Arizona Wildcats junior right-hander James Farris has won the first Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award of the season.

Farris allowed one run and two hits in eight innings Saturday in a 14-1 victory over Coppin State. He struck out eight and walked none, retiring the final 15 batters he faced.

Farris is moving up this season from third to second in the rotation behind junior Konner Wade.

Farris picked up right where he left off last season.

He went 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA in two postseason starts, including the clinching game of the championship series at College World Series. He allowed one run and two hits in 7 2/3 innings against South Carolina, picking up a no-decision as the Wildcats rallied in the top of the ninth to win.

Farris, who was 7-3 with a 3.97 ERA last season, is expected to make his next start Saturday against San Jose State at Hi Corbett Field at 4 p.m.

Konner Wade’s superb June has carried over into July.

Wade, the Arizona right-hander who was 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in four postseason starts as the Wildcats won the College World Series, has a sub 1.00 ERA in the prestigious Cape Cod summer league.

Wade has allowed one run in 9.2 innings over five relief appearances for the Wareham Gatemen of the wood-bat league. He has yielded six hits, striking out two and walking two.

Wade skipped a chance to workout at Fenway Park on Wednesday for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Scout Day.

“We’re trying to take it easy on Konner,” Wareham coach Cooper Farris said in a story by GateHouse News Service. “He pitched a lot of innings and he’s been seen plenty by scouts. The book’s already out on him so he doesn’t necessarily need it as much as others.”

Arizona Wildcats second baseman Trent Gilbert, who hit .303 in the postseason and drove in three runs in the College World Series-clinching victory, made his Cape Cod Baseball League debut Monday night.

Gilbert, playing for the Bourne Braves, walked and scored a run in a pinch-hit appearance, staying in the game to play shortstop.

Gilbert capped his freshman season at UA by driving in three runs, including a two-run hit in the ninth inning, as the Cats beat South Carolina 4-1 to win the national championship. He also made a diving catch of a line drive in the bottom of the ninth.

Three other Cats are participating in the wood-bat Cape Cod League — which is the top annual summer event for collegiate players — and should soon make their debuts.

Starting pitcher James Farris and reliever Mat Troupe, who combined on a three-hitter in the final victory over South Carolina, will pitch for the Orleans Firebirds. Farris went 7 2/3 innings vs. the Gamecocks, with Troupe picking up the win in relief. Farris said they will be roommates this summer.

Starting pitcher Konner Wade, whose postseason effort was one of the grandest in school history, will play for the Wareham Gateman. Wade was 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in four postseason starts. He allowed 27 hits and walked only three in 35 innings, throwing three complete games.

Outfielder Johnny Field was also slated to play for the Wareham Gateman, but he was selected for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. The team will play in Cuba and The Netherlands later this month.

Sophomore James Farris will get the start tonight for the Arizona Wildcats

Andy Lopez

Arizona will use sophomore right-hander James Farris against South Carolina tonight as the Wildcats attempt to clinch the College World Series, according to a school official.

Farris hasn’t pitched since the third game of an NCAA regional on June 3, when he pitched a complete game in a 16-3 win over Louisville. He allowed 12 hits and two earned runs, striking out seven and walking one.

Coach Andy Lopez had also considered bringing back ace Kurt Heyer on three days’ rest, but will hold back Heyer for a decisive third game in the championship series, if necessary.

Arizona won the first game Sunday 5-1 behind the pitching of six-hit pitching of Konner Wade and the play of right fielder Robert Refsnyder (two-run homer, an assist on a key put-out at third base).

Farris is 7-3 with a 4.18 ERA. Although he has been the No. 3 starter all season, he has been needed only once in the postseason, as the Wildcats have gone 9-0, staying in the winners’ brackets and playing a minimal schedule that has allowed Lopez to lean on Heyer and Wade.

Heyer pitched Thursday, getting the win over Florida State. He allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings.

If Arizona had lost the first game, Heyer almost certainly would have gotten the call tonight. But that is South Carolina’s problem, as the Gamecocks, facing elimination, will go with their ace, senior Michael Roth (9-1, 2.49 ERA) on three days’ rest.

Arizona’s Andy Lopez ‘leaning heavily’ toward starting Heyer on Thursday

The Arizona Wildcats get three days off from games at the College World Series, leaving coach Andy Lopez with the most pleasant of decisions.

Does he come back with ace Kurt Heyer on Thursday?

By winning its first two games in Omaha, UA avoids the longer, tougher road of the losers’ bracket, thereby preserving its pitching staff and putting more good options on the table for Lopez.

His choices are Heyer, who pitched 7 2/3 innings Friday night in a 12-inning win over Florida State, or sophomore James Farris.

Farris (7-3, 4.18) is the usual third pitcher in the rotation behind Heyer and Konner Wade.

“Haven’t made a definite decision,” Lopez said on Monday afternoon during an interview on 1290-AM KCUB. “But I’m leaning very heavily toward throwing Kurt.”
