Movement starts to create America’s 51st state…splitting Pima County off from Arizona

by on Feb. 23, 2011, under politics

Press Release February 22, 2011:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Start Our State (SOS) has been formally established as a political
committee registered in Pima County. SOS is dedicated to creating
the 51st American state in Southern Arizona, separating us from the
extremists in Phoenix. Our mission is to establish a new state in
Southern Arizona free of the un-American, unconstitutional
machinations of the Phoenix-controlled Arizona legislature and to
restore our region’s credibility as a place welcoming to others, open
to commerce, and friendly to its neighbors. Our first and immediate
goal is to place a referendum before the voters of Pima County on the
2012 ballot on the question of statehood.

We welcome other Arizona counties that wish to join this effort. In the
meantime, we shouldn’t forget that, with a population of 1,020,200
(2009), Pima County has more people than Montana, Delaware,
North Dakota, South Dakota, Alaska, Vermont, and Wyoming. With
an area of 9,189 square miles, Pima County is bigger than Vermont,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode
Island. There is legal precedent for the separation of a portion of an
existing state from the original state in order to form a new one. In
1820, Maine split off from Massachusetts and was admitted to the
Union as the 23rd state.

SOS Co-chairs: Paul Eckerstrom, Peter Hormel
SOS Treasurer: David Euchner

See  Facebook page: Save our state

Comment: The whole reason new political jurisdictions…nations and states… are created  as well as revolutions started… is to make sure folks have a say in their governments.

If the  original American Revolution was triggered by the colonial people feeling they didn’t have a say in the government from London….the movement to create Baja Arizona is another in a long history of people wanting not to have their lives run by people with very different values and agendas who live somehere else.

What is Pima County except a colony of Maricopa, where Maricopan priorities and values are being imposed on people down south simply because there are more of them than us?

I hope the SOS leaders are serious…now lets see if Santa Cruz will join the effort….doubt if Cochise or Yuma would be interested….

From the Frumious Bandersnatch:
BAJA ARIZONA–AMERICA’S 51st STATE ?

An enormous mistake was made on December 30, 1853 when the Gadsden Treaty was signed between the United States and Mexico. The northern part of the Mexican state of Sonora, an area located south of the Gila River, was purchased by the United States, and tacked into what became the State of Arizona. The people of the Gadsden Purchase have increasingly chafed under the domination of an enormous population in an around Phoenix (Maricopa County). In order to end the domination of Phoenix, the people of the Gadsden Purchase are seeking statehood. Proclaiming themselves as Baja Arizona, a “state of mind” is acknowledged to exist.

The primary differences between Baja Arizona and the remainder of Arizona are of attitude and tolerance. The people of Baja Arizona are known throughout the southwest for their enlightened view of the world. This is obviously not the case with the passaged of SB 1070 making it illegal to be an illegal in Arizona.

In Baja Arizona people fight for civil rights. In Maricopa County they are jailing immigrants.

In Baja Arizona a major issue is environmental quality. In Maricopa the major concerns are how to harrass Mexicans, and how to gut the budgets of the state university system so we don’t have too many smart people to disagree with Russell Pearce and his buddies in the State Legislature.

In Baja Arizona folks care about health. Up north they have cut off funds for organ transplants…the ultimate “death panel”.

In Baja Arizona we get taxed by Arizona…and little of that money flows back south to us.

If Baja Arizona Became a State imagine…..

The State Motto would be “mas cerveza”.

The State Song would be “Get back” by the Beatles.

The State Animal would be Wiley Coyote.

The State Minstrel is Linda Ronstadt.

Cigarettes would be taxed at the rate of $4.00 per pack to support the new state’s free health care system.

Marijuana might be made legal and taxed to run the state…giving new meaning to “high” taxes.

There would be no speed limit in Baja Arizona since no one obeys the ones posted now.

Tucson would likely be the capital, creating an economic boom as hordes of lobyyists descended on the town. That might even justify a new hotel in downtown Tucson.

Small government advocates in Baja Arizona suggest the state capitol be in an RV, which would move around from town to town every 6 weeks.

Alta Arizona would no longer have a border with Mexico. Joe Arpaio would have to get an honest job.

Baja Arizona would probably send two Democrats to the US Senate.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?

The current Arizona state legislature would have to call a special election, and the people of Alta Arizona and Baja Arizona would have to vote in favor of splitting the state. Then Congress would have to approve.

The chances of the people in Maricopa County voting to get rid of the concentration of Democrats to the south, and the people of Baja Arizona voting to sever their ties to the right-wingers to the north are excellent.

