Fogg among elite Cats to hit half-century scoring mark against UCLA
by Javier Morales on Mar. 09, 2010, under Sports
With his 51 points combined against UCLA this season, Kyle Fogg joined an elite group of Wildcats that includes Sean Elliott, Salim Stoudamire, Gibert Arenas and Michael Dickerson
The list reads like a Who’s Who of top Wildcat scorers in the Lute Olson years:
Salim Stoudamire
Gilbert Arenas
Michael Dickerson
Chris Mills
Brian Williams
Sean Elliott
They have all donned NBA uniforms. They were each selected All-Americans. They combine for 10 selections to the All-Pac-10 team, each making it at least once.
They comprise an elite club since Olson became Arizona’s coach in 1983-84. These Wildcat standouts are the only ones to score at least 50 points against UCLA in the two regular-season meetings between the programs. The newest member of this club: Kyle Fogg. That’s right … Kyle Fogg. His 51 points combined against the Bruins this season marks the 10th time a UA player eclipsed the half-century mark against UCLA.
Fogg has another chance to score some points against the Bruins, Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Pac-10 Tournament at the Staples Center, but this stat only factors the two regular-season meetings.
Upon a request by TucsonCitizen.com, Richard Paige, the UA’s media relations specialist for men’s basketball, researched the stat by looking through box scores over the last quarter century in regular-season games pitting Arizona against UCLA.
The elite of the elite during the Olson years is Elliott, who combined to score the most points (61 in 1988-89) against the Bruins in the same season he broke Lew Alcindor‘s Pac-10 career scoring mark.
Stoudamire is another UCLA killer. He and Elliott are the only Arizona players to score at least 50 points against the Bruins in consecutive seasons. Elliott averaged 28 points in the four games, while Stoudamire averaged 28.3 points.
Elliott and Stoudamire are the only Cats to lead the combined scoring against the Bruins in three different seasons.
Fogg, a sophomore, has next season to match the consecutive-year feat but it’s unlikely. Stoudamire never passed up a shot he liked and Elliott was, well, Sean Elliott. Fogg does not embody the same scorer’s mentality of these two, especially in Miller’s balanced-scoring scheme.
Fogg led the Cats to a season sweep of the Bruins. Symbolic of the seasons in which a UA player scored at least 50 points in the two meetings with UCLA: The Cats amassed a 16-1 record against the Bruins.
The only time the UA lost was when Arenas scored 30 in a 79-77 overtime loss at UCLA in 2001. He had 22 against the Bruins a month previously in Arizona’s 88-63 win.
The lowest combined score to lead the Cats was Mustafa Shakur’s 29 points in 2007. That total was close to what the elite members of the 50-point club would score in one of their games against UCLA.
Here’s the list Paige compiled of Arizona’s leading scorers annually against UCLA:
