Vic’s Picks: March Madness, NBA, Ray Allen, Ohio State vs. Wisconsin prediction

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Please Note: “Vic’s Picks” will be posted every Saturday that will include whatever Victor from the “Victor and Matt” show has on his mind. Whether it be a prediction, an event you must watch this weekend, linking his favorite story on the web or giving kudos to a great game or play. Here is this week’s installment of Vic’s Picks:

  • Now that football is over, my mindset is college basketball, more specifically March Madness. What better way to prepare for the Big Dance than “Rivalry Week?” Each day this week showcased rivals going head to head. Started Monday with Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia, continued Wednesday with Georgetown vs. Syracuse and North Carolina Duke, moved to Ohio State at Wisconsin, and will conclude Sunday with Arizona traveling up I-10 to play Arizona State. The basketball leading up to the tournament is must-watch because “bubble teams” will try to prove they deserve to Dance. With no dominant team in college basketball this season, the next few weeks should be very interesting.
  • Still on the topic of basketball, congratulations to Boston Celtic guard Ray Allen. Allen became the NBA’s career leader in three-pointers, passing former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller. The former UConn guard broke the record in the first quarter of Thursday’s game against the Lakers. While Allen was thrilled to set the record, the Celtics blew a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter, and the two-time defending champs left Boston with a 92-86 victory.
  • Now for my much anticipated prediction for the weekend. No. 1 Ohio State travels north to Madison, Wis., to play Wisconsin. With a 24-game winning streak on the line, the Buckeyes look to extend one of its best starts in school history. However, the Badgers under Bo Ryan are nearly impossible to beat at home compiling a record of 151-11 (.932) at the Kohl Center. The last remaining undefeated team falls this week as Wisconsin wins a close one: Wisconsin 65 Ohio State 61.

Stanford’s Andrew Luck Puts NFL Dream on Hold… Smart Move

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

When elite college athletes have the challenging decision to either turn pro or return to college, most decide that a 9 AM psychology class isn’t worth the money they would be turning down. When Stanford’s quarterback Andrew Luck, and next years Heisman favorite, decided to return to The Farm for his senior season few people were surprised. With the CBA negotiations in full swing and a possible NFL lockout on the horizon, Luck will be one of the few who’s decision to return to school will not affect this draft status. As Andrew’s dad, Oliver Luck who is the athletic director at West Virginia, told the Victor and Matt show on why his son returned to Stanford, “Two factors: one being his desire to earn his degree. The second one is the respect and bond he developed with his cohort, the guys that came in with his class. They all committed to Stanford with they were 1-11 and struggling. Andrew feels real close to those guys.”

Andrew Luck

Houston Texans and USC Heisman winner Matt Leinart decided to return to school and take the infamous “dancing” class to earn his degree. What Leinart got was another year for NFL scouts to notice his flaws and in the end, his draft status fell. Fellow Pac-10 quarterback, Washington’s Jake Locker had the opportunity to be the No. 1 pick in last years draft, but decided to return to school. Locker left millions of guaranteed money on the table, and has dropped on Mel Kiper, Jr.’s big board.

Why will Luck be different than Leinart and Locker? Simple, he is the hottest prospect to come out of college since John Elway. The scouts drool over all the NFL type throws, his high IQ in the pocket, his awareness to elude the rush and his overall knowledge of the game. Another year in college will allow Luck to improve his skills and give college fans another opportunity to watch a special player. Even with the departure of Jim Harbaugh to the NFL, with any Luck, Stanford will be one of the top football teams next season and contend for not only a Pac-10 championship, but another berth in a BCS game.
