Add Princess Cruises to the list of lines sending a hot new ship to New York City.

The California-based company this week announced that its soon-to-debut Royal Princess would cruise out of the Big Apple in the fall of 2014.

The 3,560-passenger vessel — the line’s biggest ever — will sail four seven-night voyages out of New York to Canada and New England in September and October 2014. The itinerary will include stops in Boston; Bar Harbor, Maine; Newport, R.I.; and the Atlantic Canadian ports of Halifax and Saint John.

Princess’ announcement comes just a month after rival Royal Caribbean revealed plans to deploy its much-awaited new Quantum of the Seas to the New York area. The 4,180-passenger vessel will operate seven- to 12-night trips out of Bayonne, N.J. after its debut in 2014.

Also sailing out of New York is Norwegian Cruise Line’s new, 4,028-passenger Norwegian Breakaway, which was christened in the city on May 8. The ship is being heralded as Norwegian’s best ever and features a number of new-for-the-line amenities, as can be seen in our new deck-by-deck photo tour.

Scheduled to debut in June, the Royal Princess will be the first new Princess ship in nearly five years and the first of a new series at the line. The vessel will boast several notable new features and amenities including a glass-bottomed SeaWalk over the ocean and an outdoor water and light show.

Video footage from the Carnival cruise ship where a young couple went missing this week appears to show the woman jumping from the vessel and her panic-stricken boyfriend following moments later, Australia’s Herald Sun is reporting.

The news outlet, citing local police, says an enhancement of security video from the Australia-based Carnival Spirit appears to show Paul Rossington, 30, jumping after his girlfriend, Kristen Schroder, 27, about 20 seconds after she plunged from the ship.

The couple went overboard late Wednesday as the Carnival Spirit was sailing off the coast of Australia, but no one realized they were missing until Thursday morning when the vessel docked in Sydney, Australia.

A massive air and sea search of the waters off the Australia coast begun on Thursday was called off today, and the couple is presumed dead.

The Herald Sun says detectives have spent the last day enhancing and analyzing surveillance footage from the ship to figure out what happened to the couple, who were traveling with friends and family.

In a statement sent to USA TODAY on Thursday, Carnival was vague about what the security camera footage showed but ruled out anything criminal.

“There is indication from the shipboard video of what transpired,” the statement says. “There is no evidence of foul play. However, out of respect for the families, we are not going to publicly disclose the details of what occurred at this time.”

Carnival’s top executive in Australia, Ann Sherry, today defended the Carnival Spirit crew’s handling of the situation, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. While the couple’s fall from the ship was caught on tape Wednesday by one of the vessel’s 600 surveillance cameras, Sherry noted that not all the cameras are monitored around-the-clock.

“We’ve invested hugely (in cameras), we can see exactly what’s going in most parts of the ship at most times,” she said, according to the Morning Herald. “There is also a balance, of course, around privacy. We don’t watch what people are doing in their private spaces, but we are keen to know exactly what’s happening around the sides of the ship.”

The incident is just the latest to put Carnival in the spotlight. It comes three months after a power loss on another Carnival ship, the Carnival Triumph, left passengers stranded at sea for days in miserable conditions. The much-publicized event followed an engine room fire on the ship.

Carnival also has experienced power problems in recent months with several other ships, including the Carnival Legend and Carnival Dream, and the line this week has faced complaints about unfinished areas from passengers on the first voyage of the newly revamped Carnival Sunshine.

The 2,124-passenger Carnival Spirit is based in Australia year-round. One of 24 ships at the line, it sails eight- to 12-night voyages to the South Pacific out of Sydney and Melbourne, Australia that are aimed primarily at Australians.

Cruise giant Carnival is grappling with yet another crisis today as authorities search for a young couple that has gone missing from one of its ship.

Australians Kristen Schroder, 27, and Paul Rossington, 30, were last seen on the Carnival Spirit on Wednesday as it was sailing off the coast of Australia, and security video appears to show them going overboard around 8:50 pm, according to a statement from the local New South Wales Police Force.

An Australian news outlet, The Australian, quotes a local police official as saying it’s too early to say whether the couple fell or jumped off the vessel, but police aren’t ruling out the possibility that they jumped in an attempt to take their own lives in a suicide pact.

In a statement sent to USA TODAY, Carnival is vague about what its security camera footage shows but ruled out anything criminal.

“There is indication from the shipboard video of what transpired,” the statement says. “There is no evidence of foul play. However, out of respect for the families, we are not going to publicly disclose the details of what occurred at this time.”

Carnival says the couple was discovered missing early today after the ship docked in Sydney at the end of a 10-night sailing. A search of the vessel was begun immediately, the line says.

“We have naturally been concerned since we became aware that two passengers were missing from Carnival Spirit, and our thoughts are clearly with their families at this difficult time,” the Carnival statement says. “We are working closely with New South Wales Police and assisting them in their inquiries.”

Carnival says the couple was traveling with family and friends.

A statement from the New South Wales Police Force says an air and marine search and rescue operation is underway off the coast of Australia to find the couple. The search is focusing on an area of the sea about 60 nautical miles east of Forster, Australia.

The incident comes three months after a power loss on another Carnival ship, the Carnival Triumph, left passengers stranded at sea for days in miserable conditions.

One of the biggest cruise ships ever built today received a New York-style kickoff, literally, at an entertainment-studded christening ceremony in the city.

New York’s high-kicking Rockettes served as godmothers for the 4,028-passenger Norwegian Breakaway — the latest from Norwegian Cruise Line — at the hour-and-a-half-long event. It took place as the vessel was docked at the city’s Pier 88.

“We bless this ship and all who sail on her,” a dozen members of the Rockettes said in unison from a stage before cutting a yellow ribbon to trigger the smashing of a bottle against the vessel’s hull.

Billed as the largest cruise ship ever based year-round in New York, the 146,600-ton Breakaway features a distinct New York flavor that includes Broadway shows such as the ’80s rock musical Rock of Ages, restaurants by New York chef Geoffrey Zakarian and an outdoor hot dog stand by New York’s Sabrett. New York artist Peter Max designed a giant, New York-themed mural for its hull.

Breakaway will sail from the city to such destinations as Bermuda and the Bahamas starting Sunday.

“It’s such an honor to bring this ship here to my home town,” Norwegian CEO Kevin Sheehan told several thousand attendees at the event. The native New Yorker once drove a cab in the city. “I know you know New Yorkers are tough, but they know what they want, and they respect quality … and that’s what we have done.”

Celebrity baker Buddy Valastro, the star of TLC’s Cake Boss, served as master of ceremonies at the christening, which included a speech by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and an invocation by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York. The ship is the first to have a branch of Valastro’s Hoboken, N.J.-based Carlo’s Bakery.

The ship’s cast of Rock of Ages also performed at the event, as did The Rockettes. Attendees also got a taste of Burn the Floor, another Broadway show on Breakaway, as well as other shipboard entertainment.

“What a way to travel,” Bloomberg said of the 18-deck-high vessel. He then praised Norwegian for bringing the ship to New York, noting that it will further boost the city’s booming cruise business. Roughly 587,000 people sailed out of New York in 2012.

While not quite as large as Royal Caribbean’s groundbreaking Oasis Class ships, Breakaway is among the 10 largest cruise vessels ever built. As can be seen in USA TODAY’s new deck-by-deck photo tour, it has all the trappings of a major mega-resort, including a wide variety of restaurants and nightspots. The ship’s deck-top amusements include a watery fun zone with five water slides.

Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie and Bermuda Premier Craig Cannonier both spoke at the christening.

“One word comes to mind … wow!” said Cannonier. “This is just unbelievable that you can build something like this on the water.”

Breakaway was named by a USA TODAY reader in a contest held here at USA TODAY’s online cruise site, the Cruise Log, and we got an early look at the ship last week before its U.S. debut.

One of the biggest cruise ships ever built today will get a New York-style kickoff, literally, in a christening ceremony in the city.

