Former Gator forward Vargas on Arizona’s recruiting radar

Former Florida power forward Eloy Vargas has been offered a scholarship by 50 Division I programs, according to his junior college coach
Former Florida forward Eloy Vargas appears to be a remaining recruiting option for Arizona this spring along with Manhattan (N.Y.) Rice forward Kadeem Jack.
The UA has one more scholarship available for the 2010-11 season.
Vargas, a 6-10, 230-pound power forward at Miami-Dade Junior College, has received attention from Arizona and plenty of others, including Kentucky and almost every Big East school. The Dominican Republic native will have two years of eligibility remaining after averaging 21.1 points and 14.2 rebounds per game for Miami-Dade.
FoxSports.com college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman reported last year that Florida coach Billy Donovan “was not happy with Vargas’ work ethic and also that Vargas’ academics are suspect.”
Donovan, however, has lost more than Vargas. He has lost five scholarship players in the last two years, the most recent being sophomore forward Ray Shipman last month.
When Vargas left the Florida program last year, he seriously considered transferring to Kentucky. He opted to attend Miami-Dade instead to get his grades in order. His coach, Matt Eisele, told Rivals.com that about 50 Division I programs have offered Vargas a scholarship, but Eisele refused to list them.
Jack, 6-8, 210 pounds, will not announce his decision until April 28. He is considering Arizona, Miami, Arkansas and UConn. He recently completed a recruiting visit to Miami and still has one planned to Arkansas. He officially visited Arizona in January.
The Wildcats received the national letters of intent Wednesday from Los Angeles Westchester guard Jordin Mayes and Logan (Ill.) Junior College wing player Jesse Perry. The other member of the UA’s Class of 2010 recruiting class is Phoenix North shooting guard Daniel Bejarano, who signed a national letter of intent last November.
