Recipe for making an American

by on Jul. 03, 2010, under humor, politics

american-flag-[Thought this was worth repeating for the 4th of July]

First you get a very large pot, and mix in some Brits, some French, a bunch of Irish, then add a few million Africans, stir up some Indians, then simmer.

The mixture will produce Yankees, Southerners, and about 20 various states.

Then bring to a boil, repeating the following:

“All men and women are created equal regardless of their race, creed or color.”

“Everyone has an equal right to succeed or fail, based solely on their efforts, and not because of what class or color they are.”

“Government exists to serve the people, and not vice versa.”

“One has the right to express one’s views, even if no one agrees with them.”

“Government and religion must be kept separate from each other.”

“If one works hard, they can improve their lot in life, and that of their children.”

“A free economy is the best means to prosperity.”

“Justice and fairness are the same thing.”

After the mixture cools down, add Poles, Czechs, Hungarians, Germans, Swedes, Norwegians, Turks, Lebanese, Mexicans, Brazilians, Nigerians, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Pacific Islanders, Jews, Muslims, and about 200 other varieties and spices from around the world, and mix thoroughly, keeping as much of the original flavor of each of the ingredients as possible. (Note, some of the ingredients will add themselves.)

The end result will be a very interesting experiment that constantly changes its texture, yet is unquestionably “American” no matter where it is found, no matter what color it is, and no matter what language is spoken.

I can’t believe you wouldn’t include Mexicans in your first paragraph.  Did you forget this was Mexico (all of the South-West)?  There always have been and always will be Mexican here.

  • rehenna

really now we must start with mexico first? get over it. it was added. nice article.

    AnaNymous:

Just curious how many were here when we bought the Gadsen Purchase? Your government didnt sem to care about the couple of hundred who were here at the time. There were probably 300 times more Native Americans here, Nobody asked them. The Apaches (God Bless them) cleared you guys out long before.
How about the Navajos, Hopis and Pueblo Indians among others who lived here.?
The only hispanic populations were in the Rio Grande Valley and on the coast of California.
You just forgot that a vast majority who came here got here illegally recently. Hurts doesnt it.

They were all “Mexicans” including the Indian tribes in those areas because they were inhabitants of Mexico.  You know nothing of my heritage or who my government is.  I didn’t say it should be Mexican’s first, my point is that they should be included in part of the original makeup of this country.  My Mexican ancestors lived in New Mexico & Arizona long before they were part of the U.S.  My Choctaw & Navajo ancestors were here long before they were moved to reservations by OUR government & my white ancestors came here & married non-Europeans.  It’s amazing how people ‘pre-judge’ and are so self righteous.  You are no more “American” than I am.  Nor did I or the article mention illegal immigrants but that’s what it always comes down to for you doesn’t it?  Maybe you should try not making assumptions and appreciate what dignity we have left in this country.  Happy 4th!

“All of the southwest”, and the western states (except for the two I mentioned) and southern Arizona were devoid of hispanics. They owned it on paper only.

Nice sentiments.  When is this planned to happen in reality?  Ever?

    • AnaNymous

not anytime soon judging from the comments in response to mine.  But I agree, nice sentiments.

The Native Americans who lived under Mexican rule. NEVER considered themselves as Mexican, in any way shape or form. They fought them. The Pueblos, the Apaches. Thats if they ever saw one. The Mexicans owned a lot of territory on paper but never set foot on it. In fact most of it.
I challenge you to ask any Apache if he was under Mexican rule. Pretty much all of the Native Americans who “lived” under their rule revolted and killed many. Even our local, and friendly Tohono O’odham. (The Pima Revolt) The Great Pueblo Revolt, the Quechans (at Yuma) and the great Apaches who resisted the Spanish (thats why Tucson exists) and killed Mexicans for sport. When Anglos showed up the Apaches wanted to join us as allies because they hated mexicans so much. Mexicans paid bounty money for Apache scalps.
And no I don’t care about your racial background, not a bit. I do care the 20 million people walked here from Mexico (or drove in a van) and now claim ownership. We as a nation have a right to control who comes here. ALL nations do.

Again, another prejudice rant.  We could debate all day.  Fact is, a large portion of this country is made up of what used to be Mexico.  Which would explain all of the missions and Spanish named cities & states.  It’s really sad how you assume all Mexican’s are illegal, & I’m sure the Indians loved being moved, raped, murdered and starved on their own land, the Spanish did it and so did American settlers.  Too bad they couldn’t control who came here…

Yes and the Aztecs had their chance when Cortez landed in Vera Cruz. One chance only. Montezuma’s generals told him what they should do and he was weak. The rest is history. Yes we treated the Native Americans poorly. Horrible in a lot of cases. But how many reservation with hospitals and schools are there in Mexico.?? How has the Mexican govt treated their native peoples.
Thats right “Too bad they couldnt control who came here”…story of a lot of empires and countries. The Persians lost three battles and their entire empire was lost to the Greeks. The Greeks, if they had lost a couple of battles and naval battles would have lost it all and we would be working in an Iranian burka factory today. Same for the British against the Nazis. Happens all the time.
Yes we could debate it all day. Point is…..20 million ignorant peons who are not citizens DO NOT BELONG here.

I am returning to the US after being in Canada since 1978.  I cannot begin to express how saddened I am by the wasted energy on topics that are settled by common sense in Canada.  Health Care for all – no problem, immigration – done, same sex relationships – done, solid banking system – check, tolerance, respect and time spent ENJOYING life and one another.  The amount of rancor, ill-will, misunderstandings, posturing, inflamed emotions scares and saddens me.  I wonder if and when the US and citizens will rise back up to the caring, compassionate, reasonable country who looked after ALL of its citizens – who truly cared about helping one another and including everyone in the good fortunes of the country.  I pray for that day.  Happy 4th !!!
