The NBA draft lottery was held Tuesday night, spawning a fresh round of mock drafts.

Arizona wing Solomon Hill and power forward Grant Jerrett just got done participating in last week’s NBA Draft combine, so scouts and media were able to get a good look at each and further evaluate their skills.

Hill, all along, has been considered second-round material, and the new mock drafts reflect a holding pattern.

Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com moved Hill up four spots to No. 52, going to Minnesota. Wrote Goodman: “Big-time athlete who could become a defensive stopper. Has really improved his perimeter shot.”

DraftExpress.com pegs Hill at No. 56 to Detroit.

It’s with Jerrett that things are more up in the air. His curious decision to leave after his freshman season had some wondering if he would be drafted at all.

“Initially, I was surprised,” Arizona coach Sean Miller said of Jarrett’s decision to leave.

“But that’s all part of it when you recruit a very talented young player. … I think from Grant’s perspective, he felt he was ready and he was willing to make that climb to become an NBA player. I have no doubt he has the talent to do it.

“Over the last month, I have received so many calls about him. My goal now is to help him become the highest pick he can possibly become in the NBA Draft.”

Jerrett, as a 6-10 forward, has one marketable skill right now — his jump shooting and ability to stretch the floor on offense. He will need time to develop strength and moves closer to the basket against NBA big men.

With more time at Arizona, it would be easy to see Jerrett not only being a first-rounder, but a potential lottery pick.

“The one thing Grant has to his advantage is he has a true position in the NBA,” Miller said.

“He can play the 4. He’s very skilled. He’s long. He’s not a small guy at all. His best basketball is ahead of him, for sure.”

There’s too much raw skill there for Jerrett to slide all the way out of the draft. As for the most recent projections, Goodman has Jerrett at No. 44 overall, while DratfExpress.com puts him at No. 58 — just two spots away from the last pick.

So, Arizona Wildcats freshman post player Grant Jerrett is going pro after one season.

There were plenty of reports Wednesday night that the decision had been made, and the school made it official with an announcement at about 9:30 p.m.

“I would like to thank all Wildcat fans, my teammates and coaches for making my year in Tucson an incredible experience,” Jerrett said in a release. “I will forever be an Arizona Wildcat.”

This follows a few days of speculation that Jerrett was, surprisingly, going to do just this — throw his name into the NBA Draft, even though he’s not considered first-round stock (at this point) and isn’t even a lock to be drafted.

He has loads of upside — and the NBA sure loves itself a load of upside — as a 6-10 forward with a huge wingspan and a nice 3-point shot.

But it was clear that he lacked appropriate strength as a college freshman, and it’s nearly impossible to see him guarding anybody in the NBA as 20-year-old.

Said UA coach Sean Miller: “I would like to wish Grant well as he pursues his goal of becoming a part of the NBA. “Not only is Grant a talented player, but he is an even better person with a wonderful and supportive family. I look forward to helping him in any way that I can as he moves forward in his basketball career.”

Jerrett averaged 5.2 points and 3.6 rebounds last season in 17.8 minutes per game, also shooting 40.5 percent from 3-point range (32 of 79). Those aren’t the type of numbers from your usual one-and-done college player … but we might have to wait a few years to determine the wisdom of Jerrett’s decision.

(My prediction: Jerrett will go in the second round, but he’ll have to go a team that can be patient.)

Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com reported that Jerrett is likely to sign with agent Brian Dyke of Shibumi Sports. Dyke is the husband of Cynthia Cooper, who is the sister of Eric Cooper Sr., who was Jerrett’s high school school at La Verne (Calif.) Lutheran. That circle could make you wonder about what kind of advice Jerrett was getting.

Related to that, Eric Cooper Jr., a guard, de-committed from Arizona earlier this week.

As for Arizona, the Wildcats have enough depth in the frontcourt to absorb Jerrett’s loss, except for this — none of the team’s five post players can replicate Jerrett’s 3-point accuracy. It will still be a season of high expectations for the Cats, but 3-point shooting will linger now as an even bigger preseason question.

Unless Miller does something about it.

While Jerrett departs, five-star freshman forward Aaron Gordon officially signed his letter-of-intent on Wednesday, which means Arizona has 11 players on scholarship, two under the limit.

The Cats will have only one senior next season — Jordin Mayes — so they have, as of now, three scholarships for the Class of 2014, in which point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright is already committed. Miller and his staff are hot on the trail of other five-star prospects, and UA wants to keep its scholarships available to sign them.

In the short term, though, Miller could try to bring in a one-year graduate transfer as he did last season with point guard Mark Lyons. If there are any such hot-shooting wings out there, that would be a good answer for Arizona for 2013-14, while not using that scholarship beyond next season.