The chances in Congress are not so good.

First, there are several proto-states waiting to be created–Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, and Northern California. Baja Arizona is maybe 54th. The other three would probably send Democrats to Congress, as would Baja Arizona. There is no way the Republicans in the US House and Senate would create 4 new Democrat delegations in Congress, just like the South blocked the admission of free states before the Civil War. Like the pre-Civil War period, the only way Baja Arizona gets to be a state is if new Republican dominated states are also admitted. Texas could split into 5 states. Disneyworld could become a state… how do you think we got a North Dakota and a South Dakota, a Virginia and a West Virginia, and a North and South Carolina?

Other statehood movements:

Jefferson

Puerto Rico

Northern Virginia

Long Island

New York City

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Delmarva

Washington DC

In addition to nascent statehood movements inside the US, one finds suggestions to add Canada, Sonora and Cuba as new US states.

    Viva Baja Arizona!

    • Fraser007

At 8:44 pm on Thursday Feb 24th there were 575 comments at the Arizona Daily Star article about this. That is a record for the number of comments on any Star article. Most of them think that it is a stupid idea.
If I figure this right this is some kind of Progressive Liberal wet dream about what they really want.  Maybe they should get out of their parents basement once and a while.

      • Fraser007

11:06 and 650 comments in the Star. Mostly negative. Buffonish liberals. Cant wait for CNN to pick this up and watch us become the laughing stock of the nation.

    • Fraser007

Does that mean the official language will be spanish??

  • leftfield

    Where do I sign?

  • Frank L. Parker

Me too! What a great idea. We can create our own State when we lose then we can have our own State of losers. We’ll never have to worry about voting again.Viva Baja Az!

  • Carolyn Classen

Paul Eckerstrom is a former Chair of the Pima County Democratic Party and David Euchner is Chair (?) of the Pima County  Libertarian Party. Both are practicing attorneys, as is Peter Hormel.

    • Hugh Holub

Something I remember from my American Government class in college..a whole bunch of the Founding Fathers of the USA were lawyers.

      • Fraser007

This is a cruel junior high joke …right? You cant be serious. If you are serious then knock it off. We have enough problems as it is.

        • RH

What you worried about, even if Pima county and possibly some other southern border counties peeled off and became the 51st state your still in America its not secession to create a state, its been done all through out our nations history, you can move to Phoenix and find some happiness there or any other of the 50 some states! :-)

          • Fraser007

This is some wierd dream. I am disappointed in Hugh for promoting this immature story and in 90% of the comments here. No wonder we are the laughing stock of the cointry. First the story about the Coly ,45 Revolver being the State gun, now this. I thought it was a joke when I first read it. Now I wonder about you people. Pinch me someone this is a sick dream? Right?

            • Fraser007

Watch CNN pick this up this week. Should be fun all across the country. Proud to be from Arizona!!! LOL

            • tiponeill

              > I thought it was a joke when I first read it.
You were right – it started as a joke. Arizona Dems seem to be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. They have been beaten up so much they have moved to Fantasy Land.
It bodes poorly for our future if they spend any time and energy on this joke when we have such serious problems.
I would love to see some of this energy directed towards a boycott, and maybe a recall of a few of our elected Dems that have succumbed to trying to placate their Repub overlords.
You know something in the real world ?
Never thought I would agree with Fraser…..

  • Fraser007

Maybe the center of Tucson where all the democrats live. Leave the Northeast side and foothills and Northwest Tucson alone. Go play with yourselves.
    Sorry Hugh.

    • The Lou Show

Fraser:  YOU are in the minority.  YOU . . . go play with YOURSELF.

      • Fraser007

        You again………

In the center of town there are more democrats. On the fringe where people have more money there are more republicans.
Why dont you go hide under the skirts of your sidekick The Three Sonorans. As I was kicked off the Three Sonorans blogsite because he does not like people who give opposing views I really dont have to listen to your prattle anymore. Anyway you never gave any intelligent comments just insults like you are now. Go away.

  • RH

I like the idea, let them Phoenix teapublicans stew in their misery and let them have their little kingdom and death panels for the elderly and poor and let us become the 51st state, sounds good to me! :-)

  • KeepemHonest

This is Stupid!  I am amazed with some of the stupid ideas that people come up with.  I guess they make for some sort of entertainment to the fringe lefties… but we all know this will not happen.

