You need to think the little things through a little better (or risk having no credibility on the bigger things). A team can never play a 5 seed two days before playing a 1 seed. Given the fundamental structure of the tournament, a 5 (or a team that beats a 5) will always play a 1 in a Thurs/Fri game.

That’s a great way to put it: “nervously having a great time this year.” The team is so thin it could fall apart at any time but the guys are all buying in and they have a chance to make a solid run so we may as well enjoy the ride.

– One of the best posts I have read in a long time…. i could not agree more with this statement above. College ball will, forever, be more interesting to me than the pros because, for the most part, money is a non-factor and you are stripped down to the passion and development of each player. This season has been stressful to watch, but I have found that I am more attached to this team than any other cat team I have watched since the late 80′s. If they actually do coalesce, and dominate the second half stretch and make the tourney — how sweet it will be to witness the whole process!

This possibility has always been there. Perhaps in previous years – when this years players had other talents to defer to (like Williams and Jones) – they didnt strive to be ‘the guy’ and instead accepted roles.

This year – there is no one to defer to and to my great pleasure they are recognizing that they are ‘the guys’. How about the numbers for Hill, Fogg, Perry and Lavender? And all from effort as they transition from roles to being ‘the guys’. Its nice to see.

The freshmen are a work in progress – and doing well. I can see all three becoming nascent goto guys by the end of the year.

I watch college ball over pro specifically to watch development of programs to players. I am nervously having a great time this year.

Unless the NCAA makes much needed adjustments in rules, dominant teams in the future will be those with players that are 3 stars not 5. That is, players that will play for most of their eligibility – like Washington.

UofA will be a much different team next year – but without rule changes – it is likely to be the same the year after. I hope that isnt true – but fear it may be.

Excellent article.

You missed one point – leadership. They lost Jones, who was the on court leader. With a leader on court, I dont think they would have gotten off to so many slow starts – and their record might be better.

I am proud of them – and Miller. They are in a tough spot through no fault of their own. Being competative is better than we might have gotten without Miller.

One comment. Johnson – in highschool – was a killer with a killer’s attitude. He would dunk over 5′s and then get in their face and business. Remember Jones? Same thing. Early in this season he dunked over an opponents post and almost —- almost —- got in his business, but backed off. I dont think he can reach his full potential editing himself like that. I think he needs to play with fire – instead – he is playing ‘responsibly’. I think he is out of his zone. He needs to get mean. Just my opinion.

Great article! I can’t believe how many fans are so upset with this team. We should have seen this coming from the beginning of the season — it’s a transitional team that WILL continue to struggle. If we make the tourney — great! But if we don’t, we have to stay focused and believe in our team and coach for the long haul. There will be many more exciting times ahead for this team, and certainly, with the future teams and the recruits that we are bringing in…
