He actually died of an enlarged heart and had had a tear in his heart. I was among the people that were at the picnic as well as the hospital. It was a devestating day and will never forget it–or Young Thompson.

Thompson died in Tucson in May 2008 of an apparent heart attack. From a Greg Hansen article in the Daily Star: After starting at defensive tackle for the Arizona Wildcats in 2001-02, four-year letterman Young Thompson had a tryout with the San Francisco 49ers, earned a degree in history and worked locally in several capacities as a teacher and counselor. He subsequently became the custodian for the Eastside Assembly of God and moved his mother, Pepe Young, from American Samoa to Tucson so he could take care of her. While participating in a church outing on Memorial Day — a picnic and a softball game — Thompson collapsed and lost consciousness while attempting to catch a pop-up. He died before paramedics arrived at Charles Ford/Lakeside Park. He was 28. "In the last year or so, Young's life had taken such a positive turn and had such good potential,'' said Peter Kraft, pastor for the Eastside Assembly of God. "He had recently taken and passed his tests to work in the law enforcement field, and was not only taking care of his mother but also a 12-year-old niece. It's very, very sad. Just devastating.''

Oregon and Washington might not have a connection but Oregon State definately does. Their family atmosphere is top notch and is a direct result of what these kids are all about.