    • RH

There is old corny saying about opinions they are like that unmentionable part of our anatomy we all have one we all think everyone elses stinks but our own! :-) I doubt this idea will occur, but its a fact southern arizona is predominately democrat, has the largest of the 30% Hispanic American Arizonian demographics in the state, so its concievable if put to a vote it might win since only those in the area affected would have a right to decide, not them right wingers up in Phoenix! :-)

  • Jim Bodkins

I’m in … and live on the NW side of Tucson.

  • notagain

And I’m sure the first president will be a Grijalva/Calderon ticket.
How far removed from reality can a newspaper get?

    • RH

Guess this idea is about as viable as SB 1070, repealing the US 14th amendment to the US constitution, will no doubt generate lots of debate, tit for tat innuendo and no doubt the right wingers will be crying, whining you cannot do that, we run things you run nothing in your own county! :-)

    • Anonymous

We are not trying to leave the union but rather form a new state. States don’t have presidents. Critical reading skills are really on the decline these days…

      • RH

You cannot educate the uneducated, they don’t realize or understand the difference between secession from a United States versus a creation of a state out  of a territory or state but hey let them stew in their ignorance and even though its not likely let them have some night terrors worrying about it! :-) 30% of Arizona is Hispanic American, 31% is Democrat if one looks at the map the southern end of Arizona is the predominate area of democrats & the majority of the Hispanic American communties, let them Neo-Nazi’s & Russell Pearce have Phoenix, Northern Arizona and form their little white supremacist utopia, maybe they will finally find some inner peace and happiness! :-)

  • cochisecitizen

Wait! Don’t leave me behind! I live in Cochise County, guess I’ll have to look into how to get a group going our county to join the secession – because if Pima secedes and leaves us to the jackals in Maricopa, I’m outta here!

    • RH

Do a google search on demographics of each county, Cochise county has in excess of 40% of its population as Hispanic American, all they have no idea what the break down is on democrat, republican or independents but southern arizona is where most democrats reside that is why only GOP rhinos win down here like McCain, and them looney tunes from the tea party are not doing so well! :-)

  • Wiseguy

What is Pima County except a colony of Maricopa, where Maricopan priorities and values are being imposed on people down south simply because there are more of them than us?
Isn’t creating another state the same thing? Hugh, whatever you are smoking, please pass it on.

  • tucsondon

I think there are many who would respond with the ol’ “Don’t let the door hit’cha where the good Lord Split’cha”.  Unhinged? You bet’cha!

  • MD

West Virginia also separated from Virginia
Arizona Territory was also originally part of New Mexico Territory.
Hey, if those fools up in Maricopa can pass laws “nullifying” federal laws, then Pima can pass a law “nullifying” Arizona laws.
Also, we’re totally taking the Northwest side and the Catalina Mountains.

  • goodwillhunting

As Pamela said, “Viva Baja Arizona.”  I like the idea of statehood as a long-term goal.  In the short-term, however, I suggest a focus on defining the mindset of Baja Arizona, a mindset that all of us can identify with.  What are the core beliefs of Baja Arizonans?  I hope that our answer is affirmative and inclusive, and not just contrary to the current legislative majority.  Recently when I have traveled out of state, it has been embarassing to say that I am from Arizona.  In the future, I would like to state with pride that “I am from Baja Arizona,” and explain what that means beyond geography.  Can we develop a set of 5-10 statements that describe the Baja Arizona mindset?  As a starting point, consider the following statement:  [1] Baja Arizonans celebrate human diversity.  What descriptive statement would you add?

  • Entropy

This will be much easier once Arizona seceeds from the USA as planned by the state’s current legislature. After the start of the coming state’s civil war, baja az will have the fed’s backing.

  • JoeS

Seems I recall the Democrats tried to secede once before……

    8^)

    • JoeS

And oddly enough it also had alot to do with maintaining a stream of  ”cheap labor”

      Everything old is new again….

      8^)

    • leftfield

Sigh.   I’m sure many people have been through this with you before, Joe.  It was your philosophical antecedents that waged the war of southern aggression.

      • JoeS

The southern DEMocrats  wanted to maintain their access to “cheap labor” AND increase their political clout by counting that “cheap labor” in their State populations.

Like you said,  don’t trust the DEMorcats…  8^)

As I said….what is old,  is new again…

        • leftfield

If I call a pig an eagle, can it then fly?

        • JoeS

AND…..oddly enough…. Prescott was was chosen as the first Territorial seat to keep it far away from the Confederate sympathies that were prevalent in the Tucson area….

          Rumblings to secede…indeed.

          • Jim Bodkins

Tucson had mexican sympathies – not confederate. A detachment of confederates wandered in to Tucson – and were ultimately engaged at picacho peak by californians. I think one person was killed.

You remind me a great deal of the southern democrats actually. Nasty bunch. They were right to follow Reagan.

            • JoeS

              Mr. Bodkins,

You might want to recheck your facts ….  8^)

            • Dumr Den U

Yes, AZ was only a territory during the Civil War, so no official side was taken…….Let’s chide more people for their screwed-up slants of history…….Hell yeah, you dreamers should GO BIG and just become the northernmost state of MEXICO….Surrrre, y’all be just fine…..No guns and lots of drugs…..Nahhhh, yer murder rate won’t go up….All your wonderful industry will chug right on through…..No corruption, no taxes, no tax BASE…..Just clip the cartels for 2%, you’ll be fine…..See ya’, bye, I’m leavin’……

              • JoeS

A Territory yes,   prior to 1861 it was known as the “New Mexico Territory”.    Arizona first became a territory in the CSA in 1861,   it did not become an official territory of the United States until 1863….

          • RH

Guess your lack of education on difference between secession and creation of states is a bit amusing! :-) We had one attempted secession in 1860, but many states were created since this nations foundation, to bad you were likely day dreaming of you guns when the teachers were teaching history! :-)

  • leftfield

If this does happen, I want to see very strict border controls to keep the undesirables out of our new state.  I’m talking about the northern border, or course.

In the meantime, I like the idea presented earlier about just nullifying the laws passed in Phoenix.

    • leftfield

P.S. Neighborhood sweeps will be needed also.  We need to secure our neighborhoods and weed out “illegals”.  Anyone renting to them or even riding in a car with them goes directly to jail (I would like to suggest we call the jail a “reform through labor center”).

      • Fraser007

Your little friends know all about those camps. USSR, China, Cuba. Makes you feel real good just saying it, right Leftfield.
Go ahead make another state. I have my guns.

        • leftfield

You mean you wouldn’t want to be in a camp with undocumented migrants as “camp counselors”?  If not, I guess you’ll have to make a dangerous trek through the desert hoping you don’t get picked up by the “People’s Patrol” or preyed upon by bandits.  I would be sympathetic, but, after all, you would be leaving by choice and choosing to violate the law by becoming an “illegal”.   We can’t have “illegals” breaking the law willy-nilly and sucking up our tax dollars.

        • leftfield

          I have my guns

As an older gun rights guy, I can assume you were all in support of the Black Panthers carrying weapons openly?  That made you feel very safe and very American?  Would it make you feel safer if it was mostly non-white folks carrying openly?

          • Fraser007

In this Peoples Republic of Baja I dont think you will wants private ownership of guns.

            • leftfield

Just like Oakland in the 60′s and yet today, it would be very dangerous and you might as well paint a target on your back to be non-white and carry openly.

  • songlady

This is just toooo funny,… but,  lets get’er done!

  • songlady

Wow, we could elect our very own goveror!  Who shall we nominate?

    • JoeS

      LOL

      This is like D & D for disaffected liberals  err…I mean progressives…

      Fantasy roleplay

       8^)

      • tiponeill

        >This is like D & D for disaffected liberals  err…I mean progressives
It is embarrassing. Sometimes I think Mark Evans purposely chooses tinfoilhat liberals in order to embarrass the movement.
On the other hand, when you look at the tinfoilhat conservatives he picks, maybe that is the best he can get for free :)

  • tiponeill

    >I hope the SOS leaders are serious…
Nothing about this is serious – it is political theater, and all that it does is re-enforce the stereotype of Tucson liberals as being out-of-touch whackos.
There is absolutely zero chance of Congress creating a new state to placate reverse teabaggers.

  • karyn

Southern Oregon (from south of Portland to Calif border) and Northern California  (from Redding to Oregon border) have been threatening to create their own state for years.
When I was up in Ashland, Oregon a few summers ago, there were signs everywhere saying welcome to the state of Jefferson.

    • Fraser007

Maybe thos places can convince the liberals/leftists to move to California/Oregon area. They always talk about Portland/Berkley/Seattle like its theirMecca. They sure love those places. I will help you pack.

  • dollarshort

I believe the people behind this plan are thinking way too small. Have they contacted their friends south of us to request we push the border of a new state significantly in the southern direction?
The new state could free millions from victim status, a third world economy, create a totally new political system and eliminate border challenges.

