Red-Blue Game blog: Nice day for freshman Nick Johnson

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

The Red team, led by Jesse Perry’s 20 points and the shooting of Brendon Lavender, beats the Blue team 67-54. Lavender made 4 of 6 3-point shots.

Freshman post Sidiki Johnson had a team-high 18 points for the Blue. Freshman guard Nick Johnson, following his victory in the dunk contest, scored 17 points and made 3 of 4 shots from behind the arc.

“Nick can do a lot of things,” said coach Sean Miller.

“You can see from the dunk contest that very few kids have his athletic talent. And he’s also a very hard worker. First of all, getting him to understand our defense and getting him to real help on defense is something I think he can do. And we’ll work hard in the next couple of weeks to prepare him to do that.

“He’s going to be a really big part of what we’re doing, not just in the future, but this year.”

It can be a really big celebration, too.

And, as Miller says, it all takes place “at a sane time.”

A filled arena should be a fine introduction to McKale for the team’s four freshmen.

“It’s the first time we get those young guys out there and get those first-game bugs out,” said senior Kyle Fogg.

Here is the press release from UA about the sell-out:
