This Week in the Pac-12, Jan. 12: Arizona and other hoops contenders return home

After two weeks of Pac-12 basketball it wasn’t a shock that only one team still had a perfect conference record. It was a surprise that the one team was Colorado.

But then you realize the Buffaloes are the only Pac-12 school that played the first two weekends at home.

That changes this week as Colorado hits the road while the other four teams in the top half of the league return home. Will there be a new conference leader when the final buzzer sounds Sunday night?

Record Heist: Lost Arizona Baseball strikeout mark turns up at Hi Corbett Field

The college baseball season is still more than a month away but the University of Arizona unveiled the rebranded Hi Corbett Field, both to the media and the fans.

The marketing push has given the UA baseball program a higher profile than in recent years and increased season ticket sales.

It also uncovered a forgotten record.

The Wildcats’ connection to Hi Corbett stretches back for decades and, on a Friday night in the spring of 1940, the old stadium witnessed one of the greatest pitching performances in school history.

This Week in the Pac-12, Jan. 5: Arizona Basketball looks for rare wins in Los Angeles

The Cal Bears, Stanford Cardinal and Washington Huskies posted 2-0 records last week as Pac-12 play got underway. All three will look to remain perfect as their paths do not yet cross.

The Arizona Wildcats posted a victory in their single conference game a week ago so they too will attempt to keep their Pac-12 record clean.

To do so the Cats will have to reverse their recent fortunes of the past few years in the City of Angels (or, in the case of tonight’s game, the University of California, Los Angeles of Anaheim).

The Arizona Wildcats beat Arizona State handily on Saturday giving Sean Miller his fourth win in five games against the Sun Devils.

Add in the UA football team winning three of the last four Territorial Cup games and Cat fans are swimming in bragging rights.

When was the last time the head-to-head in-state rivalry was this lopsided in the two highest profile sports?