Here is how Arizona’s roster looks right now:

C — Kaleb Tarczewski
PF/C — Angelo Chol, Matt Korcheck
PF/SF — Brandon Ashley, Aaron Gordon
SF — Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
SG — Nick Johnson, Gabe York, Elliott Pitts
PG — T.J. McConnell, Jordin Mayes (also a shooting guard)

That’s still the best team in the Pac-12.

Jerrett’s departure seems to hurt more for the 2014-15 season. Could Tarczewski, Ashley and Gordon all leave after next season, forcing Miller to reload again? Stranger things have happened.

After all, Jerrett just turned pro.

Amid rumors today that Arizona freshman forward Grant Jerrett is considering entering the NBA Draft, one of his former high school teammates has backed out of his commitment to the Wildcats.

Guard Eric Cooper Jr. — who played at La Verne (Calif.) Lutheran High with Jerrett — said he will reconsider his options as he prepares to play at a prep school next season.

Cooper and Jerrett committed to Arizona in November 2010. Cooper was supposed to be a member of the 2013 class, but reclassified to the 2014 class with his decision to attend Brewster Academy in New Hampshire next season.

“I wanted to see what’s out there,” Cooper told the Gazette Newspapers of Long Beach, Calif. “I still love Arizona and everything about it.”

Cooper’s father is Eric Cooper, a former Arizona basketball player. The elder Cooper coached his son and Jerrett in high school at Lutheran; the Coopers were at Long Beach St. Anthony this season.

As for Jerrett, it is surprising news that he would be considering a jump to the NBA after a freshman season in which he averaged 5.2 points and 3.6 points rebounds. The 6-10 forward was one of the team’s best 3-point shooters, especially late in the season, hitting 32 of 79 attempts (40.5 percent).

Jerrett, like fellow freshman big men Brandon Ashley and Kaleb Tarczewski, has loads of upside but isn’t generally considered to be first-round material at this point.

Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star quoted Jerrett’s travel-ball coach, Dinos Trigonis, as saying Jerrett was considering a jump to the pros but “it wasn’t a definitely done deal, either.” Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com quoted Cooper Sr. as saying, “Grant has no intention of going in the draft at this time.”

The key words being “at this time.”

The deadline to declare for the NBA Draft is April 28.

LOS ANGELES — This is the way it ends. This is the way it always ends when you’re not cutting down the nets. In a quiet locker room, elbows on your knees, hands on your head, eyes becoming red.

The end hit the Arizona Wildcats suddenly on Thursday night, with a 3-point shot like a dagger from Ohio State’s LaQuinton Ross with 2.1 seconds left. From 11 points up, to 10 points down, to a tie game on the final possession … to heartbreak.

And so Grant Jerrett sat in the Los Angeles Kings locker room at Staples Center, white towel covering his face, hands on his head, struck by the finality of a 73-70 loss to Ohio State in the Sweet 16. Fellow freshman post player Kaleb Tarczewski spoke to Jerrett’s right. The team’s other freshman post, Brandon Ashley, conducted interviews to his left.

For nearly 20 minutes, Jerrett barely moved. How many times he must have replayed the final, fateful play.

“No one died,” he said, when he finally lifted the towel and spoke to reporters for a couple of minutes, “but when you play basketball and you really love it, it hurts a lot.”

Ohio State’s Aaron Craft, who pulled up for the game-winning 3-point shot against Iowa State on Sunday, had the ball, alone up top, after Mark Lyons had tied the game at 70 with a three-point play with 21.8 seconds left. Nick Johnson was guarding Craft, looking around for screens, seconds ticking away.

With about six seconds left, Craft made a move, dribbling to his right. Ross, guarded by Jerrett, set a screen. Kind of. And that’s when the defensive breakdown happened.

To that point, Arizona had been switching on every screen.

“I felt he didn’t really set the screen,” Johnson said. “He set a lousy, little screen. I felt like I got over it pretty easily.”

Jarrett made an initial move to switch to Craft as Ross rolled off the screen (non-screen) into open space behind the 3-point arc on the left side of the court. Craft whipped a pass back to him and Jarrett couldn’t recover, even fully extended as Ross rose and released and splashed the ball through the net. Jarrett’s body went limp as the game-winner found a home.

“Honestly,” Jarrett said, “I’ll take the blame for it.”

The communication error helped Ohio State end a thrilling tug-of-war between two college basketball powers exchanging haymakers for 40 minutes. The Wildcats, looking every inch of a Final Four team, surged to a 33-22 lead, before going scoreless for 7 minutes, 23 seconds spanning halftime.

