Arizona got their first win over Nebraska a few days ago. The Wildcats got a commitment from Corona, Calif. Wide Receiver Tyler Slavin.

The 6-1, 191-pounder from Eleanor Roosevelt High School chose Arizona over the Huskers, Colorado, Washington, ASU and Nebraska.

“I love everything about Arizona,” he explained. “The coaches the locations it is beautiful and it is close enough to home.”

Slavin is rated by ESPN.com as their No. 53 receiver in the nation. He’s a three-star recruit, with a 78 rating.

“He is not a burner,” wrote ESPN’s Scouts Inc in an evaluation. “However, he is smooth and fluid for his size. Has very good height and knows how to use it. On vertical routes, he has sneaky speed and while he doesn’t just run by defensive backs, if he gets a step he then will push off ever so slightly to gain position at the last second.”

He was recruited by Arizona linebackers coach Tim Kish and visited in early November. As a senior he caught 34 passes for 640 yards (18.8 average) and eight touchdowns. He had 20 touchdowns in three varsity seasons.

“I can’t wait to get there,” Slavin said. “I’m going to be there three days after graduation and right on into the season.”

He is the second receiver prospect in the 2010 class. Speedster Garic Wharton from Valley High School in Las Vegas has been verbally committed since June. Oceanside’s (Calif.) J.J. Whitaker is being recruited as an athlete, but can play either receiver or defensive back. Which side of the ball he eventually winds up on remains to be seen, but the early feeling seems to be Whitaker playing defense.

Arizona is still in on a handful of receivers. Bud Sasser is a big, tall receiver from Denton, TX who could wind up being better than his No. 62 in the nation ranking. Slavin’s teammate at Roosevelt, Austin Hill, is another tall, athletic receiver the Cats are looking at. Both he and Sasser have visited Nebraska and could very well have their eyes on the Holiday Bowl.

Speaking of the Holiday Bowl and San Diego, the Cats also seem to have some interest from Victor Dean of Lincoln HS in San Diego.
