The Philadelphia Eagles have added more fuel to Chip Kelly’s high-octane offense.

Running back Felix Jones joined the team Tuesday on a one-year deal and will compete with Bryce Brown and Chris Polk for touches behind starter LeSean McCoy.

Jones switches NFC East addresses after spending his first five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. The former first-round pick displayed breakaway speed out of the backfield and as a kick returner early in his career, but nagging injuries prevented him from taking hold of a starting job.

Jones has 3,794 yards from scrimmage but has rushed for more than 700 yards only once in his career. However, his ability to run, catch (128 career receptions) and make defenders miss in the open field could earn him a role in an offense that could reel off up to 75 plays a game.

Source: USA TODAY

It takes about three seasons to accurately evaluate an NFL draft. It doesn't take 24 hours to unfairly grade it. So based on first impressions, USA TODAY Sports hands out report cards (written in pencil) for the just-completed 2013 draft:

St. Louis Rams: They might have hit on all seven players. West Virginia WRs Tavon Austin (No. 8) and Stedman Bailey (Round 3) give QB Sam Bradford needed options; LB Alec Ogletree (No. 30) is a steal if his head is on straight ... and Jeff Fisher is happy to help him; S T.J. McDonald (Round 3) is filling for another cavity; OL Barrett Jones (Round 4) plays anywhere, assuming he's healthy, and might take a guard spot in 2013; CB Brandon McGee (Round 5) looks like a dime back and special teams contributor out of the chute; and all-SEC RB Zac Stacy (Round 5) caps the haul. GM Les Snead opted against taking Robert Griffin III in 2012 but is doing his best to make that look like a smart move given the bounty he got in return. GRADE: A

Baltimore Ravens: It's difficult not to respect any draft run by GM Ozzie Newsome. He said in February that improving the guts of the defense was Priority No. 1, and he might have found three new starters in the first three rounds who should do exactly that: S Matt Elam, ILB Arthur Brown and DT Brandon Williams. Brown, in particular, backfills the ability and leadership departments after Ray Lewis' retirement, though any comparisons obviously are unfair. DE Kapron Lewis-Moore could surprise if healthy, and ex-Wisconsin T Ricky Wagner might get a look on an O-line also in transition. GRADE: A

Tennessee Titans: If the Mike Munchak era is to extend beyond this season, it's time to win now. No better way to do that than by importing quality rookies, four seemingly capable of making their marks instantly. G Chance Warmack (No. 10) and C Brian Schwenke (Round 4) complete an offensive line makeover that should benefit QB Jake Locker and RB Chris Johnson. WR Justin Hunter (Round 2) is a deep threat who might supplant Nate Washington, while CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson (Round 3) is a big corner who could take the nickel role and allow Alterraun Verner to shift into the slot. GRADE: A

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: If they'd traded their entire draft for CB Darrelle Revis, who is only 27 and still has quite a few years to re-stake his claim as the NFL's best defensive player, GM Mark Dominik and Co. would probably look pretty smart. They look even better by getting another good cover guy (Johnthan Banks, Round 2) and young arm (Mike Glennon, Round 3) who might give the team negotiating leverage when QB Josh Freeman's deal runs out in 2014. GRADE: A

Cincinnati Bengals: They've quietly become a strong-drafting club, and it appears they nailed it for a fifth consecutive year. TE Tyler Eifert and RB Gio Bernard represent needed options for QB Andy Dalton when WR A.J. Green is double covered — which is usually. DE Margus Hunt ought to be a force on passing downs and special teams. Third-round SS Shawn Williams could crack the starting lineup. (For what it's worth, finally getting RT Andre Smith re-signed was an excellent sidebar from draft weekend.) GRADE: A

Kansas City Chiefs: Hard to argue with T Eric Fisher at the top, nor the trade of their second-round pick for QB Alex Smith. Fourth-round RB Knile Davis could more effectively assume the battering ram role behind Jamaal Charles after vets Thomas Jones and Peyton Hillis struggled in recent seasons. Former Alabama LB Nico Johnson (Round 4) might start, and Round 7 pass rusher Mike Catapano of Princeton is a developmental prospect to monitor. GRADE: A-

San Diego Chargers: It's not hard to argue they got first-round value on their first three selections, only one of whom actually cost them a Round 1 choice (T D.J. Fluker, No. 11). ILB Manti Te'o (Round 2) and WR Keenan Allen (Round 3) fell for various reasons, but new GM Tom Telesco was there to catch them and just might be rewarded with Pro Bowl dividends. One bit of advice: Go back to the free agent market, which still has quality blockers QB Philip Rivers really needs. GRADE: A-

Pittsburgh Steelers: Round 1 OLB Jarvis Jones? Bargain, should start. Round 2 RB Le'Veon Bell? Bargain, should start. Punishing Round 4 S Shamarko Thomas? Bargain and overdue investment. Round 4 QB Landry Jones? Intriguing. The rest is gravy. GRADE: A-

Houston Texans: WR DeAndre Hopkins could finally be the guy to complement and, perhaps one day, replace Andre Johnson. Hard-hitting S D.J. Swearinger probably won't start right away, but it may be tough not to find a role for him. DE Sam Montgomery's talent exceeds third-round value if coordinator Wade Phillips can light a fire under him. OL Brennan Williams and David Quessenberry could vie for roles on the right side. GRADE: A-

Green Bay Packers: Looks like GM Ted Thompson's usual haul of potential starters, including DE Datone Jones and quality depth (OL David Bakhtiari). And don't be shocked if fourth-round RB Johnathan Franklin pushes second-rounder Eddie Lacy (but nice value at No. 61) for playing time. GRADE: A-

Carolina Panthers: They only had five picks, but new GM Dave Gettleman appeared to get impact players. DTs Star Lotulelei (Round 1) and Kawann Short (Round 2 with Round 1 talent) could form one of the league's scariest lines in between DEs Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy. Sixth-round RB Kenjon Barner could be a slippery change-of-pace option who could potentially allow Gettleman to trade Jonathan Stewart or DeAngelo Williams down the line. GRADE: B+

Chicago Bears: Not everyone viewed G Kyle Long as a first rounder, but the Bears did and think he might even be able to eventually nail down one of the tackle posts. Regardless, GM Phil Emery improved the protection in front of QB Jay Cutler and replenished the depleted linebacking corps with promising Jon Bostic and Khaseem Greene, who should be starting no later than 2014. Sixth-round DE Cornelius Washington is an exciting project. GRADE: B+

New Orleans Saints: A pretty nice job for a team that lost its second rounder in the aftermath of Bountygate. S Kenny Vaccaro (Round 1) is the playmaker the defense has lacked; OL Terron Armstead (Round 3) is a gifted athlete, and the Saints have a penchant for finding O-line gems; John Jenkins (Round 3) is the nose tackle the new 3-4 defense was lacking; and WR Kenny Stills (Round 5) could replace Devery Henderson as QB Drew Brees' deep threat. GRADE: B+

San Francisco 49ers: We're going to nitpick. First, kudos for getting first-round talents in RB Marcus Lattimore (Round 4) and DE Tank Carradine (Round 2), who can essentially redshirt in 2013 without counting against the Niners' already stacked 53-man roster. But given this team's talent, we would've liked to see them convert more of their picks into future selections rather than pick 11 players this year. S Eric Reid, whom the Niners came up to get at No. 18, may not be the slam dunk Vaccaro seems to be but does fill the vacancy created by Dashon Goldson's departure. With Delanie Walker also gone, TE Vance McDonald (Round 2) should play now in the team's favored double-tight sets. Like Lattimore, pass rusher Corey Lemonier (Round 3) and WR Quinton Patton (Round 4) could be impact players down the road. GRADE: B+

Jacksonville Jaguars: New GM Dave Caldwell's first draft looks like a very solid one, starting with T Luke Joeckel at No. 2. Much of the rest was devoted to the secondary, and new coach Gus Bradley oversaw an exceptional one while coordinating the Seahawks defense the past four years. Former Michigan QB Denard Robinson brings an X-factor element to the offense, but he's not going to compete with Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne (nor is anyone else barring the addition of a free agent arm). GRADE: B+

New York Jets: If you purely judge this draft off the selection of QB Geno Smith in Round 2, alarm bells sound — though given Smith's talent, at least they didn't overreach. Still, his presence creates yet more distractions, and his arrival came at the cost of patching other holes on offense. But he wasn't the only player new GM John Idzik picked. Two potential impact defenders came via Round 1 (CB Dee Milliner, DT Sheldon Richardson), and needed O-line depth was selected in Smith's wake. Idzik also acquired 25-year-old RB Chris Ivory for a fourth rounder then signed him to a very reasonable three-year, $10 million deal — all things considered, a fairly deft stroke. GRADE: B

Arizona Cardinals: Guards aren't sexy picks, but they're invariably good ones, and Jonathan Cooper immediately improves a shaky line. Kevin Minter and Alex Okafor upgrade the depth of the defense, and Minter's likely to play immediately for suspended ILB Daryl Washington. RBs Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington brought great value at the back of the draft, and either could push Rashard Mendenhall for carries. The Tyrann Mathieu selection is an intriguing risk. It's a plus that former LSU teammate Patrick Peterson can look after the erstwhile Honey Badger. But is this the best spot for Mathieu to succeed given he has to learn a new position (free safety) and may not get a chance to return many punts given how well Peterson already does that job? GRADE: B

Denver Broncos: DT Sylvester "Sly" Williams fell into their laps at No. 28 and should step into the starting lineup. Second-round RB Montee Ball could be a clock killer, while their final choice, QB Zac Dysert, might just push QB Brock Osweiler behind Peyton Manning. And if you missed it, the pass rush got some help with the arrival of veteran Shaun Phillips. GRADE: B