Ohio State led by 53-43 with 11:02 left after a 31-10 run.

“They came out in the second half and smacked us right in the face,” said Arizona senior Kevin Parrom said. “We responded kind late and that’s the game.”

It would have been had Solomon Hill not played with the ferocity of a senior not wanting to see his career end — he scored nine consecutive points for the Wildcats in the second half — and if Lyons hadn’t been clutch. He scored seven points in the final 80 seconds.

It was all prelude to another shining moment for Ohio State, the Ross Shot that followed the Craft Shot against Iowa State.

“Players make big plays. Teams make big plays,” Arizona coach Sean Miller said.

“The pressure of the moment, the Sweet 16, going to the Elite Eight, two guys go on one. Whether he made the shot or not, I think we all live with it when it’s challenged and we do what we’re supposed to do. But part of the reason he had such a great look at the end, there were two guys who went with the ball.”

Arizona ends at 27-8, so close to a game against ninth-seeded Wichita State with a spot in the Final Four on the line. The Wildcats, who rose to No. 3 in the polls with a 14-0 start before scuffling through part of the conference play, were playing their best at the end of the season.

That’s what you want, right? It was a 50-50 game against Ohio State, neither team perfect, but each able to think that it should leave the arena victorious. In defeat, Miller’s message to the team was this: Hold your heads high.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our team,” Miller said. “I leave this season with no regrets.”

But the Wildcats do leave. This is the way it ends.

Arizona Wildcats freshman post player Grant Jerrett is likely to play Thursday vs. Ohio State, according to a update Sunday from the university.

Jerrett fell on his right elbow early in Saturday’s NCAA Tournament game against Harvard in Salt Lake City and did not return, saying afterward he thought he could have played, if necessary. UA won 74-51.

Jerrett said after the game he did not consider the injury serious, and X-rays taken after the team’s return to Tucson came back negative.

According to a statement from UA, trainer Justin Kokoskie “is confident that Grant will regain full strength and sensation over the next 24 hours and should be ready to play Thursday vs. Ohio State.”

Arizona will take on the Buckeyes in a Sweet 16 game from Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Jerrett is averaging 5.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game, part of what has been a three-man post rotation of late. He’s one of the team’s best 3-point shooters, hitting 40.3 percent (31 of 77). He has made 50 percent of his shots (15 of 30) from behind the arc in the past 12 games.

SALT LAKE CITY — Arizona freshman post player Grant Jerrett says he’ll back at practice Monday after playing only 47 seconds in the Wildcats’ 74-51 win over Harvard in the NCAA Tournament’s third round Saturday.

Jerrett took a hard fall after he was undercut while going up for a layup, crashing on his right elbow. Trainer Justin Kokoskie rushed onto the court to attend to Jerrett, taking him back to the locker room for further examination with 14:37 to go in the first half.

“My arm just started to spasm out,” Jerrett said.

Jerrett returned to the sideline in the first half with ice on the elbow, and the injury won’t require X-rays he said. He did not warm-up before the second half and had his elbow wrapped as he sat on the bench. Jerrett said he could have played if it has been a necessity.

“Didn’t feel like I needed to rush it,” he said.

He did not hit his head on the court, however.

“That’s what everyone thought,” he said.

Jerrett had ice on the elbow again after the game because of swelling, which he said was going down.

“Be back on Monday,” he said.

Jerrett is averaging 5.3 points and 3.6 minutes in 18.2 minutes per game. He has been one of Arizona’s top 3-point threats, especially lately, hitting 40.3 percent (31 of 77) on the season. He entered the NCAA Tournament having made 15 of 29 3-pointers (51.7 percent) in the past 10 games.

Arizona Wildcats coach Sean Miller was going to live and die with Mark Lyons at point guard this season.

Miller has done a bit of both.

Lyons isn’t really a point guard, but he’s playing one for the Wildcats, so he has to be judged by point guard standards.

In two losses against UCLA, including Saturday night’s 74-69 loss in Pauley Pavilion, this is Lyons’ line: 11 of 32 shooting (3 of 12 from 3-point range), 29 points, 10 turnovers and one little assist.

UCLA point guard Larry Drew II, meanwhile, had 18 assists and six turnovers against Arizona, also scoring 21 points.

“Larry Drew was too much for us,” Miller said on his postgame radio show on 1290-AM.

“When he scores, it adds a different dimension to their team. He had his usual nine assists. His four turnovers are high, but I thought he was in control of the game from start to finish. They feed off of him.”

