A photo tour of Old Town Tubac
by Hugh Holub on Jun. 03, 2010, under politicsTubac, Arizona is “where art and history meet”.
Founded in 1752 as the first Spanish colonial settlement in what is now Arizona, Tubac has a rich history spanning over 1,000 years. First as an ancient Indian settlement, then as a Spanish presidio, then as the headquarters for American mining exploration, and then, starting in the mid-twentieth century, as an artist colony.
Tubac is world famous as both a significant historical site and a thriving artists’ community.
Most visitors to Tubac don’t get back to the “Old Town” area where the Tubac Presidio State Park is and where most of its historical sites are located.
The “Tubac” many know is the newer portion of the town constructed after the late 1950s where are the shops are. Old Town dates back to the 1750s.
Tubac is 45 miles south of Tucson. Get off Interstate 19 at Exit 34 and drive east through the shopping area and you will discover “Old Town Tubac”.
