Lady Gaga says she supports an Olympic boycott by athletes because of Russia’s attitude towards gays.
“I don’t think that we should be going to the Olympics at all,” she told Britain’s talk-show host Alan Carr, according to The Independent. She appeared on his talk show “Chatty Man” on Friday.
“I mean, I would never take anything away from (the athlete’s) hard work, I just think it is absolutely wrong for so many countries to send money and economy in the way of a country that doesn’t support gays,” Lady Gaga said.
She also praised Olympic diver Tom Daley, who said this week in a YouTube video he is in a relationship with a man.
Russia has been heavily criticized by gay rights advocacy groups for its passage of legislation that bans promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations” to minors. The International Olympic Committee has received assurances from Russian government officials who say athletes and visitors at the Olympics will not face discrimination during the Games in February.
