‘Life’s not fair:’ Parrom breaks foot, is out for the season

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

UPDATE, 10:54 p.m.: Kevin Parrom tweets: “I love all u guys thanks 4 all of ya support. Ill be ok. Just like mommy said Just another bump on the road. Ill be back stronger than ever!”

Basketball has been Kevin Parrom’s refuge. His safe place. The time when he can forgot about everything else that has happened in the last several months.

And now he won’t have that.

The Arizona Wildcats junior forward suffered a broken bone in his right foot in the first half of Saturday’s game against Washington. Surgery is needed. With nine regular-season games left, his season is over.

“Life’s not fair sometimes,” coach Sean Miller said after the loss, not yet knowing the extent of the injury. “From his perspective, it would be nice if he could just catch a break.”

Cornerback from Philadelphia changes mind, ditches Pitt for Arizona

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

The Arizona Wildcats have picked up their second player who was once committed to Pittsburgh, as three-star cornerback William Parks committed on his official visit Saturday.

Parks, from Philadelphia’s Germantown Friends School, tweeted the news of his commitment.

Parks, who committed to the Panthers last summer, decided to look around again when coach Todd Graham left in December for Arizona State.

The Wildcats already had a good scouting report on and relationship with Parks, considering three former Pitt assistants — including defensive backs coach Tony Gibson — are now at Arizona working for head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Parks is rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports, which ranks him as the 31st-best player in Pennsylvania.

Arizona has been adding tall defensive backs lately — including 6-2 Leo Thomas from San Antonio and 6-4 Yamen Sanders from Culver City, Calif. — and Parks fits the mode. He is listed at 6-3, 180.

Earlier this month, outside linebacker Dakota Conwell committed to Arizona after backing out of his pledge to Pittsburgh.

Arizona-Washington game blog

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

Well … the TucsonCitizen.com site was down for about four hours, so the rest of the game blog never happened, although the game did. I’ll have posts on Washington’s 69-67 victory later on the site.

* * *

Here we go … A little shoving after Kevin Parrom gets fouled hard by Austin Seferian-Jenkins while driving to the rim. Seferian-Jenkins is a studly football tight end for the Huskies who joined the hoops team recently and is helping on the glass. Imagine if Rob Gronkowski had played football for the Cats.

* * *

A fast-paced start to the game, with Washington having the better of it, leading 14-7 with 15:04 to go in the first half. If turnovers was one of the keys — and it was, of course — than Arizona is flunking the early test, having committed four. Too careless; perhaps a little too amped up.

* * *

The students in the Zona Zoo section in the lower bowl of McKale Center wore red T-shirts in the pregame, a stark contrast to the rest of arena. While the lights dimmed and an intro video played on the scoreboard, the students switched to white T-shirts to complete the effect.

* * *

The pregame video at McKale showed highlights of last year’s White Out win over Washington. The place went nuts. Loudest I’ve heard it (at least in a long, long time) in the pregame.

* * *

One of the most anticipated games of the season has arrived. The Zona Zoo student section, about 90 minutes before tip-off, was nearly full. ESPN GameDay — after telecasting two hours from McKale Center this morning — is in the house for more pre-game coverage.

It’s Arizona-Washington — the White Out at McKale.

This will be our spot for in-game updates and analysis, and here are a few things to watch as we get warmed-up:

1. Washington’s Tony Wroten
He was one of the most touted incoming Pac-12 recruits — Arizona’s Josiah Turner was right there, too, although Wroten has gotten the better of it. Wroten can freelance along the perimeter and finish with a flourish at the rim. He is averaging 17.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

ESPN’s Jay Bilas talked about Wroten when he met with the local media Friday.

“Last year in high school, I thought he was the best passer,” Bilas said.

“He can get to the bucket any time he wants. Really good with the ball. Terrific athlete. Long. He’s got a lot of ability. He’s a tremendous passes, but I think a lot of times the easy play is what he needs to make more often. He can hit the home run. Can he hit a double? Can he hit a single?”

Don’t worry about Wroten from beyond the arc, but he relentlessly gets inside and attacks. Sounds like a defensive job for Kyle Fogg.

2. Rebounding
Washington is very good in this area because it attacks the glass on both ends of the court and has its usual athleticism and length. Junior 7-footer Aziz N’Diaye leads the way with an average of 8.1 rebounds per game, but this is usually a team effort.

Arizona’s Kevin Parrom becomes even more important than he usually is because UA needs his size to help with the short frontcourt of Jesse Perry and Solomon Hill.

3. Atmosphere
The combination of ESPN GameDay being here for a nationally televised game, the White Out and an opponent that wants to run with the Cats will make this game electric. The White Out last season was visually stunning, and this should be no different.

“The White Out last year was the single biggest homecourt advantage I have ever experienced,” Arizona coach Sean Miller said.

It’s hard to quantify, but he says Arizona’s homecourt edge is worth at least a few points. Today, that could be more.

Prediction
Washington is more talented, but gotta go with the home team — which is coming off a confidence-building performance vs. Washington State — to turn in an inspired effort. The home team has won nine in a row in the series, so that seems to count for something.

I wouldn’t expect Arizona to drain 15 3-pointers like it did vs. WSU, but the Cats will hit just enough to complement its defense … winning 72-70.

And this is always worth another look:

Juron Criner improves draft rating after Senior Bowl practices

Former Arizona Wildcats receiver Juron Criner boosted his draft stock during the week of Senior Bowl practices — not just for making the kind of difficult catches UA fans fondly recall but for quieting some of chatter about him off the field.