Oakland Raiders: Let's be honest, there's little reason to be excited about the Silver & Black in 2013. But GM Reggie McKenzie continues doing things that didn't happen prior to his arrival, namely adding draft picks rather than mortgaging them, selecting safe players, all while paring dead weight from the roster. CB D.J. Hayden (Round 1), T Menelik Watson (Round 2), and LB Sio Moore (Round 3) are all likely to start on opening day, and QB Tyler Wilson (Round 4) has a chance to surprise. For what it's worth, we would've taken DT Sharrif Floyd rather than Hayden at No. 12. GRADE: B

Atlanta Falcons: Pass defense was their biggest need, and GM Thomas Dimitroff addressed it aggressively with his first three picks by nabbing two cover guys (CBs Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford) and a pass-rush prospect (DE Malliciah Goodman). Seventh-round QB Sean Renfree is a legitimate threat to win the backup job behind Matt Ryan. GRADE: B

New York Giants: GM Jerry Reese generally ends up looking pretty smart, though it currently appears that DE Jason Pierre-Paul (2010) was his last home run. DE Damontre Moore, this year's third rounder, could fall into that category even though his market tanked in recent weeks. Round 1 OL Justin Pugh seems close to "can't miss"; Round 2 DT Johnathan Hankins, not so much. It's doubtful QB Ryan Nassib will play, but he's the kind of guy who could bring a second- or third rounder in the future. GRADE: B-

Minnesota Vikings: Floyd, viewed in some quarters as the best defensive player in the draft, dropped to them at No. 23, quite a heist for a team with an aging D-line. CB Xavier Rhodes (No. 25) has his flaws but is built to battle big WRs such as Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall. However as enviable as it appears on the surface to have three first rounders, did the Vikings really do the right thing by turning over a second-, third-, fourth- and seventh-round pick to get WR Cordarrelle Patterson, who comes with quite a few question marks (along with great physical tools), at No. 29? Time will tell. GRADE: C+

Seattle Seahawks: Let's start by admitting that GM John Schneider ends up looking like the genius at the end of the day, which he obviously proved with a watershed 2012 crop highlighted by third-round QB Russell Wilson. Not that he cares what we think, but it appears Scheider is gambling on second-round RB Christine Michael and fifth-round CB Tharold Simon. Both are talented, neither is necessarily reliable off the field, nor do they fill needs ... though in fairness, there are very few needs on this club. NT Jesse Williams (Round 5) could be Schneider's latest mid-round masterpiece. And let's not forget, their first-round pick was spent on WR/KR Percy Harvin, a talent Schneider certainly would not have found at No. 25, though a player who wore out his welcome in Minnesota. GRADE: C+

Detroit Lions: Football neophyte Ziggy Ansah is a wild card at No. 5, but the Lions coaching staff knows him as well as anyone after tutoring him at the Senior Bowl. And Ansah shouldn't see the double teams likely earmarked for DTs Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. CB Darius Slay and G Larry Warford are likely opening day starters, though we would have gone for a tackle like Watson in Round 2 rather than Slay. GRADE: C+

Philadelphia Eagles: T Lane Johnson (No. 4 overall) projects as a special player and, given his rare athleticism, is uniquely qualified for Chip Kelly's high-octane offense. However, until the curtain goes up on Kelly's attack — and the revamped defense — we're not going to claim we understand how all this fits ... or if making a move for QB Matt Barkley was the right thing to do. GRADE: C

Indianapolis Colts: Bjoern Werner is a player with few holes, though the Colts are banking on his ability to convert to outside linebacker. If you like CB Vontae Davis, trading the second-round pick last summer was a good move. The rest of the picks appear to be guys who will fight for backup jobs. GRADE: C

Washington Redskins: They're still paying for RGIII — no shame in that — and the tab will linger into 2014. However given the state of Griffin's knee, we would've liked to see improvements to the offensive line. But the Redskins chose to focus on the secondary, which is understandable, with three of their seven choices. Still, CB David Amerson (Round 2) and S Bacarri Rambo (Round 6) come with various red flags. TE Jordan Reed (Round 3) is a nice insurance policy if TE Fred Davis (Achilles' surgery) remains limited. We're not sure why two more running backs were picked given Evan Royster and Roy Helu are capable backups to Alfred Morris. GRADE: C-

Cleveland Browns: Pass rusher Barkevious Mingo could make an impact provided he puts on enough weight not to get swallowed whole by NFL tackles. Third-round CB Leon McFadden will probably start in Week 1. But the team's new brass spent much of the rest of the weekend adding picks for next year (a suggestion they don't expect to truly compete until 2014?), though we would've liked to seem rescue one of the free-falling QB prospects to compete with Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell. Thumbs up on the trade for WR Davone Bess. GRADE: C-

Miami Dolphins: If it's about supporting second-year QB Ryan Tannehill, why not get Johnson after dealing up to No. 3, especially given the apparent failure to acquire Branden Albert from the Chiefs. Pass rusher Dion Jordan ought to be a fine player but may be a year away from starting. CB Jamar Taylor was a nice get at No. 54. But we're not sold on the overall outcome after GM Jeff Ireland began the process with five of the first 82 selections. GRADE: C-

Buffalo Bills: They rolled the dice in the first three rounds with QB E.J. Manuel (consistency), LB Kiko Alonso (checkered off-field background) and WR Marquise Goodwin (good speed, questionable hands and route running). And couldn't they have waited a bit longer on Manuel? Still, if two of the three are hits, applause for GM Buddy Nix and new coach Doug Marrone. Their first Round 2 pick, WR Robert Woods, should play immediately and take heat off Stevie Johnson. GRADE: D+

New England Patriots: Picking up all those picks from Minnesota for No. 29 looked like a shrewd barter, but did the Pats invest them wisely? They've parted with two established wideouts (Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd) while TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez have both undergone recent surgeries. Translation: It may be tough to keep last season's top-rated offense humming. New England's recent draft track record for wideouts and defensive backs — they picked two apiece this year — is decidedly poor. GRADE: D

Dallas Cowboys: They probably did the right thing by trading out of the 18th spot given what was available, but why not also move down again from 31 if you've decided against Elam or fellow S Johnathan Cyprien rather than reaching for C Travis Frederick? Second-round TE Gavin Escobar is a glorified wideout who may not hold up well as Jason Witten's replacement if it comes to that one day. Fourth-round CB B.W. Webb could make an immediate impact in the return game. RB Joseph Randle (Round 5) may be thrust into action if DeMarco Murray keeps getting sidelined. GRADE: D-

***

Follow Nate Davis on Twitter @ByNateDavis

Copyright © 2013 USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Co. First, kudos for getting first-round talents in RB Marcus Lattimore (Round 4) and DE Tank Carradine (Round 2), who can essentially redshirt in 2013 without counting against the Niners’ already stacked 53-man roster. But given this team’s talent, we would’ve liked to see them convert more of their picks into future selections rather than pick 11 players this year. S Eric Reid, whom the Niners came up to get at No. 18, may not be the slam dunk Vaccaro seems to be but does fill the vacancy created by Dashon Goldson’s departure. With Delanie Walker also gone, TE Vance McDonald (Round 2) should play now in the team’s favored double-tight sets. Like Lattimore, pass rusher Corey Lemonier (Round 3) and WR Quinton Patton (Round 4) could be impact players down the road. GRADE: B+

Jacksonville Jaguars: New GM Dave Caldwell’s first draft looks like a very solid one, starting with T Luke Joeckel at No. 2. Much of the rest was devoted to the secondary, and new coach Gus Bradley oversaw an exceptional one while coordinating the Seahawks defense the past four years. Former Michigan QB Denard Robinson brings an X-factor element to the offense, but he’s not going to compete with Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne (nor is anyone else barring the addition of a free agent arm). GRADE: B+

New York Jets: If you purely judge this draft off the selection of QB Geno Smith in Round 2, alarm bells sound — though given Smith’s talent, at least they didn’t overreach. Still, his presence creates yet more distractions, and his arrival came at the cost of patching other holes on offense. But he wasn’t the only player new GM John Idzik picked. Two potential impact defenders came via Round 1 (CB Dee Milliner, DT Sheldon Richardson), and needed O-line depth was selected in Smith’s wake. Idzik also acquired 25-year-old RB Chris Ivory for a fourth rounder then signed him to a very reasonable three-year, $10 million deal — all things considered, a fairly deft stroke. GRADE: B

Arizona Cardinals: Guards aren’t sexy picks, but they’re invariably good ones, and Jonathan Cooper immediately improves a shaky line. Kevin Minter and Alex Okafor upgrade the depth of the defense, and Minter’s likely to play immediately for suspended ILB Daryl Washington. RBs Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington brought great value at the back of the draft, and either could push Rashard Mendenhall for carries. The Tyrann Mathieu selection is an intriguing risk. It’s a plus that former LSU teammate Patrick Peterson can look after the erstwhile Honey Badger. But is this the best spot for Mathieu to succeed given he has to learn a new position (free safety) and may not get a chance to return many punts given how well Peterson already does that job? GRADE: B

Denver Broncos: DT Sylvester “Sly” Williams fell into their laps at No. GRADE: B

Oakland Raiders: Let’s be honest, there’s little reason to be excited about the Silver & Black in 2013. But GM Reggie McKenzie continues doing things that didn’t happen prior to his arrival, namely adding draft picks rather than mortgaging them, selecting safe players, all while paring dead weight from the roster. CB D.J. Hayden (Round 1), T Menelik Watson (Round 2), and LB Sio Moore (Round 3) are all likely to start on opening day, and QB Tyler Wilson (Round 4) has a chance to surprise. For what it’s worth, we would’ve taken DT Sharrif Floyd rather than Hayden at No. 12.