Radio City Music Hall’s high-kicking Rockettes will serve as godmothers for the 4,028-passenger Norwegian Breakaway at an afternoon coming-out party that also will include an appearance by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Built at Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard, Breakaway arrived in New York earlier this week after a trans-Atlantic crossing from Europe. At 146,600 tons, it’s becoming the largest cruise ship ever based year-round in the Big Apple, and it features a number of New York influences, including Broadway shows such as Rock of Ages and a restaurant by New York chef Geoffrey Zakarian. New York artist Peter Max designed a giant, New York-themed mural for its hull.

While not quite as large as Royal Caribbean’s groundbreaking Oasis Class ships, Breakaway is among the 10 largest cruise vessels ever built. As can be seen in our new deck-by-deck photo tour, it has all the trappings of a major mega-resort, including a wide variety of restaurants and nightspots. The ship’s deck-top amusements include a watery fun zone with five water slides.

Breakaway will sail weekly from New York to such destinations as Bermuda and the Bahamas starting on Sunday.

Regular readers will recall that Breakaway was named by a USA TODAY reader in a contest held here at USA TODAY’s online cruise site, the Cruise Log, and we got an early look at the ship last week before its U.S. debut.

Industry giant Carnival is facing more complaints today in the wake of a marred relaunch of one of its older ships.

The 3,006-passenger Carnival Sunshine, which set sail today for the first time since a two-and-a-half month, $155 million overhaul in dry dock, is experiencing problems with some cabins as well as the closure of elements of its top decks because of unfinished work, according to passengers on the vessel.

A spokeswoman for Carnival tells USA TODAY the ship’s new WaterWorks water park and SportsSquare recreational area are “still undergoing final finishing work,” and the ship’s main Lido pool is closed due to “technical issues.”

Still, Carnival’s Jennifer de la Cruz says problems with the 17-year-old vessel are isolated. “The (adults-only) Serenity pool, waterfall and adjacent whirlpools are open,” she says, and “all dining venues, bars, lounges, entertainment, spa, youth areas, casino and other public areas of the vessel are operating normally.”

De la Cruz calls problems with cabins on the ship minor in the wake of the overhaul and typical of those found on new and refurbished ships.

“As is sometimes the case with both new ships and major refurbishments, some minor issues are being reported with guest staterooms and those are being addressed on an individual basis,” de la Cruz says.

The overhaul of the Carnival Sunshine, formerly known as the Carnival Destiny, was one of the biggest ever for an older cruise ship and included the addition of a partial deck and the expansion of two other decks. The makeover brought the ship 182 new cabins as well as new eateries, lounges and deck-top amusements.

The Carnival Sunshine is a sister vessel to the Carnival Triumph, which was left adrift in the Gulf in Mexico in February following an engine room fire. The overhaul of the Carnival Sunshine was extended by several weeks after the incident so the company could make changes to its engine rooms and fire suppression systems.

Carnival Sunshine is on a 12-day Mediterranean cruise out of Venice, Italy, that concludes in Barcelona on May 17.

ABOARD THE AVALON EXPRESSION — It’s no secret that river cruising is one of the fastest growing areas of travel these days, and the boom is showing no signs of slowing, says the head of one of the largest river lines catering to North Americans.

“Unless we screw it up, the (growth in) demand will continue for years,” Avalon Waterways managing director Patrick Clark tells USA TODAY in an interview aboard the line’s newest ship, the Avalon Expression.

Echoing recent comments by the head of rival Viking River Cruises, Clark notes the river cruise industry only has captured a tiny portion of the pool of people who can afford and would enjoy the experience, and there is plenty of room for more ships such as the 166-passenger Expression, which will be christened today in Koblenz, Germany. The ship is scheduled to spend the summer sailing on Europe’s Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.

“The entire river cruise market to Europe is 500,000 people (a year) as opposed to 15 million taking ocean cruises, and there is a high level of interest from that 15 million in river cruises,” Clark says.

Clark says there are more than 100 million people in all in English-speaking markets such as the USA, Canada and Australia that fit what he says is the key demographic for river cruisers: Baby Boomers between the ages of about 55 and 70.

