The last time former Arizona Wildcats teammates Julius Holt and David Wood shared the same sideline at Arizona Stadium was in 1982, when the UA upset ASU 28-18 to start “The Streak”.
Three decades later, they will be on opposite ends of the field at Arizona Stadium when their sons compete against each other for the Division II state championship Friday. Their sons — sophomore defensive tackle Justin Holt of Salpointe Catholic and senior tight end Trevor Wood of Scottsdale Chaparral — hope to make their respective father leave the stadium with another meaningful victory.
The Lancers (13-0) and Chaparral (12-1) play at 6 p.m. Fox Sports Arizona will televise the game. Former UA offensive lineman John Fina will provide the commentary.
David Wood was a first-team All-Pac-10 defensive tackle in 1984. Trevor Wood’s uncle, Brent Wood, was an Arizona linebacker from 1983-86. His brother, Carter Wood, is a sophomore walk-on center.
Another former Wildcat, Jay Dobyns, will also be on the sidelines as a Salpointe assistant coach. He coaches the Lancers’ receivers, which include Arizona recruits Cam Denson and Kaelin Deboskie.
“Lots of nexus to the U of A,” is how Dobyns described the game to me.
Trevor Wood, who is also a defensive end for Chaparral, is following in his father’s footsteps and will attend Arizona starting next year. The 6’6″ and 238-pound prospect has 65 receptions for 862 yards with eight touchdowns, according to stats published by MaxPreps.com.
Justin Holt, 6’2″ and 270 pounds, is starting to receive plenty of recruiting literature and figures to be one of the state’s top recruiting prospects by the time he is a senior.