DE Damontre Moore, this year’s third rounder, could fall into that category even though his market tanked in recent weeks. Round 1 OL Justin Pugh seems close to “can’t miss”; Round 2 DT Johnathan Hankins, not so much. It’s doubtful QB Ryan Nassib will play, but he’s the kind of guy who could bring a second- or third rounder in the future.

GRADE: C+

Seattle Seahawks: Let’s start by admitting that GM John Schneider ends up looking like the genius at the end of the day, which he obviously proved with a watershed 2012 crop highlighted by third-round QB Russell Wilson. Not that he cares what we think, but it appears Scheider is gambling on second-round RB Christine Michael and fifth-round CB Tharold Simon. Both are talented, neither is necessarily reliable off the field, nor do they fill needs … though in fairness, there are very few needs on this club. NT Jesse Williams (Round 5) could be Schneider’s latest mid-round masterpiece. And let’s not forget, their first-round pick was spent on WR/KR Percy Harvin, a talent Schneider certainly would not have found at No. 25, though a player who wore out his welcome in Minnesota. GRADE: C+

Detroit Lions: Football neophyte Ziggy Ansah is a wild card at No. 5, but the Lions coaching staff knows him as well as anyone after tutoring him at the Senior Bowl. And Ansah shouldn’t see the double teams likely earmarked for DTs Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. CB Darius Slay and G Larry Warford are likely opening day starters, though we would have gone for a tackle like Watson in Round 2 rather than Slay. GRADE: C+

Philadelphia Eagles: T Lane Johnson (No. 4 overall) projects as a special player and, given his rare athleticism, is uniquely qualified for Chip Kelly’s high-octane offense. However, until the curtain goes up on Kelly’s attack — and the revamped defense — we’re not going to claim we understand how all this fits … or if making a move for QB Matt Barkley was the right thing to do.

GRADE: C

Washington Redskins: They’re still paying for RGIII — no shame in that — and the tab will linger into 2014. However given the state of Griffin’s knee, we would’ve liked to see improvements to the offensive line. But the Redskins chose to focus on the secondary, which is understandable, with three of their seven choices. Still, CB David Amerson (Round 2) and S Bacarri Rambo (Round 6) come with various red flags. TE Jordan Reed (Round 3) is a nice insurance policy if TE Fred Davis (Achilles’ surgery) remains limited. We’re not sure why two more running backs were picked given Evan Royster and Roy Helu are capable backups to Alfred Morris. GRADE: C-

Cleveland Browns: Pass rusher Barkevious Mingo could make an impact provided he puts on enough weight not to get swallowed whole by NFL tackles. Third-round CB Leon McFadden will probably start in Week 1. But the team’s new brass spent much of the rest of the weekend adding picks for next year (a suggestion they don’t expect to truly compete until 2014?), though we would’ve liked to seem rescue one of the free-falling QB prospects to compete with Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell. Thumbs up on the trade for WR Davone Bess. GRADE: C-

Miami Dolphins: If it’s about supporting second-year QB Ryan Tannehill, why not get Johnson after dealing up to No. 3, especially given the apparent failure to acquire Branden Albert from the Chiefs. Pass rusher Dion Jordan ought to be a fine player but may be a year away from starting. CB Jamar Taylor was a nice get at No. 54. But we’re not sold on the overall outcome after GM Jeff Ireland began the process with five of the first 82 selections. GRADE: C-

Buffalo Bills: They rolled the dice in the first three rounds with QB E.J. Manuel (consistency), LB Kiko Alonso (checkered off-field background) and WR Marquise Goodwin (good speed, questionable hands and route running). And couldn’t they have waited a bit longer on Manuel? Still, if two of the three are hits, applause for GM Buddy Nix and new coach Doug Marrone. Their first Round 2 pick, WR Robert Woods, should play immediately and take heat off Stevie Johnson. GRADE: D+

New England Patriots: Picking up all those picks from Minnesota for No. 29 looked like a shrewd barter, but did the Pats invest them wisely? They’ve parted with two established wideouts (Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd) while TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez have both undergone recent surgeries. Translation: It may be tough to keep last season’s top-rated offense humming. New England’s recent draft track record for wideouts and defensive backs — they picked two apiece this year — is decidedly poor. GRADE: D

Dallas Cowboys: They probably did the right thing by trading out of the 18th spot given what was available, but why not also move down again from 31 if you’ve decided against Elam or fellow S Johnathan Cyprien rather than reaching for C Travis Frederick? Second-round TE Gavin Escobar is a glorified wideout who may not hold up well as Jason Witten’s replacement if it comes to that one day. Fourth-round CB B.W. Webb could make an immediate impact in the return game. RB Joseph Randle (Round 5) may be thrust into action if DeMarco Murray keeps getting sidelined. GRADE: D-

For the 254 youngsters newly vetted as NFL rookies, the 2013 draft forever will be a landmark moment in their lives. But the event sends a different message to the league’s current players, namely, “You’ve been put on notice.”

Almost no one is safe.

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak knows this from experience even though his 12-year playing career landed him in the Hall of Fame. “It doesn’t matter what position you draft,” he said, “it creates uncomfortableness, it creates questions.”

Perhaps no one is more uneasy than New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, whose play has steadily declined the past two years (52 total turnovers in that span) after his first two seasons ended with AFC Championship Game losses. Enter Geno Smith, the highly touted touted West Virginia quarterback who fell into the waiting arms of new Jets general manager John Idzik with the 39th pick after some prognostications that Smith was worthy of a top-five selection failed to materialize.

“What this means for Mark Sanchez is competition, and Mark is open to that,” Idzik said. “We’ve had discussions about that, and I think he buys into the fact that that helps him and it helps any player on our team.”

Those discussions apparently didn’t include head coach Rex Ryan, who admitted during an NFL Network interview Saturday that he hadn’t spoken to Sanchez since the Jets called Smith’s name Friday. Ryan gladly joined himself to Sanchez’s hip when both arrived in New York in 2009, but now oversees a quarterback room with five other players, including veteran David Garrard and controversial Tim Tebow (for now), vying for Sanchez’s seemingly tenuous playing time.

Smith even out-Rexed Ryan by predicting a Jets playoff berth this season while announcing, “My goal is to be a franchise quarterback.”

Trouble in Tampa?

Sanchez’s 2009 draft mate, Josh Freeman of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, undoubtedly shares Smith’s sentiment. But Freeman has watched the Bucs earmark nearly $250 million over the past year to cornerback Darrelle Revis (late of the Jets), receiver Vincent Jackson, guard Carl Nicks and safety Dashon Goldson while opting not to extend his contract, which expires after this season. GM Mark Dominik drafted his own promising quarterback, North Carolina State’s Mike Glennon, in the third round Friday.

“If something happens to Josh Freeman, we want to be able to keep the season rolling,” Dominik said in a reference to the team’s depth chart, but a statement that could be interpretted differently in 2014 if Freeman merely plays well enough for the team to again sniff the playoffs.

Making a run at Gore

The NFC champion San Francisco 49ers appear far better equipped for another postseason run. But their already enviable roster could be in for a shakeup after GM Trent Baalke decided to keep most of his draft picks and added 11 new players to the mix.

One of them was South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, widely regarded as the draft’s most gifted runner, though he could spend 2013 on injured reserve as he continues rehabilitating the three knee ligaments he sheared last October. Head coach Jim Harbaugh promised the Niners will “make sure Marcus is 100% healthy before he goes out there on the field. If he doesn’t play this year, then he doesn’t play this year.”

What about next year? Well, quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be eligible for, presumably, a deserved raise for the first time while Baalke will also be weighing new deals for wideout Michael Crabtree, pass rusher Aldon Smith, guard Mike Iupati and safety Donte Whitner, among others. The tea leaves can change, but with Lattimore waiting in the wings, incumbent Frank Gore probably shouldn’t count on his $6.5 million salary or a roster spot in 2014, when he’ll be 31.

Yet it’s not just the big-name players looking over their shoulders. Every veteran clinging to the bottom of a roster that holds just 53 names knows he must play that much better to beat out rookies who boast younger legs and, often, cheaper contracts.

Free-agent competition

Even newly signed free agents aren’t immune in a hyper-competitive league.

Running back Rashard Mendenhall and linebacker Rolando McClain are both former first rounders who have yet reached their 26th birthdays. A few weeks ago, they were probably anticipating fresh starts with their new clubs.

That was before Mendenhall watched the Arizona Cardinals pounce on not one, but two promising running backs (Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington) Saturday.

McClain, who was the eighth pick of the 2010 draft but wore out his welcome with the Oakland Raiders, received a lifeline from fellow former Crimson Tide star Ozzie Newsome this month. That was before McClain was again arrested in his hometown of Decatur, Ala. His third arrest in less than 17 months came nine days after the Ravens acquired him.

The response from Newsome, the Baltimore Ravens GM?

He spent a second-round pick on Kansas State star Arthur Brown, who happens to play inside linebacker, the same position as McClain

“We have some pretty good linebackers, guys who have played a lot of football, but Arthur is a motivated guy,” Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta said of Brown. “I think he’s a mature player, a very talented player.”

Feel free to read between the lines. A lot of veterans are doing the same right now.

