Please Note: “Vic’s Picks” will be posted every Saturday that will include whatever Victor from the “Victor and Matt” show has on his mind. Whether it be a prediction, an event you must watch this weekend, linking his favorite story on the web or giving kudos to a great game or play. Here is this week’s installment of Vic’s Picks:
After being swept in the second round of the NBA playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks the Los Angeles Lakers head into the off season with many questions and uncertainties. The big one is whether or not Phil Jackson coached his last game? By all indication from Jackson himself and Lakers General Manager, Mitch Kupchak, he has. A question maybe equally as important of who will coach LA next season is what changes do you make to an aging roster? The first and most obvious one, if you watched any of the Dallas/LA series, is get a competitive bench that can spell guys like Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher. Next, unless you can make a blockbuster trade to acquire Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic, the trio of Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum still have the potential to be feared inside. This whole talk about blowing up the roster and starting fresh is silly. The Lakers only need one or two players and they will be back competing for another title. But first things first, they need a coach.
The Miami Heat did what not a lot of people expected them to do, and that was knock off the Boston Celtics in the playoffs. After the Celtics took three of four from the season series, most assumed Boston’s Big Three would just roll over Miami’s Big Three. However, when push came to shove and the wins matter the most, it was the trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh that prevailed and advanced in the playoffs. Boston looked old and tired. Unlike the Lakers, the Celtics really need a roster makeover for next year. Unless changes are made, the road to the NBA Finals will go throw either Miami or Chicago the next few years.
One thing is for sure, a series that includes MVP Derrick Rose, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade; there will not be a lack of highlight dunks and amazing shots. The series between Miami and Chicago will be filled with plenty of hype and questions. Will the Bulls continue the dominance they had over the Heat during the season? Can the Heat do what they did to Boston and win games in the playoffs? If the Bulls can control the tempo and play a half court game, they would limit the athleticism the Heat have and win the series. However, if Miami can play at a faster pace, forcing Chicago into a track meet, the Heat will advance. Make no mistake, Miami is playing outside its mind and playing with a lot of momentum. It will be a great series with each team winning on the opponent’s home court. Miami prevails and wins in seven to advance to the NBA Finals.

You may remember Doanghy resigned from the NBA in 2007 amidst a betting scandal that was being investigated by the FBI. Often times, former major league baseball player Jose Canseco and former NBA official Tim Donaghy are lumped into the same category because both men dropped major bombshells, sending shockwaves and changing the way their sports are viewed. For Canseco, it began when he announced that many elite baseball players, including himself, were taking steroids. With Donaghy it was after being investigated by the FBI for allegations that he bet on games, making calls that affected the point spread. However, the comparison of these two men stops there.
Some will say both came forward for fame and a way to promote their books, but it did take courage knowing that many would not believe them. Donaghy, unlike Canseco, came forward because he realized what he did was a mistake. As Donaghy told the Victor and Matt podcast show, “I don’t have any doubt that my image has changed since I wrote my book. People believed what I had to say. I think there is a difference between Jose Canseco and myself because I don’t think Jose feels what he did was wrong, in regards to steroids. I certainly feel what I did, getting involved in gambling and gambling on NBA games, with the position I was in was certainly wrong.”
Both men’s actions were illegal, but it seems Donaghy feels remorseful. If he could change what happened, he would without hesitation; while Canseco would probably do the same thing over and over again. The problem with society today is when someone apologizes with sincerity for a mistake made; they have to deal with a continuous ridicule that seems unnecessary. To thank both Canseco and Donaghy for bringing both actions to light would be an insult to everyone who is involved with baseball and basketball. But both games have certainly benefited. Baseball now has stronger steroid testing and harsher punishments if caught taking steroids. With basketball, officials are followed and put under a microscope, making it harder to “fix” a game.
“Life is slowly, but surely getting a little better,” Donaghy also told Victor and Matt. “I’m getting in the lives of my daughters. I’m also doing a lot of blogging, writing and radio work for a sports handicapper who advises people who to bet just like a stock broker would. I am certainly not betting on games. Never going to get involved doing that again.”
Everyday, Donaghy has to live with the guilt that what he did was wrong, but he is working on making amends. This is one time we all should be pulling for this guy.
