Does America hold children responsible for the crimes of their parents?by Hugh Holub on Dec. 26, 2010, under border issues, politics
Cochisecitizen, one of the regular commentors on this blog, had the following observation about the GOP opposition to the Dream Act:
… the other point is that most of these kids were dragged along by their parents into crossing the border illegally, when they were only 2-6 years old. If a bank robber dragged his 2 year kid along with him, do you think that kid should be sentenced to the same prison sentence as the bank robbing parent, just being being there? By denying these kids an opportunity to earn citizenship is sentencing them to the same fate as their parents – deportation, from the only country they’ve ever known, back to a country they know nothing about.
This cuts right to the heart of the issue.
Back in Merry Old England a child could be held responsible for a parent’s crime or debt, and thrown into jail along with the parent.
One of the fundamental things the American colonists sought in creating America was to get rid of a lot of really nasty English law…including holding kids responsible for the acts of their parents.