Four out of five Avalon customers are past ocean cruisers who have shifted to river cruising in part because of the intimacy it offers, Clark says. The typical river ship in Europe carries 150 to 190 people, far fewer than the typical ocean ship sailing around Europe with 3,000 passengers on more.

Ocean cruisers also are discovering that river cruising allow them to get more up close and personal to destinations, Clark says. Because they’re small, river ships usually dock right in the center of even the smallest towns, and passengers easily can walk to top attractions or tag along on guided tours that are included in the price of a sailing.

“If you go into a port (on a big ocean ship), you can’t do that,” Clark notes. “First it’s got to be a big enough port to accommodate the ship, and then you queue up and you have to go on coaches and sign up for (extra-charge) excursions. It’s a totally different experience.”

River cruises, Clark says, appeal to travelers who “want to go through a country as opposed to around the edge of it.

The three-deck-high Avalon Expression is Avalon’s fifth new ship in Europe in three years, and the line has three more vessels on order for the region for 2014.

It’s a rapid expansion, though one not nearly as ambitious as what is going on at Viking River Cruises, which is in the midst of rolling out more than 20 new ships in Europe over a three-year period — 10 this year alone.

Like two other major river lines catering to North Americans, AmaWaterways and Uniworld, Clark says Avalon is taking a more measured approached to growth, despite the potential.

“I don’t think anybody will follow him,” Clark says of Viking chairman Tor Hagen’s massive expansion, which began last year and is the talk of the industry. “We have no intention of getting into the arms race.”

Clark says there are a lot of risks in expanding fast.

“I think he’s going to be challenged,” Clark says of Hagen. “You throw 10 ships in, you’ve got a lot of crew to start recruit. You’ve got to start getting captains. You’ve got to start getting training. You’ve got consistency on board. There are a lot of challenges when you grow fast.”

In short, the quality of the product could suffer, Clark says.

While it may not be growing as fast as Viking, Avalon continues to differentiate itself from the line and others with its new Panorama class of ships, which feature a large number of extra-wide cabins called Panorama Suites.

The latest in the class, the Avalon Expression has 64 of the suites, which offer 200 square feet of living space. That’s about 30% more than the standard river ship cabin.

The Panorama Suites make up nearly 80% of the cabins on board the Avalon Expression — an unusually high percentage of large cabins for a river ship — and have several unusual features. Among them: Floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall panoramic windows that stretch 11 feet wide and open up seven-feet wide — a first for a river ship.

Thanks to a larger-than-normal width, the Panorama Suites also have beds facing the windows. In most river ship cabins, due to limited space, beds are placed sideways facing a wall.

The larger cabins are made possible in part by Avalon’s decision to forgo cabin balconies — a feature that river line executives say customers claim to want but seldom use.

Creating balconies with seating areas on Europe-based river ships is difficult, given the narrowness of vessels that is dictated by the region’s river locks. As with other river ships designed to fit through the region’s locks, the width of the Avalon Expression is limited to just 38 feet, and adding a balcony to cabins would have meant shrinking the size of interior space.

In lieu of balconies attached to its Panorama Suites, Avalon instead added a cozy seating area within the cabins adjacent to the floor-to-ceiling windows. When the railing-lined windows are opened wide, passengers in the seating area feel like they are on a balcony.

“We looked very closely at the balcony and decided, after a lot of debate, that it wasn’t the best use of space,” Clark says.

ABOARD THE NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY — Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro can now lay claim to bakeries on both land and sea.

An extension of the celebrity baker’s Carlo’s Bake Shop in Hoboken, N.J. made its debut over the weekend here on Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Norwegian Breakaway, which is sailing with passengers for the first time.

Tucked into a corner of one of Breakaway’s restaurant-lined middle decks, Carlo’s today was serving Valastro’s signature cream-filled lobster tail pastries and ricotta-filled cannoli as well elaborate fondant cakes, cupcakes, biscotti and more.

Valastro’s father-in-law, Mauro Belgiovine, was on hand putting the finishing touches on pastries and making sure everything was perfect. Valastro will be coming on board next week when the ship reaches New York.

“It is the same as we make over there (in the USA), just as good,” Belgiovine tells USA TODAY.