When the Cats got the ball back with 24.7 seconds left down three points, Lyons walked up the ball up court without much urgency, dribbled up top looking for an opening before eventually spinning into the lane and put up a contested jumper that missed. UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws for the final margin.

Arizona needed a quick two-point shot, followed by a foul of UCLA. Or it needed to try a tying 3-pointer.

It got neither.

The Wildcats are better off because Lyons transferred from Xavier as a one-and-done graduate student, providing a bridge to Duquesne transfer T.J. McConnell, who becomes eligible next season as a junior. Really, what are Arizona’s other options?

But Lyons is no floor general — and that becomes more painful to watch when he’s matched up against a talented, true point guard.

Miller said he would vote for Drew as the Pac-12 player of the year if UCLA won the conference. And consider what he said about USC’s point guard after the Trojans beat Arizona on Wednesday night: “Jio Fontan dominated the game from the point guard position.”

Drew and Fontan combined for 18 assists, which also might say something about Lyons’ defense.

On Saturday night, the ESPN cameras caught Lyons jawing with Drew, but Drew got the last word … unless we get a rematch in the Pac-12 tournament.

* * *

The last thing the Arizona Wildcats want to do is compare their losses, but Miller wasn’t sounding nearly as frustrated after losing at UCLA as he was three nights earlier at USC, when it allowed the Trojans to shoot 61.1 percent.

“You can be discouraged losing two in a row,” Miller said. “I’m more discouraged by the way we lost at USC than I am here. You don’t have the same feeling as we did in the last game.”

* * *

It all goes back to defense: Arizona hasn’t lost this season when holding an opponent below 70 points.

The defense was better than it was against USC, but allowing UCLA to shoot 46.8 percent won’t keep Miller from being grumpy about that part of the game.

“Our defense once again is not able to answer the bell,” Miller said. “We’re not a good enough defensive team to win on the road like this.”

In its six losses, Arizona has allowed opponents to shoot 51.8 percent.

* * *

Freshman Grant Jerrett scored 14 points, hitting 4 of 5 3-point shots, to lead the Wildcats in scoring for the first time. He nailed back-to-back 3-pointers with 1:35 left and 1:10 to go to bring Arizona within three points.

“A lot of poise for a freshman,” Miller said. “He’s been showing it and showing it. He did a great job.”

Another contributor off the bench — and this was an even greater surprise — was backup point guard Jordin Mayes. Recently demoted in the rotation behind Gabe York, Mayes played with previously missing confidence, scoring eight points.

He had scored only seven in the previous seven games.

“It couldn’t happen at a better time for us,” Miller said. “We need firepower off the bench.”

Arizona freshman big man Grant Jerrett, who is sitting out tonight’s game against Stanford because of foot pain, should be able to play Sunday at home against Cal, coach Sean Miller said.

Miller addressed Jerrett’s status in his pregame radio interview on 1290-AM.

Jerrett has been experiencing slight pain in his left foot, and he had the foot in a walking boot and missed practice earlier this week as a precaution. Miller on Tuesday figured Jerrett would be able to play, but he said the team decided Wednesday to hold him out.

“It’s almost like a concussion, where you want to go overboard,” Miller said of erring of the side of caution.

Miller reiterated that he doesn’t expect this will be a serious issue, expressing confidence that more rest would allow Jerrett to play Sunday.

Jerrett is averaging 4.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 18.4 minutes per game as the team’s top reserve in the post.

There comes a time in every season when freshmen stop being freshmen, and Arizona coach Sean Miller says his young ‘uns have reached the tipping point.

He talked to his freshman quartet about that on the Washington road trip as the Wildcats swept the two games for the first time since 2006.

“All that experience will start to benefit us, and the biggest reason is they’re the greatest kids in the world and they work so hard,” Miller said Saturday night on his postgame radio show on 1290-AM after a 79-65 victory over Washington State.

“It’s just a matter of time as they continue to get better.”

Center Kaleb Tarczewski (6.2 points, 5.8 rebounds per game) is in his best stretch of the season. He has scored 10 points — matching his career high — in three consecutive games.

“The team is doing a great job of getting me the ball in positions I can score,” Tarczewski said in a postgame interview with 1290-AM’s Matt Muehlebach.

“Coach has been calling a few plays to get me the ball down low, and I’m trying to capitalize on that unselfishness by the rest of the team.”

Also encouraging is that Tarczewski made 10 of 11 free throws on the road trip. He has been the weak link on the best free-throw shooting team in the Pac-12 (75.8 percent) but has pulled his number up to 60.7 percent.

“He’s shooting free throws now like he’s capable of, like we have seen him do so many times in practice,” Miller said.