The reigning conference defensive MVP (12 sacks his senior season) comes complete with the black war paint, plays to the echo of the whistle and has good measurables. At 6-3, 271 pounds, he seems like a bit of a 'tweener, and might have to show he can play some outside linebacker and special teams to stick on the roster or practice squad. Learning the playbook? Shouldn't be a problem.

2 (208) Jaguars: Jeremy Harris, CB, New Mexico State

3 (209) Raiders: Brice Butler, WR, San Diego State

4 (210) Jaguars (from Eagles): Demetrius McCray, CB, Appalachian State

5 (211) Lions: Michael Williams, TE, Alabama

6 (212) Eagles (from Browns): Joe Kruger, DE, Utah

Analysis: It has been a good year for the Krugers.
Pick-by-pick results and analysis for Round 7:

Pick in Round 7; (overall pick); team; selection

1 (207) Chiefs: Mike Catapano, DE, Princeton

Analysis: Catapano is the latest entry from a strong draft for the Ivy League. The reigning conference defensive MVP (12 sacks his senior season) comes complete with the black war paint, plays to the echo of the whistle and has good measurables. At 6-3, 271 pounds, he seems like a bit of a ‘tweener, and might have to show he can play some outside linebacker and special teams to stick on the roster or practice squad. Learning the playbook? Shouldn’t be a problem.

Paul won a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens before signing a five-year, $41 million contract with the Browns. Saturday, his younger brother Joe was drafted by the Eagles. Like Paul, Joe might not be an instant success in the NFL. But he could be a round peg going into a round hole as Philadelphia moves to a 3-4 defense.

7 (213) Vikings (from Cardinals): Michael Mauti, LB, Penn State

Analysis: If not for a string of knee injuries, Mauti’s pro outlook might be rosier. Still, he was instrumental in leading his teammates through the darkest chapter in the history of Nittany Lions football, and those kind of intangibles are welcome in any locker room. If he can get healthy, Mauti might compete for the middle linebacker post.

8 (214) Vikings (from Bills through Seahawks): Travis Bond, G, North Carolina

Analysis: The Tar Heels guard did well in spring workouts and is certainly tough. He got hit by a truck on campus but got up and walked away from the incident. At 329 pounds, he’d at least look imposing next to 343-pound right tackle Phil Loadholt.

Analysis: Motta appears to be a very good value pick — what else would he be in Round 7? — who will provide depth behind Pro Bowlers William Moore and Thomas DeCoud. Look for Motta to make a name on special teams assuming he manages to stick on the roster.

39 (245) Lions (Compensatory Selection): Brandon Hepburn, LB, Florida A&M

Analysis: The Falcons are set for the rest of the decade under center. Who will back up Matt Ryan is an open question. Renfree was a good player on a bad Blue Devils team but could stick in Atlanta, certainly on the practice squad at the very least.

44 (250) Dolphins (Compensatory Selection): Don Jones, SS, Arkansas State

Analysis: For the second consecutive year, the Colts wind up with the final pick and Mr. Irrelevant, who turned out to be QB Chandler Harnish in 2012. This year’s winner of the Lowsman Trophy (not the Heisman Trophy, seriously) is Cunningham. Fellow Gamecock Ryan Succop was Mr. Irrelevant in 2009 and is still kicking strong for the Chiefs.

Pick-by-pick results for Round 5 of the 2013 NFL draft:

1 (134) Chiefs: Sanders Commings, CB, Georgia

2 (135) Jaguars: Denard Robinson, WR, Michigan

Analysis: Robinson is a dynamic athlete. The former Wolverines quarterback won’t be competing with Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne, but he might very well help one of them cement the starting job if he can bring a Percy Harvin-esque dimension to a moribund offense. Look for Robinson to be in the slot, in the backfield with Maurice Jones-Drew and playing on any number of special teams units.

3 (136) Eagles: Earl Wolff, SS, N.C. State

4 (137) Seahawks (from Lions): Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama

Analysis: Williams, an Australian native who grew up playing rugby, is about the most mobile 323-pounder you’ll ever see lining up over the ball. He should form quite a tandem with DT Brandon Mebane and more than eases the departure of up-and-down Alan Branch. A relentless defense just gets deeper and nastier with a player who brings more winning pedigree.

5 (138) Seahawks (from Raiders): Tharold Simon, CB, Louisiana State

6 (139) Colts (from Browns): Montori Hughes, DT, Tennessee-Martin

7 (140) Cardinals: Stephan Taylor, RB, Stanford

Analysis: More NFC West reinforcements. Taylor is Stanford smart and extremely productive, racking up more than 4,700 yards of offense in a solid Pac-12 over the past three seasons. Beanie Wells is gone, Ryan Williams can’t stay on the field, and Rashard Mendenhall is a total wild card. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Taylor carve out a major niche in Bruce Arians’ attack.

8 (141) Jets: Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia

9 (142) Titans: Lavar Edwards, DE, Louisiana State

10 (143) Bills: Johnathan Meeks, S, Clemson

11 (144) Saints: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma

Analysis: Stills can blaze down the field. He ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. The Saints need that dimension with Devery Henderson still floating in free agency limbo. Even if Stills doesn’t catch many passes as a rookie, he could emerge as an important component of this attack.

12 (145) Chargers: Steve Williams, CB, California

13 (146) Broncos (from Dolphins through Packers): Quanterus Smith, DE, Western Kentucky

14 (147) Buccaneers: Steven Means, DE, Buffalo

15 (148) Panthers: A.J. Klein, LB, Iowa State

16 (149) Rams: Brandon McGee, CB, Miami

17 (150) Steelers: Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois

Analysis: Hawthorne joins a defensive backfield that saw CB Keenan Lewis bolt in free agency. Hawthorne’s size (6-0, 195) is similar to that of veteran Ike Taylor, who turns 33 next month. Size is an asset for AFC North corners in a division featuring A.J. Green, Torrey Smith, Greg Little and Josh Gordon.

18 (151) Cowboys: Joseph Randle, RB, Oklahoma State

Analysis: Don’t be surprised if Randle, a workhorse for the Cowboys of Stillwater the past two years (553 total touches), gets on the field for the NFL Cowboys. Starter DeMarco Murray is talented but has missed nine games in his first two seasons, and backup Felix Jones has not re-signed.

19 (152) Giants: Cooper Taylor, S, Richmond

20 (153) Falcons (from Bears): Stansly Maponga, DE, Texas Christian

21 (154) Redskins: Chris Thompson, RB, Florida State

22 (155) Vikings: Jeff Locke, P, UCLA

Analysis: The Vikes struck all-pro gold in Round 6 last year when they snared K Blair Walsh. Given that track record, don’t be the least bit surprised to see Locke beat out Chris Kluwe, who’s focus on social issues has drawn some ire from coaches who think his punting has suffered.

23 (156) Bengals: Tanner Hawkinson, OT, Kansas

24 (157) 49ers (from Colts): Quinton Dial, DE, Alabama

25 (158) Seahawks: Luke Wilson, TE, Rice

26 (159) Packers: Micah Hyde, FS, Iowa

Analysis: Hyde comes from the school that produced Bob Sanders and goes to a team that lost another star defensive back with Big Ten roots, Charles Woodson.

27 (160) Rams (from Texans): Zac Stacy, RB, Vanderbilt

Analysis: It’s rare to see a Vandy runner garner all-Southeastern Conference honors, but Stacy has more than 2,500 offensive yards and 24 TDs over the past two seasons. Short (5-8) but solid (216 pounds), he goes to a St. Louis squad that probably will divide the rushing workload since Steven Jackson has moved on.

28 (161) Broncos: Tavarres King, WR, Georgia

29 (162) Redskins (from Patriots): Brandon Jenkins, DE, Florida State

30 (163) Bears (from Falcons): Jordan Mills, OT, Louisiana Tech

Analysis: It’s hard to envision a fifth-rounder assuming a prominent role on most teams, but former seventh-rounder J’Marcus Webb has had his struggles for the Bears and is switching sides because of the arrival of left tackle Jermon Bushrod in free agency.

31 (164) Dolphins (from 49ers through Browns): Mike Gillislee, RB, Florida

32 (165) Lions (from Ravens through Seahawks): Sam Martin, P, Appalachian State

33 (166) Dolphins (Compensatory Selection): Caleb Sturgis, K, Florida

Analysis: A fifth-round run on special teamers concludes with Sturgis, whose arrival obviously calls former Pro Bowler Dan Carpenter’s job security into question despite converting 82% of his field goal tries in 2012.

34 (167) Packers (Compensatory Selection): Josh Boyd, DT, Mississippi State

Analysis: Stills can blaze down the field. He ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. The Saints need that dimension with Devery Henderson still floating in free agency limbo. Even if Stills doesn’t catch many passes as a rookie, he could emerge as an important component of this attack.

Analysis: The Vikes struck all-pro gold in Round 6 last year when they snared K Blair Walsh. Given that track record, don’t be the least bit surprised to see Locke beat out Chris Kluwe, who’s focus on social issues has drawn some ire from coaches who think his punting has suffered.

23 (156) Bengals: Tanner Hawkinson, OT, Kansas

Analysis: It’s hard to envision a fifth-rounder assuming a prominent role on most teams, but former seventh-rounder J’Marcus Webb has had his struggles for the Bears and is switching sides because of the arrival of left tackle Jermon Bushrod in free agency.

31 (164) Dolphins (from 49ers through Browns): Mike Gillislee, RB, Florida

32 (165) Lions (from Ravens through Seahawks): Sam Martin, P, Appalachian State

Analysis: A fifth-round run on special teamers concludes with Sturgis, whose arrival obviously calls former Pro Bowler Dan Carpenter’s job security into question despite converting 82% of his field goal tries in 2012.