Belgiovine says he’s training the new shop’s staff to bake the Carlo’s way, and he’s getting a kick out of all the passengers coming in for a look-see.

“People love it,” Belgiovine says. “They stop by and want to take pictures. They recognize the name as soon as they see it.”

Prices at the on-board Carlo’s range from $3 for a cannoli to $49.99 for a cake.

Norwegian took delivery of Breakaway late last week from Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard, and the 4,028-passenger vessel is visiting Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Southampton, England this week before heading to its new home in New York. It officially will be named in the city on May 8.

Under construction since early 2011, Breakaway was named by a USA TODAY reader later that year in a contest held here at USA TODAY’s sub-site devoted to cruising, the Cruise Log.
ABOARD THE NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY — Call it a coming out party for the new Norwegian Cruise Line.

The 4,028-passenger Norwegian Breakaway, to be christened May 8 in New York, isn’t just the biggest new cruise ship of the year. It’s also a symbol of how much has changed in recent years at the 12-vessel company, Norwegian CEO Kevin Sheehan tells USA TODAY.

“It’s a confirmation, an affirmation, of all the hard work,” says Sheehan, who describes an operation “in chaos” five years ago when he took over. “This is the first ship that’s been designed by the team that’s in place today.”

Hired in 2008 after private equity firm Apollo Management acquired a sizable stake in Norwegian, Sheehan quickly began a top-to-bottom overhaul that included replacing nearly all of the company’s top executives, downsizing a failing Hawaii cruise operation, eliminating old vessels and reworking itineraries.

At the same time, Sheehan set the company on a path to growth that centered around a new class of ships that debuts with Breakaway. Including Breakaway, the line will be rolling out three new vessels between now and 2015, with the company likely to exercise an option for a fourth by July.

In a one-on-one interview this weekend aboard the Breakaway’s first sailing with passengers, Sheehan tells USA TODAY the new ships are the result of a team effort that was rare at the company before he arrived. Ship design under previous management “was kind of like a little secret thing” done by the CEO without much consultation, and that led to problems, he says.

Sheehan already was CEO in 2010 when the line took delivery of the 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic, a ship that was designed before his arrival that was widely criticized for obvious design mistakes such as poor lighting above cabin bathroom mirrors and stylish but non-functional sink faucets.

Sheehan says it took 15 months to fix the problems with Epic, which he now calls “a great ship.”

Breakaway, by contrast, was done right the first time, thanks to input from around the company, he says.

“We’re a team of 20,000 hard-working people, and when we all work together we’re going to do much better things that if we work as individuals,” he says.

Sheehan says the Norwegian Breakaway also is a symbol of the line’s shift from competing on price with low-cost provider Carnival to being a brand designed to go head-to-head with Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and other lines that industry executives often refer to as “premium.”

When he first arrived, Sheehan says he told executives that “when we get through this, our brand will be the top brand in the premium category, and I know a lot of people thought I was crazy. Maybe some of them still do, but when you look at this brand Norwegian Cruise Line (today) and you compare it to Holland America or Princess or Celebrity, it really stands up well.”

Sheehan says he set a goal of turning Norwegian into the “hot brand” of the cruise industry, and it’s a goal he says the company has achieved.

Indeed, stylish and lively, the Norwegian Breakaway has all the trappings of a hip resort in Las Vegas, including nightclubs, shows and more than a dozen restaurants. Among its innovations is an outdoor “waterfront” along the ship’s eighth deck where half a dozen restaurant and bars have outdoor seating, and there’s an “aqua park” on the top deck that boasts five major water slides. The ship’s private Haven area of suites has its own pool area and restaurant in addition to personal concierge and butler service.

With three more ships expected between now and 2017, Norwegian also is on track to have the youngest fleet in the industry, Sheehan notes. The line’s total capacity is growing by well over 50% in a four-year span. The company also recently went public with a well-received initial public offering on Wall Street.

For Sheehan, it all adds up to smooth sailing ahead for a line that has long been an underdog of the industry.

“From what I see, and the metrics I look at every day, we’re very confident in our future,” he says.
