D Down: Uncovering Arizona Basketball’s biggest need for improvement

For the second time in three weeks the Arizona Wildcats basketball team suffered a loss to a good team on Thursday before recovering to handily beat an inferior opponent on Saturday.

The loss to UCLA was especially unsettling because it happened in Tucson and the Bruins had a big lead faster than you could look up the correct number of Z’s in Shabazz. Arizona’s poor performance left fans wondering if the team was progressing as it should with more than half the season in the rearview mirror.

Are the Cats getting better? And what needs to change for the UA to get wins against the big boys again?

This Week in the Pac-12, Jan. 23: Arizona clashes with UCLA as everyone chases Oregon

UCLA at Arizona is the game of the week in Pac-12 basketball and has long been anticipated as one of the games of the year. It was supposed to be a clash of two revitalized western titans with conference supremacy at stake.

Now it might only determine who gets to finish second to the Oregon Ducks.

Beatings Reborn: Arizona Basketball looks ready to regain control of rivalry with ASU

Arizona defeated Arizona State on Saturday afternoon in a very satisfying victory for Wildcat fans. It wasn’t just winning in Tempe. It wasn’t merely the 17-point margin of victory. It was beating ASU in a fashion that left no doubt as to who had the better team.

It was a sign that a return to the days of a one-sided hoops rivalry may be on the horizon.

Separation Saturday is coming in the Pac-12.

There are five contenders left for the conference’s regular season basketball title. Four of them are paired in two big games this weekend that could shape the race.

Two of the schools involved also happen to be bitter rivals.