34 (167) Packers (Compensatory Selection): Josh Boyd, DT, Mississippi State

Kelce is a devastating blocker who should be a nice complement to Tony Moeaki in double-tight sets. Kelce's brother, Jason, is the center for the Eagles, who also have former Cincinnati TE Brent Celek on their roster. You wonder if Andy Reid had some inside info on Travis Kelce before he packed up for Kansas City.

2 (64) Jaguars: Dwayne Gratz, CB Connecticut

Analysis: The Jags continue rounding out their secondary with Gratz after grabbing John Cyprien in Round 2. Gus Bradley's very successful and forward-looking defense was built back to front in Seattle, and he seems to be following a similar template in Jacksonville.

3 (65) Lions: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky

Analysis: Finally, some help in front of QB Matthew Stafford. Warford's arrival essentially guarantees that 2012 first-rounder Riley Reiff will stay at tackle. Look for Reggie Bush to run behind massive Warford and break off chunks of yardage.

4 (66) Raiders: Sio Moore, LB, Connecticut

Analysis: The Raiders will look far different at linebacker. Moore joins Nick Roach in a new mix after the team let Philip Wheeler go and told Rolando McClain to take a hike. Moore is still learning to play the position after converting from running back when he arrived at UConn.

5 (67) Eagles: Bennie Logan, DT, Louisiana State

Analysis: The latest addition from LSU's pro pipeline might have a leg up on some incumbent defenders — Trent Cole? Brandon Graham? — who might not fit a defense that's expected to line up primarily in 3-4 fronts after years in the 4-3 under Andy Reid.

6 (68) Browns: Leon McFadden, CB, San Diego State

Analysis: The Browns were in desperate need for a corner opposite Joe Haden after choosing to let Sheldon Brown go in free agency. McFadden's not a big guy, and neither is Buster Skrine, which makes us wonder if the Mohamed Sanus and Jacoby Joneses of the division will feast on this guy while Haden is preoccupied with the AFC North's No. 1 receivers.

7 (69) Cardinals: Tyrann Mathieu, CB, Louisiana State

Analysis: A stroke of luck for Mathieu since former LSU teammate Patrick Peterson can look after him in the desert. Coach Bruce Arians says Mathieu will play free safety in the NFL, which will help take advantage of his ball-hawking skills.

8 (70) Titans: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut

Analysis: The Titans make the first draft addition to a defense that surrendered a franchise-record 471 points in 2012. Wilson could push Alterraun Verner for snaps if he makes a smooth transition to the NFL.

9 (71) Rams (from Bills): T.J. McDonald, FS, Southern California

Analysis: The Rams address their safety issues after bidding Quintin Mikell and Craig Dahl adieu in the offseason. McDonald has NFL bloodlines; his father Tim was a six-time Pro Bowler who spent much of his career with the 49ers in the 1990s. Like dad, the son is a heavy hitter.

10 (72) Jets: Brian Winters, OT, Kent State

Analysis: The Jets have two holes at guard after choosing not to re-sign Brandon Moore and Matt Slauson — and Austin Howard isn't exactly entrenched at right tackle. Winters could quickly find himself in the starting mix if he can merely beat out disappointing Vlad Ducasse, and he might even force Howard inside instead.

11 (73) Buccaneers: Mike Glennon, OB, North Carolina State

Analysis: At 6-7 with an easygoing demeanor and a big arm, Glennon draws loose comparisons to Joe Flacco. He's not likely to start this season, but now Josh Freeman has a prospect with potential looking over his shoulder in a contract year. The knocks on Glennon are lack of athleticism and fire in the huddle.

12 (74) Cowboys (from Panthers through 49ers): Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor

Analysis: Williams could immediately compete for the No. 3 job vacated by Kevin Ogletree. And given the frequent issues Miles Austin seems to have with his legs, it's not a bad idea for the Cowboys to get an insurance policy after losing Ogletree and Laurent Robinson over the past two offseasons.

13 (75) Saints: Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Analysis: New Orleans commits its second pick of the draft to its offensive line. Armstead might grow into a blindside tackle with a year of development but probably will be a project who won't play right away since the Saints are set at guard with Jahri Evans and Ben Grubbs. Armstead also could see snaps as a third tight end assuming Zach Strief holds down the fort at right tackle.

14 (76) Chargers: Keenan Allen, WR, California

Analysis: Allen's knee surgery and news reports of a failed drug test at the scouting combine apparently deflated his once-impressive stock. But new Chargers GM Tom Telesco might have gotten a steal here, and the Chargers surely need one because Robert Meachem flopped after signing a big contract in 2012. Allen should join TE Antonio Gates as a medium-range target for Philip Rivers while Malcom Floyd and Danario Alexander do most of the work on the outside.

15 (77) Dolphins: Dallas Thomas, OT, Tennessee

Analysis: He projects as a guard, maybe a right tackle in the NFL. With the Branden Albert option seemingly off the table, Thomas might get pressed into service with Jonathan Martin apparently ticketed to take over for free agent loss Jake Long.

16 (78) Bills (from Ravens): Marquise Goodwin, WR, Texas

Analysis: After grabbing Robert Woods in Round 2, the Bills go for a more athletic target as they continue rebuilding the wideout depth for QB EJ Manuel.

17 (79) Steelers: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State

Analysis: Physically, Wheaton resembles Antonio Brown more than Mike Wallace. It's possible Wheaton could claim the No. 3 role behind Brown and Emmanuel Sanders when the Steelers are operating between the 20-yard lines before giving way to Plaxico Burress in the red zone.

18 (80) Cowboys: J.J. Wilcox, FS, Georgia Southern

Analysis: The Cowboys admitted safety was an area of need all along, though Dallas fans probably would have felt much better about Kenny Vaccaro or Eric Reid, whom the Cowboys essentially gave to the 49ers. Still, Wilcox should get a chance to compete for snaps in an underwhelming group.

19 (81) Giants: Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M

Analysis: The Giants end the free fall of a guy once touted as a potential top-five pick. Moore flopped at the combine and apparently never recovered afterward. But he'll have an opportunity to claim Osi Umenyiora's nickel rusher role in New York and might eventually develop into the player many think he can be in the NFL.

20 (82) Saints (from Bears through Dolphins): John Jenkins, DT, Georgia

Analysis: When you switch to the 3-4 defensive alignment, you need a beast to man the nose. They don't come much bigger than 6-4, 346-pound Jenkins, who should be hard to move when the Saints are in their base defense.

21 (83) Patriots (from Vikings): Ryan Logan, CB, Rutgers

Analysis: The Patriots have struggled to develop corners — Darius Butler, Ras-I Dowling, Patrick Chung, Terrence Wheatley – and even Devin McCourty has been moved to safety. They take another whack with Ryan, who could get into dime packages behind Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard and Kyle Arrington.

22 (84) Bengals: Shawn Williams, SS, Georgia

Analysis: The Bengals seemed to struggle without Chris Crocker, who's no longer on the roster. Williams could get a shot at his spot next to starting FS Reggie Nelson.

23 (85) Redskins: Jordan Reed, TE, Florida

Analysis: The Redskins re-signed Fred Davis, but who knows how he'll respond after tearing an Achilles last October. Reed provides a fallback who's more athletic than Logan Paulsen.

24 (86) Colts: Hugh Thornton, G, Illinois

Analysis: The Colts signed OT Gosder Cherilus and G Donald Thomas to better safeguard QB Andrew Luck after he was frequently under fire as a rookie. Massive Thornton (320 pounds) might just give starting RG Mike McGlynn a run for his money.

25 (87) Seahawks: Jordan Hill, DT, Penn State

Analysis: Seattle has done quite a bit on the edges of its defense this offseason but could use more heft inside after losing Alan Branch to the Bills. Hill could get into the rotation next to the team's best interior player, Brandon Mebane.

26 (88) 49ers (from Packers): Corey Lemonier, DE, Auburn

Analysis: None other than Luke Joeckel mentioned Lemonier as a pass rusher who gave him problems in their Southeastern Conference battles.

Pick-by-pick results for Round 3 of the 2013 NFL draft:

Pick in Round 3; (overall pick); team; selection

1 (63) Chiefs: Travis Kelce, TE, Cincinnati

Analysis: The Chiefs begin Round 3 with LT Branden Albert on their roster as well as Kelce, an outstanding combination tight end. Kelce is a devastating blocker who should be a nice complement to Tony Moeaki in double-tight sets. Kelce’s brother, Jason, is the center for the Eagles, who also have former Cincinnati TE Brent Celek on their roster.

Gus Bradley’s very successful and forward-looking defense was built back to front in Seattle, and he seems to be following a similar template in Jacksonville.

3 (65) Lions: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky

Analysis: Finally, some help in front of QB Matthew Stafford. Warford’s arrival essentially guarantees that 2012 first-rounder Riley Reiff will stay at tackle.

Analysis: The latest addition from LSU’s pro pipeline might have a leg up on some incumbent defenders — Trent Cole? Brandon Graham? — who might not fit a defense that’s expected to line up primarily in 3-4 fronts after years in the 4-3 under Andy Reid.

6 (68) Browns: Leon McFadden, CB, San Diego State

Analysis: The Browns were in desperate need for a corner opposite Joe Haden after choosing to let Sheldon Brown go in free agency. McFadden’s not a big guy, and neither is Buster Skrine, which makes us wonder if the Mohamed Sanus and Jacoby Joneses of the division will feast on this guy while Haden is preoccupied with the AFC North’s No.

Analysis: The Jets have two holes at guard after choosing not to re-sign Brandon Moore and Matt Slauson — and Austin Howard isn’t exactly entrenched at right tackle.

He’s not likely to start this season, but now Josh Freeman has a prospect with potential looking over his shoulder in a contract year.

And given the frequent issues Miles Austin seems to have with his legs, it’s not a bad idea for the Cowboys to get an insurance policy after losing Ogletree and Laurent Robinson over the past two offseasons.

13 (75) Saints: Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Analysis: New Orleans commits its second pick of the draft to its offensive line. Armstead might grow into a blindside tackle with a year of development but probably will be a project who won’t play right away since the Saints are set at guard with Jahri Evans and Ben Grubbs. Armstead also could see snaps as a third tight end assuming Zach Strief holds down the fort at right tackle.

14 (76) Chargers: Keenan Allen, WR, California

Analysis: Allen’s knee surgery and news reports of a failed drug test at the scouting combine apparently deflated his once-impressive stock.

It’s possible Wheaton could claim the No.

But he’ll have an opportunity to claim Osi Umenyiora’s nickel rusher role in New York and might eventually develop into the player many think he can be in the NFL.

20 (82) Saints (from Bears through Dolphins): John Jenkins, DT, Georgia

Analysis: When you switch to the 3-4 defensive alignment, you need a beast to man the nose. They don’t come much bigger than 6-4, 346-pound Jenkins, who should be hard to move when the Saints are in their base defense.

Analysis: The Bengals seemed to struggle without Chris Crocker, who’s no longer on the roster. Williams could get a shot at his spot next to starting FS Reggie Nelson.

23 (85) Redskins: Jordan Reed, TE, Florida

Analysis: The Redskins re-signed Fred Davis, but who knows how he’ll respond after tearing an Achilles last October. Reed provides a fallback who’s more athletic than Logan Paulsen.

Hill could get into the rotation next to the team’s best interior player, Brandon Mebane.

26 (88) 49ers (from Packers): Corey Lemonier, DE, Auburn

Analysis: None other than Luke Joeckel mentioned Lemonier as a pass rusher who gave him problems in their Southeastern Conference battles. But Lemonier will have work to earn his stripes behind Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks.

27 (89) Texans: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina

Analysis: Houston isn’t exactly set at right tackle after watching several players try to take over for Eric Winston last season. Williams provides competition for Derek Newton and Ryan Harris.

28 (90) Broncos: Kayvon Webster, CB, South Florida

Analysis: Champ Bailey isn’t getting any younger and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is on a one-year deal. Two pretty good guys for Webster to watch and develop behind.

29 (91) Patriots: Duron Harmon, S, Rutgers

Analysis: Bill Belichick is making a run on Scarlet Knights defensive backs. Devin McCourty, Adrian Wilson, Steve Gregory and Tavon Wilson are ahead of Harmon on a crowded depth chart.

30 (92) Rams (from Falcons): Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia

Analysis: Geno Smith’s favorite wide receiver since high school must now win over Sam Bradford, who also will be throwing to ex-Mountaineers dynamo Tavon Austin in 2013. GM Les Snead is quickly putting the pieces around Bradford that could finally lead to a breakthrough season from the fourth-year passer.

31 (93) Dolphins (from 49ers through Packers): Will Davis, CB, Utah State

Analysis: Davis is the second corner Miami took Friday and might find time in sub packages. However, given the Bills have relied on their dual tailbacks as playmakers and the Patriots on their tight end tandem, the AFC East is one division where teams might still employ their base defense more than the nickel.

Analysis: A wake-up call for Terrence Cody? Ozzie Newsome has expressed disappointment in his nose tackle, and Williams (335 pounds) could quickly vie for time in the middle of Baltimore’s revamped defense.

33 (95) Texans (compensatory pick): Sam Montgomery, DE, Louisiana State

Analysis: The Titans close out Round 3 by adding depth to what is an already young and talented linebacking group. But given Colin McCarthy’s struggles to stay on the field in 2012, there could be playing time to be had for an athletic youngster.

Source: USA TODAY

Three rounds of the NFL draft down, four to go Saturday. Today's story will surely revolve around the prominent quarterbacks yet to come off the board, but there are several other names to keep an eye on:

QB Matt Barkley, USC: Projected as a high first-round pick had he entered the 2012 draft, Barkley, who hurt his shoulder at the end of last season, is still waiting the NFL's call in what is almost universally regarded as a weak quarterback draft. It's hard not to admire his leadership and production, but how much is the medical packet and less-than-stellar arm scaring teams? And remember, Trojan passers don't necessarily have a strong NFL track record. Possible fit: Cardinals

QB Ryan Nassib, Syracuse: So much for possibly sneaking into the first round and reuniting with former Orange coach Doug Marrone in Buffalo. Nassib's moxie and field presence seem to be off the charts, but his accuracy seems to be all over the chart. Possible fit: Jaguars

QB Matt Scott, Arizona: Don't be surprised to hear his name called before better known passers such as Tyler Bray, Tyler Wilson or Landry Jones. Scott has the arm and mobility teams that favor the read-option scheme will value, skills that could also make him a highly coveted backup. Possible fit: 49ers

RB Johnathan Franklin, UCLA: He's got decent vision and size (5-10, 205) and enough speed. He's not ready to be a three-down back, and ball security is an issue, but Franklin is probably good enough to start as a rookie. Possible fit: Colts

RB Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina: No back in this entire draft possesses the talent of Lattimore, who was a beloved teammate with the Gamecocks.
Three rounds of the NFL draft down, four to go Saturday. Today’s story will surely revolve around the prominent quarterbacks yet to come off the board, but there are several other names to keep an eye on:

QB Matt Barkley, USC: Projected as a high first-round pick had he entered the 2012 draft, Barkley, who hurt his shoulder at the end of last season, is still waiting the NFL’s call in what is almost universally regarded as a weak quarterback draft. It’s hard not to admire his leadership and production, but how much is the medical packet and less-than-stellar arm scaring teams? And remember, Trojan passers don’t necessarily have a strong NFL track record. Possible fit: Cardinals

QB Ryan Nassib, Syracuse: So much for possibly sneaking into the first round and reuniting with former Orange coach Doug Marrone in Buffalo. Nassib’s moxie and field presence seem to be off the charts, but his accuracy seems to be all over the chart. Possible fit: Jaguars

QB Matt Scott, Arizona: Don’t be surprised to hear his name called before better known passers such as Tyler Bray, Tyler Wilson or Landry Jones. Scott has the arm and mobility teams that favor the read-option scheme will value, skills that could also make him a highly coveted backup. Possible fit: 49ers

RB Johnathan Franklin, UCLA: He’s got decent vision and size (5-10, 205) and enough speed. He’s not ready to be a three-down back, and ball security is an issue, but Franklin is probably good enough to start as a rookie. Possible fit: Colts

RB Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina: No back in this entire draft possesses the talent of Lattimore, who was a beloved teammate with the Gamecocks. Of course, he comes with asterisks, namely four torn knee ligaments over the last two years. A team that can afford to stash him on IR for a season might get hugely rewarded in 2014. Possible fit: 49ers

WR Quinton Patton, Louisiana Tech: Starring against WAC competition isn’t exactly a plus, but he might be good enough to develop into a No. 1 wideout given time and coaching. Possible fit: Raiders

OL Barrett Jones, Alabama: Twice a consensus All-American, he’s played every position on the offensive line. He’s very intelligent and tough, playing through a Lisfranc injury to win a third ring with the Tide at the end of the 2012 season. Possible fit: Jaguars

DE Alex Okafor, Texas: Not necessarily a lot of flash here, but Okafor can probably plug in as a base left end for a 4-3 team from Day 1. Possible fit: Buccaneers

NT Jesse Williams, Alabama: Aussie transplant is that rarest of things — a nose tackle that ranges all over the field. And at 6-3, 323 pounds, Williams also eats up plenty of space. Possible fit: Texans

LB Khaseem Greene, Rutgers: Productive player who can cover a lot ground if he’s not asked to take on a lot of guards. Possible fit: Lions

LB Mike Mauti, Penn State: All-American has non-stop motor and finely tuned leadership skills that helped galvanize his teammates through some of the most difficult seasons in the history of Nittany Lion football. His knee injuries haven’t helped his stock, but the NFL won’t be too big for him once he arrives. Possible fit: Vikings

CB B.W. Webb, William & Mary: Smart, small-school guy who held up well against the big boys at the Senior Bowl. Can return kicks and ideally suited to the slot. Possible fit: Eagles

S Shamarko Thomas, Syracuse: He’s short (5-9) but not small (213 pounds). Thomas can lay the wood to running backs but has enough wiggle to be an asset in coverage. He’ll make a nice rover somewhere. Possible fit: Panthers

Source: USA TODAY

Pick-by-pick results for Round 2 of the 2013 NFL draft:

Pick in Round 2; (overall pick); team; selection

1 (33) Jaguars: Johnathan Cyprien, S, Florida International

Analysis: Jags go with a nice combination safety out of the box for a team that will begin rebuilding its defense under new coach Gus Bradley, who coordinated the Seattle Seahawks defense the past few seasons. Cyprien moves upstate and will likely team with Dwight Lowery to improve a pass defense that ranked 22nd in 2012. However, look for Cyprien to roam the box quite a bit against a slew of tough AFC North runners.

2 (34) Titans (from Chiefs from 49ers): Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee

After plugging in G Chance Warmack on Thursday, Tennessee plucks a player out of Knoxville by adding the speedy Hunter. He should stretch the field, which should enable him to take advantage of Locker's arm while also adding further running room for RB Chris Johnson and slot WR Kendall Wright. However, Hunter's addition will also raise questions about the future of injury- and arrest-prone WR Kenny Britt and veteran WR Nate Washington, who's essentially been the designated deep man since coming to Nashville in 2009.

