The Arizona Wildcats were resting after an impressive sweep of UCLA and USC when they got some unexpected help from Pullman, Washington. WSU beat Washington Sunday night to drop the Huskies into a 1st-place tie with Arizona.

Thanks, Wazzu!

As a result the Cats will be carrying an extra burden to the Bay Area. Sitting on top of the standings means additional pressure and a larger bull’s-eye.

Ain’t it fun?

Quick thoughts after the Arizona Wildcats outshoot UCLA

Friday, January 28th, 2011

It’s always nice when a win is easier than you expected.

The Arizona Wildcats hit 85 points for the first time since Nov. 21 against Northern Colorado. They shot the ball like you’re supposed to at home. They played like the second best team in the Pac-10.

High-fives all around.

The team unveiled new uniforms and they looked great. The extra color makes the home whites look livelier. From a distance the design on the back looks like a Transformers logo, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

The best part about the new uniforms? They’re undefeated.

The Arizona Wildcats football team lost a huge road game against Stanford and proceeded to fall apart.

The hoops squad could have done the same after a double-digit loss at first-place Washington.

I’m happy to report the UA’s wheels remain firmly intact.

Quick thoughts after Arizona Basketball falls to the Washington Huskies

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

The Cats needed a perfect game to win and this certainly wasn’t it.

40% shooting, 65% from the free throw line, getting out-rebounded by eight, and allowing 49 points in the second half. It definitely looked like an inexperienced team on the road against a veteran one.

It wasn’t the highest level of basketball (the Pac-10 is clearly down if these are the top two teams) but it was an intense contest. Washington took care of business and now the real work begins for Arizona.

It’s good to get bumped around and take some bruises (as well as give some back). But the key is using the bruises to get stronger. The schedule doesn’t ease up: at Washington State, then UCLA and USC at home. The Cats need two, and taking all three would be a big statement.

You can’t win three if you don’t win the first one. Wazzu coasted against ASU and will have plenty left in the tank on Saturday. If the UA can leave Seattle in the rearview mirror and play well against the Cougars it’ll be a sign this team is maturing.

The young Cats now know what a battle for first place feels like. It won’t be long before Sean Miller has them back in another one.
