Kameron Rooks, the son of former Arizona Wildcats center Sean Rooks, announced Tuesday night he committed to Cal.

The younger Rooks, a 7-foot, 270-pound senior from Mission High School in San Marcos, Calif., had Arizona among his list of finalists. He picked up a scholarship offer from coach Sean Miller in November and took an official visit to the Tucson campus last month.

Rooks had offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, UConn and Washington. He is considered a still-raw prospect with plenty of upside because of his size and bloodlines. Scout.com rates Rooks as a three-star recruit.

Sean Rooks played at Arizona from 1988 to 1992, starting 62 of 129 games. He averaged 11.6 points and 5.0 rebounds for his UA career, and then spent 12 seasons in the NBA.

Arizona has two signed players in this recruiting class — small forward Rondae Jefferson (check out this dunk here, if you haven’t seen it yet) and shooting guard Elliott Pitts.

Miller has room to sign two more players in the spring and/or summer and is hotly pursuing five-star power forward Aaron Gordon. While it would always be nice to sign a legacy recruit such as Rooks, Arizona is well-stocked with young post players and will continue to recruit more.

Arizona Wildcats coach Sean Miller made a quick dash to San Marcos, Calif., on Wednesday to take another look at 7-footer Kameron Rooks of Mission High School.

Miller liked what he saw, offering a scholarship to the son of former UA big man Sean Rooks, who joined the Phoenix Suns’ player development staff last month.

Kameron Rooks, who is in his senior year of high school, also has offers from Washington, Arizona State and Oregon State.

“He’s a legit 7-foot center who can score with his back to the basket and understands the game,” his AAU coach and assistant high school coach Anthony Bolton told 247Sports.com in May after he and Rooks made an unofficial visit to Tucson.

“He has soft hands, a nice stroke, and is a good passer. He needs a strength and conditioning program at the D-1 level but once that happens the sky’s the limit.”

Rooks, 270 pounds, is still a work in progress athletically. He is rated a three-star recruit by Scout.com.
