privvy to, is it not the right of all artists to express themselves? Was it less shocking for Madonna to kiss X-Tina and Britney…or was that purely because that was woman-on-woman? Is it true, especially in the USA, that girl-on-girl is more acceptable than guy-on-guy? I’m not saying there is no such thing as homophobia in the UK-far from it-but can it be said that sometimes prejudice gets in the way of self expression? Freddy Mercury, Elton John, Liberace, Noel Coward, Oscar Wilde, Ellen Degeneres, Jodie Foster et all (a random set of names) have not harmed the human race, they have enhanced. Simulated sexual acts on stage are average-Pussy Cat Dolls, Justin Timberlake, Britney…many times, Madonna…many many times, Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, any Jackson alive or dead…not every artist is subtle. It’s entertainment. If you don’t like it, turn off/over. Simple. Moments like this should never be, in 2009, prefaced with ‘openly gay’, or ‘gay finalist’.  It just makes the world seem too happy!!!!!!!

  • http://tucsoncitizen.com Andy Morales

I think George Harrison said it best when asked why the Beatles stopped doing concerts to focus on their record making – because it’s in the music.

These “entertainers” do not have the musical talent to pull off a song or a career.  They rely on theatrics because their music isn’t good…not good at all.

    Andy

    • Bjay

I agree, if many had to stand on their own without the hype, videos, artist image, they wouldn’t go anywhere.

  • erniemccray

And the war goes on in Afghanistan with “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the law of the land. We just, generally, can’t stand sex when it comes to man and man. That being said I don’t need fireworks or groping or kisses from entertainers regardless of whether they’re woman or man; I’m fine with a singer just standing up at the mike and singing into it to beat the band. And Adam Lambert, can he do that? I think he can.
But what about the war in Afghanistan? What about the violence? When will our society take such problems in hand and demand throughout this land that our children not be pawns for our inability to understand others and develop relationships that model for them how to establish cooperative and peaceful ways of existing on a most beautiful planet?
Just idealistic thoughts on a wonderful Thanksgiving Day whirling around in the mind of Ernie McCray. I’m going to listen to some Jimmy Smith and mellow out in a big way.

    • Kareen

Maybe he should apologize when all the females apologize for their slutty behavior.

    • Bjay

Hope u had a great Thanksgiving.  Thanks for the idealistic thoughts for the holidays.  :D

  • Tammy

I couldn’t agree with you more Bob and Leftfield.  Several people on here have just reinforced your thoughts.   We, as a country, need to stop being so prudish and close minded.  The fact that ABC replaced Adam with Chris Brown shows just how ridiculous the mindset is in this ountry.  How is it ok to beat down your girlfriend or for rap artists to degrade women yet a simulated sex act is treated like a felony?
Amy, a man who beats down a woman like he did  then shows no remorse must earn back trust and respect.  I have not seen him do a lot of that nor have I heard that people have “accepted” what he did.   You act as if his punishment was so severe.  He didn’t go to jail, he basically got a slap on the wrist and even whined about that!!  Never should we accept domestic violence, no matter who is dishing it out.
How can girl on girl be encouraged and passed over then when it comes to guy on guy everyone freaks out?  Women artists have also simulated sex acts on stage for decades yet don’t face the same ridicule.  This is a lot less about his performance than it is about the fact that he is an openly gay MAN.

  • Dee

Adam says that he was hyper as a child and, if you look close enough, he is still enough so that it might explain his getting carried away with his AMA performance since impulse control is a great part of hyperactivity.  He did well on several shows subseqent to AMA; however, on The Early Show, I noticed that he perhaps (again impulsively) dropped the mike unexpectedly and headed out for autographs.  This would explain his AMA performance, although it’s something he would hardly be able to admit less no one trust him to perform again.  Not making excuses for Adam, since his AMA performance was, to me, disgusting, and I’ve yet to buy his long-awaited CD after I was counting the days until it was released.  Just wondering if anyone else out there has put this aspect of Adam together and come up with the same answer.

