Miami (Fla.) guard Shane Larkin was scheduled to reveal whether he would enter the draft or stay in school at a news conference Sunday.

Those plans probably need to be changed after his dad, Hall of Fame baseball player Barry Larkin, revealed his son is likely headed to the NBA and will bypass his final two seasons of eligibility.

The news was reported by ESPN.

Barry Larkin clarified the situation when speaking to The Miami Herald.

“All indications are that Shane is going to turn pro,” Barry Larkin told the newspaper. “He hasn’t given me the 100%, and nothing is final until he signs the NBA papers, but at this point, strong indications are he will turn pro.”

He added that it was difficult for his son to leave MIami.

“It’s a very tough decision for a young man to make. What’s pulling at Shane’s heart is his love for the University of Miami and the city of Miami. He feels very comfortable there. He loves Miami. He already told us he is not moving back to Orlando, that Miami’s his city. He loves the college atmosphere, feels very loyal to the coaches there, and this has been a tough decision.”

Larkin is projected as a possible first-round pick after averaging 14.5 points and 4.6 assists as a sophomore. He helped the Hurricanes to Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season and tournament championships.

It was the first time in school history they had claimed either crown. Miami advanced to the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 before losing to Marquette.

Larkin’s departure would mean a full-scale rebuild for Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga, who also will lose guards Durand Scott and Trey McKinney Jones and forward Kenny Kadji.

Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas will bypass his final season of eligibility and enter the NBA draft, the school announced Friday.

In his three seasons, Thomas scored 1,630 points to rank ninth on the school’s all-time list. He was part of one Final Four team in 2012.

“My three years at Ohio State have been the best years of my life,” Thomas said in a statement. “I have grown tremendously as an individual and as a basketball player. I intend to return to finish my degree, but I believe that now is the best opportunity to pursue my dream and begin my career as a professional basketball player.”

Thomas averaged a team-high 19.8 points and 5.9 rebounds as the Buckeyes won the Big Ten tournament and reached the Elite Eight this season.

“To see Deshaun grow into the man he has become has been amazing,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said in a statement. “His accomplishments on the floor speak for themselves but I am just as proud of him and what he has done off the floor. We recruited him offering the opportunity to grow as a person and player and that is exactly what happened. I know there is much more in-store for him in the future and I am proud to have been able to coach him.”

Even with the loss of Thomas, the Buckeyes appear in good shape for another strong season in 2014. Their other four starters are expected to return, including guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr.