Power forward Brandon Ashley is the leading scorer among the four freshmen, averaging 7.9 points and matching Tarczewski with 5.8 rebounds per game. Ashley is shooting a team-best 54.4 percent and showed a nice mid-range game against Washington State.

He also has hit 3 of 3 3-pointers, but the long-range shooter among the big men is Grant Jerrett, who has made 16 of 47 shots (34.0 percent) from behind the arc. He hasn’t been as comfortable as Ashley in other parts of the game, though, although his length and athleticism is making him a formidable shot blocker.

Jerrett swatted six shots at Oregon State on Jan. 12 and had four blocks at Washington State. He also had five rebounds as he played a career-high 28 minutes Saturday night, taking advantage of team-wide foul trouble and Kevin Parrom’s ejection.

“It’s just a matter of time before Grant establishes himself,” Miller said.

And guard Gabe York has elbowed his way into the discussion, getting a handful of minutes in each of the past three games. He hit a 1 of 3 3-pointers vs. the Cougars.

Individually, none is a immediate superstar but they combine to average 22.9 points and 16.0 rebounds per game and — this is critical — they haven’t been headache-inducing problems.

Contrast that to last season, with eventually-booted point guard Josiah Turner and big man Sidiki Johnson, who bailed after less than a semester. Turner is on his third pro team already and Johnson is off the Providence team to deal with personal problems, tweeted CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman on Sunday.

“They are really the least of my concerns,” Miller said of his freshmen last week.

“One of the many positive attributes of this year’s team is that the four freshmen, those guys really handle their business. They work hard every day. … They’re eager to learn. They practice hard, whether we win or whether we lose.

“So many times, whether they personally played well or didn’t play well, they’re the same.”

That’s the way it is going to be for Arizona’s three freshman big men. Not every one is going to be hot at the same time. But the chances of at least one playing his best — or close to it — is really good.

Yeah … it’s good to be deep.

With 7-footer Kaleb Tarczewski burdened with foul trouble for the second consecutive game, the 6-10 Jerrett had what coach Sean Miller called “the best game of his career,” helping fourth-ranked Arizona easily dispatch Oral Roberts 89-64 at McKale Center.

Jerrett scored a career-high 15 points and had four rebounds in 21 minutes. He shot 6 of 8 from the field, including all three of his 3-point attempts.

“Grant, for a long period of time, might have been our team’s best player in practice,” Miller said.

“Early in a guy’s career, through the first five or six games, sometimes it doesn’t translate into the game. Tonight was more of what we see all the time. He’s a really good shooter; one of our team’s best shooters.

“He had a couple of inside baskets, which was great to see, but he does that in practice. What you saw out there is who we’ve seen for a long period of time.”

Jerrett started the first two games before giving way to Brandon Ashley at the power forward spot. Ashley was good, too, against Oral Roberts, with 14 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes for the 9-0 Wildcats.

“They’re learning. They’re letting the game come to them,” senior forward Solomon Hill said of Jerrett and Ashley.

“These are two patient guys who are still learning and who are still finding their way in the offense. Grant had a great shooting night tonight and Brandon was efficient.”

(It should also be noted that sophomore post Angelo Chol came off the bench to provide six rebounds in 13 minutes. He’s not as skill offensively as the trio of freshman big men but he is always working hard around the basket.)

(Note again: Tarczewski, limited to 16 minutes before fouling out, was 4 of 4 from the field.)

Miller, without a legit post player last season, is flush with options.

He said Jerrett’s second half against Florida on Saturday — five points and a block in the final 10:36 — carried over into Tuesday night’s game.

“Sometimes you just need that ball to go into the basket. You just need a good play to happen,” Miller said. “It happened for him in the Florida game.”

Jerrett is averaging 6.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game. His previous scoring high was 11 points at Texas Tech.

“Just stay aggressive and stay confident whenever I catch the ball,” he said of the keys to his play. “Just make the simple play.”

While there will be unavoidable ups-and-downs for the three freshman big men, there is no hand-wringing about their long-term prognosis or about them adhering to the process that will enable them to go for good to great.

Miller doesn’t have to wrestle with bad attitudes or work ethic with these guys. Speaking of which, Arizona transfer Sidiki Johnson made his Providence debut Tuesday night with four points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes.

Miller calls the collective character of this freshman class — which includes guard Gabe York — one of the identities of the team.

“Grant is just a phenomenal kid,” Miller said.

“He’s one of the most unselfish kids I’ve ever been around. It’s only a matter of time before his talent will take over. …

“He does exactly what you ask of him. He’s the same every day in practice. Grant Jerrett broke out tonight. If he plays along these lines every game, it’s exciting to think about what he can do.”