  • Chance

I can’t believe Chris Brown was allowed to perform after Adam Lambert was dropped.  I also do believe in Adam Lambert the guy is too honest and I think is too naive.  He told us there were only two things they changed from rehearsal and his whole production was rehearsed for two weeks.  The first was the dancer was only suppose to look at him and second he was only suppose to hold the key boardist head and stare at him.  Both dancer and band member went with it after all it is clear Tommy kissed him back and the dancer was the one moving his head against Adam’s stomach.  But the main thing is folks…get over it.  Adam did nothing different than the whole night’s other performances.  He was fully dressed in a 3 piece suit.  The women were barely wearing clothes.  Folks complained because the PTC encouraged it.  Why didn’t parents turn the tv off when Janet Jackson started her routine?  Why did folks not complain about the rappers singing about raping women.  Double standards folks.  Attack and blame the gay guy for everything.

    • Unsure

Just a coment Chance, I lay no blame on a gay guy, but come on, it was alot over the top, and so was Madonna and Janet Jackson, and I did turn my TV to another station.  Attack and blame Lambert, not just because he’s the gay guy.

PS – I don’t like rap either, none of it.  Can’t understand most of what they say, and don’t care for what I do understand.

  • Stephanie

I liked adam’s performance even if some things were off about it. What I really hate is all u guys talking smack about him. So what if he made mistakes, you can’t expect everyone to be perfect.

    • Unsure

Do you have kids?  Would you want them to see that performance.  From the little I watched it wasn’t off, it was a disgrace to the AMA.  I could care less about seeing girls on girls or guys on guys.  I was brought up that relationships were between girl and boy.  I don’t care what gay people do, but to push that in your face, do it behind closed doors.  There are some of us who don’t want to see it.

  • Unsure

I am 44 and my 15 year old daughter had to tell me what MILF stood for.  As far as Lambert, it’s no surprise, look what is shown on TV these days.   I grew up with “The Waltons”, The Cosby Show, and Andy Griffith”.   There are no family shows on TV today.  All that went away many years ago.  Parents need to take control and stop being afraid to bust the butt, being afraid of DSS is like being afraid of the outfits made for our children today.  Try to find something decent for them to wear, it won’t be in any department store, or name brand, shorts that show butt cheeks, shirts cut so low they show kids breast.  We have to take control, not TV and certainly not Adam Lambert – get a little class, take a lesson from Ellen, at least she is classy in her show and in anything I’ve ever seen her in.  Parents have got to stand up and make a stand!  No more bull….  Lets bring back family TV shows that we can watch with our kids without trying to explain what something means that makes us blush.

    • Bjay

Sorry about making you blush.  The MILF term has become a part of the American vocabulary.  There’s even at least one sandwich in a Tucson bar/restaurant that bears that name (and it’s GOOD too – at Bumsted’s). I’ve seen it used on TV many times now.

I don’t think there are many family shows that teach values and character on broadcast TV anymore (I swear ma and pa Ingalls of Little House on the Prairie practically raised my sister and I)  but, there are some cute family shows on Disney and of course re-runs and series on DVD.

The kid clothes are crazy today.  I don’t have a little girl.  I have a boy and he’s easy to dress.  One of my close friends complains that she has to go buy her kid clothes in larger sizes so that everything is covered.  Or she buys larger shirts and then belts them like dresses and such. Yikes.

  • Kareen

    Same here Dee
I found the whole American music award sickening and that includes Adams performance. He did step over the line, but I also thought that at the beginning of the show when Janet Jackson performed.

Adam has this gorgeous voice and I have waited for his CD to come out, but so far, I haven’t rushed out to buy it.

    • Unsure

I agree with you Kareen and Dee, my money won’t be spent on Lambert’s CD.  I liked him on American Idol, but after the AMA’s,  that did it for me.

      • Idolfan

I find it sad that people can be so unforgiving then to not give someone a second chance. Adam has since performed  Whataya Want From Me twice (Early Show, and David Letterman) and both performances were awesome and you won’t  find a soul that found them not appropriate.

  • Sick

I don’t care is someone is gay or not, but keep it in the bedroom.  I believe alot of the what people do not like or do not understand about the lifestyle of gays is the behavior that is shown like this – and the parades etc. that most of the gay community don’t support.  This is what turns people off.

  • http://www.kaddystroller.com Dennis

    Lambert is a skank!

