Former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier, who told ESPN last week he had Arizona among his five potential transfer schools, said today he will attend Miami.

“Miami had the best opportunity,” Forcier told ESPN. “There is so much positive energy around this program and I really want to be a part of it.”

Was Forcier ever that interested in Arizona … or vice-versa? I don’t think so. TucsonCitizen.com reached his father, Mike, on Monday but he didn’t want to comment on Arizona while his son was on a recruiting trip to Miami.

For sure, the Wildcats have an interest in another transfer quarterback — ex-Rutgers starter Tom Savage, who told TucsonCitizen.com recently he will take a recruiting trip to Arizona, starting Tuesday.

According to other reports, Savage was said to have interest in Miami, so Forcier’s decision might impact Savage what will do. Both players will have to sit out the 2011 season before having two years of eligibility remaining.

Savage could be an important “bridge” quarterback, helping fill the gap after the 2011 season, when the Wildcats will lose Nick Foles, Bryson Beirne and, possibly, Matt Scott. Scott would like to redshirt in 2011 and become the starter in 2012, but that plan could get derailed by an injury to Foles.

Former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier has narrowed his transfer options to Kansas State, Washington, Arizona, Miami and Montana, according to a story from ESPN’s Joe Schad.

Forcier will begin taking visits next week, probably starting with Kansas State or Miami, according to Schad.

Forcier, from San Diego, was a 12-game starter as a true freshman in 2009 but lost the starting job to Denard Robinson last season. He also had some academic problems, as detailed in this story by the Detroit Free Press.

TucsonCitizen.com has reported that another true freshman quarterback standout from 2009 is considering Arizona. Ex-Rutgers starter Tom Savage told us he has a recruiting visit set for Feb. 15.

Both players would have to sit out the 2011 season if they transfer to a Football Bowl Subdivision team. They have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Arizona is in the market for quarterback help for 2012, when the team might have no experience at the position, unless the coaches are able to pull off a redshirt for senior Matt Scott next season.

Forcier completed 165 of 281 passes for 2,050 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, as a freshman. He was 54 of 84 for 597 yards — with four TDs and four interceptions — in 2010.
