Sidiki Johnson transferring to Harlem high school but not playing, only practicing

Monday, February 21st, 2011

The odyssey continues for Class of 2011 Arizona basketball recruit Sidiki Johnson, who has found a new high school to attend, but his playing days at that level are over.

NYCHoops.net reported Monday that Johnson, a 6-foot-9-inch, 220-pound, power forward, is in the process transferring to Wadleigh, a public high school in Harlem, N.Y. to complete his core courses and other high school requirements. He was dismissed from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson (Va.) for violating an undisclosed team rule, Warriors coach Steve Smith confirmed with me Sunday.

Wadleigh coach Mike Crump told NYCHoops.net that Johnson is expected to start school next Monday or Tuesday.

“He won’t be able to play on our team,” Crump said in the report. “Our playoff roster is already in but he will be able to practice with us.”

Johnson, whose letter of intent to Arizona to play basketball for coach Sean Miller remains valid, originally played with St. Raymond High School in his native Bronx, N.Y. He transferred to St. Benedict’s in New Jersey for his junior season. Before this year, Johnson transferred to Oak Hill.

Smith, who has produced the likes of Carmelo Anthony and Rajon Rondo at Oak Hill, indicated to me that he hopes Johnson’s progression to Arizona academically works out. Johnson was dismissed from the school along with senior wing player Ben McLemore, who has narrowed his choices to Kansas and Missouri.

“I hope they get into schools right away,” Smith told me.

Arizona sophomore guard Lamont “MoMo” Jones is also an Oak Hill grad.

Sidiki Johnson dismissed from Oak Hill for violating undisclosed team rule

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy coach Steve Smith confirmed this morning via text message that Arizona Class of 2011 recruit Sidiki Johnson and a teammate have been dismissed from the team for violating an undisclosed team rule.

“Yes, all I can say,” Smith texted me in response to whether Johnson and fellow senior Ben McLemore were dismissed from the team for violating a team rule.

Attempts to reach Johnson, a 6-9, 220-pound power forward who has signed with Arizona, have been unsuccessful. McLemore is a 6-5, 185-pound wing player who narrowed his college choices to Kansas and Missouri.

How their dismissal from Oak Hill’s program affects their academic standing and eligibility for college is uncertain at this time.

Arizona Wildcats recruit Sidiki Johnson no longer with Oak Hill, coach says

A USA Today story published here at TucsonCitizen.com earlier Saturday reported that Arizona recruit Sidiki Johnson is no longer with the prestigious Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill basketball program.

Oak Hill coach Steve Smith declined to comment on the situation after his team defeated Jacksonville (Fla.) Arlington Country Day 103-76 in the Presidential Hoopfest at Upper Marlboro (Md.).

The story, written by Jim Halley of USA Today, states that the Warriors played without Johnson and guard Ben McLemore. Halley writes that Smith would not comment on the two seniors other than to say they were no longer at Oak Hill.

Johnson was unavailable for comment.

“We may have been affected by that (the absence of Johnson and McLemore) … I think some of the other players wanted to prove something,” guard Nick Hornsby told Halley.

Johnson, who hails from Bronx, N.Y., is a 6-foot-9-inch, 220-pound power forward who signed a national letter of intent with Sean Miller‘s program last November. He missed most of this season with a hairline stress fracture in his left foot.

He is one of three players who has signed with Arizona. Henderson (Nev.) Findlay guard Nick Johnson and Winston-Salem (N.C.) Quality Education Academy guard Josiah Turner have also signed with the Wildcats.

San Diego Hoover High School post player Angelo Chol became the fourth member of Arizona’s Class of 2011 with his much-publicized verbal commitment Thursday.

Sidiki Johnson’s athletic and academic future at the high school level is uncertain at this time with his departure from Oak Hill. Turner was dismissed from the Sacramento High School team last month after missing games and practices while deciding his future at the school. Turner transferred QEA to concentrate on his academics and play basketball for the Fighting Pharaohs.

Sidiki Johnson has a long-standing affiliation with Arizona, with his verbal commitment to Miller and assistant Book Richardson in August 2009. Richardson, a Queens, N.Y., native, was also instrumental in attracting current Wildcats Lamont “MoMo” Jones from Harlem and Kevin Parrom, who like Sidiki Johnson is from the Bronx.

“Book and I have a good relationship,” Sidiki Johnson said at the time of his commitment. “It means a lot knowing that when I get out there, he’ll be there to help me out.”