    • Hugh Holub

Actually the first time Baja came up,  someone from Flagstaff suggested 3 states..Baja covering everything south of the Gila, Alta Arizona being everything north of the Gila except Maricopa County, and then Maricopa as the third state called “Caca Arizona”…..

  • Don

This could be good news for Arizona’s budget.

The loyal union members who are state employees, and live in Pima or Santa Cruz counties, will undoubtedly give up their Arizona state jobs with glee.

Of course, Baja Arizona will hire them—but what about their pensions.  Something tells me that Arizona won’t offer retirement benefits to employees of theirs who quit, but haven’t yet qualified for retirement.

Naturally, the Tucson-area AZ state employees who aren’t retirement eligible will give up their retirement benefits, for the cause.  Baja Arizona will need them to work in the new state government.  And, after all, who needs money to pay bills when you can hate Republicans instead?

  • RH

Southern Arizona does have the majority of Arizona’s democrats, a good number of independents, a large part of the states estimated 30% American Hispanic demographics, one way to look at it is, if the 4 main border counties asked federal government for permission to form the 51st state, and a referendom on the issue was put to a vote for the affected area, and a majority wished it, then the border issue would be the issue of the new 51st state, bet we could work out the issues without needing any minute men rambo wanna-be’s or any Neo-Nazi’s or their partons them Utah Mormons or them Northern Arizona Mormons with their dreams of polygamist Utah/Arizona union! ;-) And the beauty of America one can live anywhere one wishes, don’t let the new states doors hit them right wing tails when you cross the border! :-)

  • AZ Native

I love Arizona.  Some have stated they are ashamed to say they are from Arizona.  Well, by all rights, leave.  If you want to make your own state, the more power to you.   I love Cochise County and everything about my home state of Arizona.

  • Desert Rose

This article is brought to you by the left wing of the Democratic Party.  All the complaining about making Pima County another state is utter nonsense.  Please, those of you who dislike what is going on in Phoenix, by all means leave!  We want the border fence up Sen. McCain!  We want our land back, where we can be free, not worry about running into outlaws on our own property.

    • leftfield

Please, those of you who dislike what is going on in Phoenix, by all means leave!

Here’s another idea: those of you who like what is going on in Phoenix, by all means leave Baja Arizona!

  • sdua

you people are just as sick in the head as the far right wing. get over yourself.

  • Carolyn Classen

No time to read all these comments, but logically this new state could  be called South Arizona, with  North Arizona up north, like in North Dakota/South Dakota and North Carolina/South Carolina.

    • Hugh Holub

Ran into a way far right wing site claiming Baja Arizona was a conpsiracy to join with Mexico.

      • Carolyn Classen

Dropped by Drinking Liberally tonight at The Shanty, with Co-chair Paul Eckerstrom speaking about this SOS idea.  About 30 “liberals” listened and most agreed that they didn’t want to be associated with the Arizona legislature anymore.  Michael Bryan of Drinking Liberally, and David Safier of Blog for Arizona were supportive of this idea as well.  The next step is to get the people of Pima County to vote on this in November, 2012.  The owner (Nick) of Roasted Tea & Coffee Shop in downtown Tucson (33. N. Stone) is helping Paul & his committee with this effort.

        • Fraser007

Drunk liberals with no brains. How fun is that! When they finish with their fantasy somebody wake them up.

  • JimK

May I suggest that you contact the Mexican government and offer
to buy 500 miles (cheap) of Mexican territory to incorporate into
this new state. Hopefully we can find a natural border obstruction like the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range as the border; then legalize Marijuana and make the sales of guns illegal

  • sdgman

    Ahhh, the reconquista has begun.

  • Conte

I really hope we do secede from Maricopa/Pinal county, it is a circus up north and they are the most hateful, angry people we’ve seen since Germany last century.

    I’m a moderate, but I can’t get away from Phoenix… Let’s get this thing going, I’ll sign.

  • Jonny NYC

I love it! We need more liberal small states to counter balance all of the tiny red states poisoning the Senate with 2 Corporate owned GOP senators each.

  • Chuck N

Are you people out of your minds?

  • tortex

I’ve got a better idea; why don’t you just move south of the border and be done with the USA, period?

  • messup

Hey, another “too big to fail” candidate! I say, Go for it! People in US Congress are more than willing to give States that can’t make it on their own, hand outs. Being another Wisconsin, Illinois, New Jersey, California or Pennsylvania is good. Baja whatever, will be in good company with the likes of  these failed States. Something to look forward to…I say! Pima county is just a drag on Arizona State anyways! One less basket case to carry.