“I was impressed by Criner,” said NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst Rob Rang.

“I thought he had a heck of an opportunity here, and I never saw him drop a ball. I saw him make some spectacular plays. I don’t know if I would say he was the best receiver there, but he would definitely be in the conversation.”

Criner’s draft stock took a hit in the preseason when a report surfaced in the summer that his 2011 season was in jeopardy for “undisclosed medical reasons.” That the UA didn’t immediately comment made it all the more mysterious.

Sean Miller

Pointed in the right direction? Sean Miller sees reasons for optimism. Photo by Chris Morrison-US PRESSWIRE

Arizona Wildcats coach Sean Miller, after a home loss to Oregon on Jan. 14, used his press conference opportunities to alternately blast his team’s effort and carelessness with the ball.

Neither has been a problem since then. Imagine that.

In the past three games, Arizona has played with passion and as if ball security were as precious as playing time. The Wildcats are coming off perhaps their most well-rounded game of the season Thursday night, an 85-61 victory over Washington State.

The Cats have won two of the past three games, with the loss at Colorado being avoidable if they had been merely awful from 3-point range rather than a horrific 3 of 20.

Hold the applause — considering the level of competition hasn’t been stellar — but the trends are moving in the right direction for Arizona, which is 14-7 overall and 5-3 in the Pac-12 heading into Saturday’s spotlight game against Washington.

Arizona recruiting notes: Cats add a tight end from Hawaii

Friday, January 27th, 2012

One of the benefits of new Arizona Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez re-hiring offensive line coach Robert Anae was the continuation of recruiting ties to the islands.

Anae, who has deep ties to the Hawaii and the Polynesian community, helped secure the commitment this week of tight end Keoni Bush-Loo from Honolulu’s Kamehameha school.

Bush-Loo took an official visit to Arizona last weekend, and had been set to visit Nebraska this weekend before his commitment.

Bush-Loo (6-4, 240) is rated a two-star recruit by Scout.com, Rivals.com and 247sports.com. He also took an official visit to Idaho and had a scholarship offer from Washington, among others.

Arizona quarterback Nick Foles at the Senior Bowl: Lukewarm reviews

Nick Foles

The reviews of former Arizona Wildcats quarterback Nick Foles at the Senior Bowl practices were mixed at best.

I’ve waded through various reports and tweets and interviews from the hundreds of media, draft analysts and scouts who were there in Mobile, Ala., and then I called Rob Rang from NFLDraftScout.com for his view.

“Basically, he’s what I thought he was,” Rang said Thursday, on his way home from Mobile.

“I will give him some credit. I thought he threw the ball better deep than he had the opportunity to do at Arizona. In that regard, he helped himself in terms of my personal grade.

“But I still have some of the same concerns I had before. For a big athlete, he doesn’t move his feet that well. Can be sluggish. In today’s NFL, they’re asking quarterbacks to move so much more. So that is definitely a concern.”

Arizona-Washington State game blog: Hot-shooting Cats rout Cougars

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Arizona finishes off its most complete game of the season, beating Washington State 85-61 at McKale Center.

Say this: When Arizona gets hot from behind the arc, it gets really hot.

Three-point shooting was one of the big storylines, especially after the Cats were a miserable 3 of 20 in their last game at Colorado. This time, UA was a sizzling 15 of 26 from 3-point range, making the fifth time this season it has hit at least a dozen shots from distance.

Kyle Fogg was 4 of 6, all of that coming in the first half. Brendon Lavender connected on 4 of 5 from 3-point distance. Even walk-on Max Wiepking contributed a trey in the final minute. His shot gave the Cats a season-high for 3-point makes.

* * *

Brendon Lavender cleaning up again from behind the arc, making 4 of 5 3-point attempts as Arizona pours it on. The Cats are up 79-51 with 4:22 to go, having drained 13 of 22 3-pointers.

* * *

Does Arizona have a reputation for being chippy? Two weeks ago, C Kyryl Natyazhko was ejected for coming off the bench during a skirmish against Oregon State. Last week, Solomon Hill was tossed for a flagrant foul when he threw an elbow into the back of a Utah player’s head. And, tonight, Josiah Turner picks up two technicals.

* * *

Point guard Josiah Turner had to leave the court with 10:06 to play after picking up his second technical foul in a span of 66 seconds. The first was part of a double technical with WSU forward Brock Motum. The second came when Turner shoved Motum in the lane after a WSU basket.

Rutgers’ late coaching change could benefit Arizona’s recruiting

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Devin Fuller player in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl after last season.

The Arizona Wildcats’ pursuit of quarterback Devin Fuller became more interesting with the news Thursday that Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano is leaving for the NFL.

The Scarlet Knights have been considered the favorites to land Fuller, who is from Old Tappan, N.J. But new UA coach Rich Rodriguez stayed in the hunt and recently convinced Fuller to take a trip to Arizona for the last of his five official recruiting visits, which he wrapped up Wednesday.

Former Arizona Wildcats quarterback lands local high school coaching job

Kris Heavner

Former Arizona Wildcats quarterback and graduate assistant Kris Heavner will be the new head football coach at Santa Rita High School.

Heavner, 27, was one of seven applicants for the job to replace Harold Coleman, who resigned in November after going 6-13 in two seasons.

“He knows football instantly,” Michael Beck, Santa Rita’s assistant principal for athletics, said about Heavner.

“He had the best knowledge of football that we saw from any of the candidates. And he has an outstanding personality and a willingness to commit to be a Santa Rita Eagle, to make our program the state playoff team we were three years ago.