  • Danielle

Double-standards. None of you care about Brintey and Madonna, Janet Jackson… or even what Lady Gaga or Rihanna wears. Because it’s okay for women to show sexuality, right?  But when it comes to Adam Lambert, you’re going to sit here and run him into the ground? In my eyes, Adam did nothing wrong. It’s a performance. It’s meant to be for your entertainment. And apparently, none of you can handle that. Anyone who’s a true fan will say the same thing, because we’re the ones that are going to stand by his side no matter what. Adam should not appologize. He has done nothing wrong. If anything, it’s the people who can’t accept freedom of expression that should be appologizing.

  • tiponeill

The only “controversy” is because at the moment being anti-gay is political and all the bigots feel the need to complain and condemn to shore up their side of the political debate.
It is reminiscent of the rare times that one would see a black and white person kissing on television, and the “controversy”  from people who “weren’t bigots” but didn’t think such things should be on television and didn’t want their children exposed to that.
Personally I’m glad that Adam isn’t another Clay Aiken and if any apologizing needs to be done, it is ABC that should be doing it.

  • db

Do you critics have ANY  IDEA what constitutes Sex Education in Middle Schools in the U.S.?  What Adam simulated in a song isn’t half as what is discussed in schools, complete with vulgarisms.

Do you  critics have ANY IDEA WHY pregnancy rates are down? It ISN’T because teens aren’t doing ANYTHING, parents. It’s because they ARE knowledgeable about oral sex, among other deeds.

Maybe Adam dragged a few ostriches’ heads out of the sand.

    • Bjay

I agree db…I think a lot of people aren’t aware of what’s become part of the popular culture now.

Speaking of oral sex – many teens peform it a LOT but when asked if they’ve had sex, they say no and say they are virgins.  If they were hooked up to a lie detector, they’d pass because they really don’t believe it is sex.  To them it’s no big deal.  I’m not sure if that’s being taught to them or something kids have come up with as a collective.

So to a lot of young kids, the oral sex simulation Lambert did isn’t a big deal and has nothing to do with “sex.”

      • leftfield

“Speaking of oral sex – many teens peform it a LOT but when asked if they’ve had sex, they say no and say they are virgins.”

See, I knew I was born way too early.

  • Kareen

Danielle you are right about the Double Standard.
Long ago I stopped watching the crap some of the girls turn out.
Who knows what they are trying to prove, but I am not interested. I say, leave it in the bedroom  and that goes for Adam too.
We know he is gay, but please don’t rub it in our faces.
However have a soft spot for Adam. He is so talented and I love some of his music and I also think he is a real nice and very polite honest guy.
PLEASE ADAM, leave this crap out of your performances!!!!

    • Bjay

Would you feel better if he stopped doing that in all his performances?

Or would it be okay if he did it in certain venues with adults who were expecting or wanting to see something like that?

I’m asking that of everyone out of curiosity.

I expect that he will continue to put on the kind of show that audiences want and expect. There was nothing new or original in his act – as he points out Madonna has beeen doing it for a decade to sold out crowds.
The difference is only that he is gay, and although Bowie et. al. were doing the same thing 40 years ago, they were not shown on TV because of our culture’s homophobia, just as mixed race couples were not shown.
The “controversy” has nothing to do with anything except for the slowly crumbling homophobic values in the US – in many countries it wouldn’t even be noticed.

I remember this interview with Madonna from about 15 years ago.  This would not fly if Adam Lambert did it today.

On the other hand, Madonna never had the kind of fan base that Lambert began with – the American-Idol fans.

I seem to recall that that “fan base” dissed him and went for the straight guy. I doubt it would be a smart move to continue to try appealing to that demographic.

If your young kids were up at 11pm watching TV of any kind I have to question your parenting skills.  The awards shows are always over the top and I, a 63 yr old straight women, saw nothing wrong with his preformance.  I rather expected him to be a bit wild.  Did none of you follow his Zodiac shows?  I lived through the first glam rock years and he is not doing anything that has not been done before.  Only he is gay so everyone is having hissy fits.  If America is too prudish for him then Europe will welcome him with open arms.   Sex is not the enemy.   Censorship is…………

I always thought Sherri Shepherd was a little slow. Where the hell has she been, I would wagwer that more people know of Adam Lambert than know of her. Wake up Dopey!