3 (35) Eagles: Zach Ertz, TE Stanford

Analysis: The Eagles continue adding parts to an offense whose unveiling will be highly anticipated. Coach Chip Kelly has seen plenty of Ertz from their days in the Pac-12 — Ertz helped beat the Ducks in 2012 — and surely has a good idea about how he'll deploy him along with Brent Celek, an underrated athlete himself. Could this also signal another long night for QB Geno Smith? Smith met extensively with the Eagles in the draft run-up but has now been bypassed by the team twice.

4 (36) Lions: Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State

Analysis: Interesting that the Lions continue to avoid upgrading their O-line after losing both of last season's starting tackles. You wonder if they might choose to make a run at an unsigned free agent such as Tyson Clabo, though that would require some salary cap creativity from GM Martin Mayhew. But it's hard to argue with the selection of Slay, who addresses another hole on the depth chart. And when you're facing Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler and an improved Minnesota receiving corps on a regular basis, it's probably a good idea to get a better wingman to pair with re-signed CB Chris Houston.

5 (37) Bengals (from Raiders): Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina

Analysis: One night after enlisting TE Tyler Eifert, the Bengals wisely continue adding parts around third-year QB Andy Dalton. Bernard is shifty, a good pass catcher and can return kicks — all things that starting RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis doesn't do very well. Cincinnati's lack of explosiveness outside of WR A.J. Green was a major reason the Texans scuttled them in the playoffs the past two seasons.

6 (38) Chargers (from Cardinals) Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame

Analysis: It took two nights and 38 picks, but the former Irish star is finally off the board … and he gets to play about as close as possible to his native Hawaii. Te'o may have to beat out either Jonas Mouton or Donald Butler, high picks in recent seasons, to grab a starting inside linebacker post. But given the Bolts' deal up to get Te'o, you'd have to think the Notre Dame team captain has an inside track to star on a quietly effective and young unit.

7 (39) Jets: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia

Analysis: Good thing Smith stayed in New York an extra day as he was evidently the best player on the Jets' board. He enters a crowded QB room that also includes — for now — Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Greg McElroy, Matt Simms and Tim Tebow. None of them has played for new OC Marty Mornhinweg, so they're all starting fresh for a franchise that has gone back to Square 1. But given that Sanchez's contract seems to lock him onto the roster for 2013, this pick seems pretty questionable. And the Jets are also a team that needs two guards, a tight end and a running back — at minimum — on an offense that was frequently punchless in 2012. Welcome to New York, Geno.

8 (40) 49ers (from Titans): Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State

Analysis: The rich get richer in San Francisco. Carradine tore an ACL late last season but could eventually be a better pro than Seminoles linemate Bjoern Werner, who went to the Colts in Round 1. Carradine improves a depleted line and but will have the time to get healthy behind Justin Smith, Glenn Dorsey and Ray McDonald. Carradine's arrival could also mean more four-man fronts in San Francisco — as that's what he normally did in Tallahassee.

9 (41) Bills: Robert Woods, WR, Southern California

Analysis: Good pick. The Bills really haven't had a strong complement to WR Stevie Johnson but now add a weapon for Kevin Kolb and/or first-round QB E.J. Manuel. Woods played in a pro-style offense for the Trojans and has a reputation as a strong route runner.

10 (42) Raiders (from Dolphins): Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State

Analysis: Watson, who hails from Manchester, England, should form a new bookend combo with improving Raiders LT Jared Veldheer. With promising C Stefen Wisniewski in the middle, there is suddenly some promising blocking in front of RB Darren McFadden and new QB Matt Flynn.

11 (43) Buccaneers: Johnathan Banks, CB, Mississippi State

Analysis: The Tampa Bay secondary, which ranked dead last in 2012 and was very nearly the worst statistically in NFL history, has now added Banks, CB Darrelle Revis and S Dashon Goldson in the past six weeks. Banks could start as the nickelback for a team that suddenly appears to have serious playoff aspirations, even in such a talent-rich division. But the addition of another high-profile defensive back could reduce the possibility Ronde Barber will be back for a 17th season.

12 (44) Panthers: Kawaan Short, DT, Purdue

Analysis: Don't be surprised if the Panthers are sneaky good … and they probably need to be to save Ron Rivera's job. They're D-line suddenly looks quite stout as Short joins first-rounder Star Lotulelei between established DEs Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy. This team's pass rush should be quite formidable and will probably need to be given the questions that remain in the secondary.

13 (45) Cardinals (from Chargers): Kevin Minter, LB, Louisiana State

Analysis: Interesting choice. Arizona ILB Daryl Washington is one of the league's best young players at the position but will open the 2013 season with a four-game suspension. The Cards also signed Jasper Brinkley in free agency, so Minter will have to compete for a job, at least starting in Week 5. Minter also has to overcome a slight stigma of LSU linebackers who haven't been impact players in the pros.

14 (46) Bills (from Rams): Kiko Alonso, LB, Oregon

Analysis: A versatile player like Alonso makes sense for new Buffalo defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, who will throw a litany of looks at the opposition. And the Bills probably need to be creative and varied on defense since talent — and it exists on this roster, though not necessarily in spades at inside linebacker — hasn't gotten the franchise very far (no playoffs since 1999).

15 (47) Cowboys: Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State

Analysis: The Cowboys are lining up potential replacements for veteran TE Jason Witten after taking James Hanna in 2012. Escobar looks strong in the receiving department but may have to shore up his strength and prove he can thrive at the NFL level after getting fat against Mountain West competition.

16 (48) Steelers: Le'Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State

Analysis: The Steelers let Rashard Mendenhall go and clearly needed a bellcow since the team wants to get back to its running game roots under OC Todd Haley. Bell can suck up carries and should enjoy running between the tackles for a team that's been building a promising offensive line in recent drafts.

17 (49) Giants: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State

Analysis: Hankins is an enormous man (sometimes too large) who should be a run stuffer when the Giants aren't in their pass-rushing NASCAR package. The Giants are always true to their board, but it's worth wondering how much a player like Hankins will see the field vs. a trio of NFC East teams that tend to spread the field and/or favor option-oriented schemes. If the Eagles really manage to get a play off every 12 seconds, Hankins doesn't seem like the ideal defender to combat a fast break attack of that ilk.

18 (50) Bears: Jon Bostic, LB, Florida

Analysis: Lance Briggs has more snaps behind him than in front of him, and D.J. Williams and James Anderson look like one-year Band-Aids for a group clearly in transition. A defensive youth movement for a defense with several thirty-somethings was inevitable.

19 (51) Redskins: David Amerson, CB, N.C. State

Analysis: The 'Skins needed help at corner, and Amerson looks like a guy who will play on the outside if Josh Wilson moves to the slot in nickel situations. Washington brought DeAngelo Hall back after cutting him satisfy the salary cap, and he could find himself as a mentor for Amerson in 2013 and possibly replaced by him in 2014.

20 (52) Patriots (from Vikings): Jamie Collins, LB, Southern Miss

Analysis: New England makes its first pick after dealing out of Round 1 for boatload of choices from the Vikes. Collins projects as an edge rusher who's perfect for the Pats, who frequently toggle between 4-3 and 3-4 looks. If 2012 first-rounder Chandler Jones continues to improve and relentless Rob Ninkovich remains effective, the Patriots' recent pass rush woes could be a thing of the past.

21 (53) Bengals: Margus Hunt, DE, Southern Methodist

Analysis:

The Bengals continue stocking an already deep D-line with Hunt, an Estonian known as the "Eastern Block," given the 6-8 player's proclivity for blocking kicks. The former track and field star will be 26 this year, but Cincinnati is showing little fear adding players who can help them win now.

22 (54) Dolphins (from Colts): Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State

Analysis: Taylor is a needed addition for a secondary that lost CBs Vontae Davis (trade) and Sean Smith (free agency) over the last year. With newly-signed Brent Grimes coming back from Achilles' surgery, getting a healthy youngster was imperative for Miami GM Jeff Ireland.

23 (55) 49ers (from Packers): Vance McDonald, TE, Rice

Analysis: McDonald isn't one of the more high-profile tight ends of this draft, but he does provided needed depth. McDonald followed James Casey to Rice, who's a versatile player who's proven very effective at the NFL level.

24 (56) Ravens (from Seahawks): Arthur Brown, LB Kansas State

Analysis: The brother of Eagles RB Bryce Brown follows in his footsteps from K-State to the pros. Arthur Brown was a team captain and the best player on the Wildcats defense, and the Ravens would obviously love it if he can replicate his college resume in the pros given the talent and leadership void left in the wake of Ray Lewis' retirement.

25 (57) Texans: D.J. Swearinger, SS, South Carolina

Analysis: Looks like the Texans might roll with some three-safety looks by adding Swearinger alongside Ed Reed and Danieal Manning. Swearinger is a punishing hitter who will surely became a fast favorite of coordinator Wade Phillips in a fast-flowing defense. Wouldn't be a surprise to see Swearinger to steal some snaps from Houston's linebackers, either.

26 (58) Broncos: Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin

Analysis: The Broncos struggled to close out the Ravens in their divisional playoff loss with Willis McGahee out and Knowshon Moreno hurt. Ball is durable and will find the end zone after scoring an NCAA career record 83 TDs. One concern, he put a lot of miles on the odometer for the Badgers.

