I messed up.

We talked about how one Arizona win against Stanford would keep the Wildcats on pace to host a regional. We said winning twice would allow the UA to dream of a conference championship.

I didn’t even consider the possibility of winning all three.

It has been 20 years since the Arizona Wildcats baseball team hosted an NCAA tournament regional. That’s also the last time the UA won a conference championship.

When the Cats run out onto Hi Corbett Field this weekend to take on the Stanford Cardinal, the home team will have the opportunity to make that first goal seem incomplete without the second one.

Remember those lowered expectations for Arizona Basketball in 2012? Do you recall coming to terms with the close-but-no-cigar finishes?

Toss it all out with the congealed nacho dip from your Super Bowl party. The Wildcats have brought back optimism in a big way.

The second half of the initial Pac-12 conference season is about to get underway.

Because of the extra teams (without extra games) you don’t play all the same teams you played in the first half of the year. As we saw in football, the schedule can play a significant role in who makes a run at the championship.

Which school has the advantage among the contenders over the final nine games? And can the Arizona Wildcats fare better against this Pac-12 co-leader than they did against the other one?

This Week in the Pac-12, Jan. 5: Arizona Basketball looks for rare wins in Los Angeles

The Cal Bears, Stanford Cardinal and Washington Huskies posted 2-0 records last week as Pac-12 play got underway. All three will look to remain perfect as their paths do not yet cross.

The Arizona Wildcats posted a victory in their single conference game a week ago so they too will attempt to keep their Pac-12 record clean.

To do so the Cats will have to reverse their recent fortunes of the past few years in the City of Angels (or, in the case of tonight’s game, the University of California, Los Angeles of Anaheim).