27 (59) Patriots: Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall

Analysis: It was inevitable that New England would take a wideout at some point after parting with Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd. If Dobson can at least threaten defenses deep as a rookie, he'll make TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez and WR Danny Amendola more effective in their intermediate routes. But as Chad Johnson learned, Dobson better get in that playbook early.

28 (60) Falcons: Robert Alford, CB, Southeast Louisiana

Analysis: Atlanta began the draft with Asante Samuel as its only starting-quality corner. That's changed over the past two nights after GM Thomas Dimitroff secured Desmond Trufant last night in a trade. The Falcons' recent playoff ousters have in large part been due to pass coverage struggles. Maybe that chances with the fresh DBs and DE John Abraham replaced by younger Osi Umenyiora.

29 (61) Packers (from 49ers): Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama

Analysis: Many prognosticators put Lacy with the Pack in Round 1, but GM Ted Thompson gets him a day later. Green Bay has struggled to run the ball consistently since Ryan Grant started to slide, but Lacy should change that provided his toe and hamstring don't become chronic issues. Like Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers should also benefit from getting a teammate who can milk a lead and kill a clock at the end of games.

30 (62) Seahawks (from Ravens): Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M

Analysis: Michael is a talented player but spent much of the 2012 season on the bench after crossing Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin in the discipline department. Michael won't have the luxury of skating with RBs Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin ahead of him. But if he rises to the team's internal level of competition, he should get 5-10 carries a week and might replace Lynch in the future.

Copyright © 2013 USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Co.

He should stretch the field, which should enable him to take advantage of Locker’s arm while also adding further running room for RB Chris Johnson and slot WR Kendall Wright. However, Hunter’s addition will also raise questions about the future of injury- and arrest-prone WR Kenny Britt and veteran WR Nate Washington, who’s essentially been the designated deep man since coming to Nashville in 2009.

3 (35) Eagles: Zach Ertz, TE Stanford

Analysis: The Eagles continue adding parts to an offense whose unveiling will be highly anticipated. Coach Chip Kelly has seen plenty of Ertz from their days in the Pac-12 — Ertz helped beat the Ducks in 2012 — and surely has a good idea about how he’ll deploy him along with Brent Celek, an underrated athlete himself. Could this also signal another long night for QB Geno Smith? Smith met extensively with the Eagles in the draft run-up but has now been bypassed by the team twice.

4 (36) Lions: Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State

Analysis: Interesting that the Lions continue to avoid upgrading their O-line after losing both of last season’s starting tackles. You wonder if they might choose to make a run at an unsigned free agent such as Tyson Clabo, though that would require some salary cap creativity from GM Martin Mayhew. But it’s hard to argue with the selection of Slay, who addresses another hole on the depth chart. And when you’re facing Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler and an improved Minnesota receiving corps on a regular basis, it’s probably a good idea to get a better wingman to pair with re-signed CB Chris Houston.

5 (37) Bengals (from Raiders): Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina

Analysis: One night after enlisting TE Tyler Eifert, the Bengals wisely continue adding parts around third-year QB Andy Dalton. Bernard is shifty, a good pass catcher and can return kicks — all things that starting RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis doesn’t do very well. Cincinnati’s lack of explosiveness outside of WR A.J. Green was a major reason the Texans scuttled them in the playoffs the past two seasons.

6 (38) Chargers (from Cardinals) Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame

Analysis: It took two nights and 38 picks, but the former Irish star is finally off the board … and he gets to play about as close as possible to his native Hawaii. Te’o may have to beat out either Jonas Mouton or Donald Butler, high picks in recent seasons, to grab a starting inside linebacker post. But given the Bolts’ deal up to get Te’o, you’d have to think the Notre Dame team captain has an inside track to star on a quietly effective and young unit.

7 (39) Jets: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia

Analysis: Good thing Smith stayed in New York an extra day as he was evidently the best player on the Jets’ board. He enters a crowded QB room that also includes — for now — Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Greg McElroy, Matt Simms and Tim Tebow. None of them has played for new OC Marty Mornhinweg, so they’re all starting fresh for a franchise that has gone back to Square 1. But given that Sanchez’s contract seems to lock him onto the roster for 2013, this pick seems pretty questionable.

Carradine’s arrival could also mean more four-man fronts in San Francisco — as that’s what he normally did in Tallahassee.

9 (41) Bills: Robert Woods, WR, Southern California

Analysis: Good pick. The Bills really haven’t had a strong complement to WR Stevie Johnson but now add a weapon for Kevin Kolb and/or first-round QB E.J.

Analysis: Don’t be surprised if the Panthers are sneaky good … and they probably need to be to save Ron Rivera’s job. They’re D-line suddenly looks quite stout as Short joins first-rounder Star Lotulelei between established DEs Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy. This team’s pass rush should be quite formidable and will probably need to be given the questions that remain in the secondary.

13 (45) Cardinals (from Chargers): Kevin Minter, LB, Louisiana State

Analysis: Interesting choice. Arizona ILB Daryl Washington is one of the league’s best young players at the position but will open the 2013 season with a four-game suspension. The Cards also signed Jasper Brinkley in free agency, so Minter will have to compete for a job, at least starting in Week 5. Minter also has to overcome a slight stigma of LSU linebackers who haven’t been impact players in the pros.

14 (46) Bills (from Rams): Kiko Alonso, LB, Oregon

Analysis: A versatile player like Alonso makes sense for new Buffalo defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, who will throw a litany of looks at the opposition. And the Bills probably need to be creative and varied on defense since talent — and it exists on this roster, though not necessarily in spades at inside linebacker — hasn’t gotten the franchise very far (no playoffs since 1999).

16 (48) Steelers: Le’Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State

Analysis: The Steelers let Rashard Mendenhall go and clearly needed a bellcow since the team wants to get back to its running game roots under OC Todd Haley. Bell can suck up carries and should enjoy running between the tackles for a team that’s been building a promising offensive line in recent drafts.

17 (49) Giants: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State

Analysis: Hankins is an enormous man (sometimes too large) who should be a run stuffer when the Giants aren’t in their pass-rushing NASCAR package. The Giants are always true to their board, but it’s worth wondering how much a player like Hankins will see the field vs. a trio of NFC East teams that tend to spread the field and/or favor option-oriented schemes. If the Eagles really manage to get a play off every 12 seconds, Hankins doesn’t seem like the ideal defender to combat a fast break attack of that ilk.

State

Analysis: The ‘Skins needed help at corner, and Amerson looks like a guy who will play on the outside if Josh Wilson moves to the slot in nickel situations.

Collins projects as an edge rusher who’s perfect for the Pats, who frequently toggle between 4-3 and 3-4 looks. If 2012 first-rounder Chandler Jones continues to improve and relentless Rob Ninkovich remains effective, the Patriots’ recent pass rush woes could be a thing of the past.

21 (53) Bengals: Margus Hunt, DE, Southern Methodist

Analysis:

The Bengals continue stocking an already deep D-line with Hunt, an Estonian known as the “Eastern Block,” given the 6-8 player’s proclivity for blocking kicks.

With newly-signed Brent Grimes coming back from Achilles’ surgery, getting a healthy youngster was imperative for Miami GM Jeff Ireland.

23 (55) 49ers (from Packers): Vance McDonald, TE, Rice

Analysis: McDonald isn’t one of the more high-profile tight ends of this draft, but he does provided needed depth. McDonald followed James Casey to Rice, who’s a versatile player who’s proven very effective at the NFL level.

24 (56) Ravens (from Seahawks): Arthur Brown, LB Kansas State

Analysis: The brother of Eagles RB Bryce Brown follows in his footsteps from K-State to the pros. Arthur Brown was a team captain and the best player on the Wildcats defense, and the Ravens would obviously love it if he can replicate his college resume in the pros given the talent and leadership void left in the wake of Ray Lewis’ retirement.

Wouldn’t be a surprise to see Swearinger to steal some snaps from Houston’s linebackers, either.

If Dobson can at least threaten defenses deep as a rookie, he’ll make TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez and WR Danny Amendola more effective in their intermediate routes. But as Chad Johnson learned, Dobson better get in that playbook early.

28 (60) Falcons: Robert Alford, CB, Southeast Louisiana

Analysis: Atlanta began the draft with Asante Samuel as its only starting-quality corner. That’s changed over the past two nights after GM Thomas Dimitroff secured Desmond Trufant last night in a trade. The Falcons’ recent playoff ousters have in large part been due to pass coverage struggles.

Green Bay has struggled to run the ball consistently since Ryan Grant started to slide, but Lacy should change that provided his toe and hamstring don’t become chronic issues.

Michael won’t have the luxury of skating with RBs Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin ahead of him. But if he rises to the team’s internal level of competition, he should get 5-10 carries a week and might replace Lynch in the future.

Carradine’s arrival could also mean more four-man fronts in San Francisco — as that’s what he normally did in Tallahassee.

9 (41) Bills: Robert Woods, WR, Southern California

Analysis: Watson, who hails from Manchester, England, should form a new bookend combo with improving Raiders LT Jared Veldheer. With promising C Stefen Wisniewski in the middle, there is suddenly some promising blocking in front of RB Darren McFadden and new QB Matt Flynn.

11 (43) Buccaneers: Johnathan Banks, CB, Mississippi State

Analysis: Interesting choice. Arizona ILB Daryl Washington is one of the league’s best young players at the position but will open the 2013 season with a four-game suspension. The Cards also signed Jasper Brinkley in free agency, so Minter will have to compete for a job, at least starting in Week 5. Minter also has to overcome a slight stigma of LSU linebackers who haven’t been impact players in the pros.

Bell can suck up carries and should enjoy running between the tackles for a team that’s been building a promising offensive line in recent drafts.
