What is Jack thinking?

by on Apr. 28, 2010, under Sports

I am still wrapping my mind around the announcement that Kadeem Jack is heading to prep school instead of beginning his college career in 2010. The move is puzzling as Jack is ready to compete at the D-I level right now and his grades are in order.

This leads me to believe that one of a few scenarios are at play.

1.) Jack wants a better offer. It is possible that by not signing this month and publicly announcing his intention to head to prep school, that Jack could return to the AAU scene and try to improve his stock. Jack has some good schools involved, but maybe Arizona and UConn are not enough. Maybe he has his sights set on something he deems as bigger and better.

This is not good for Arizona. If this is true, then Jack does not consider Arizona to be in the class of other programs like Kentucky, Kansas and North Carolina. Sean Miller already saw that players like Doron Lamb and Josh Selby chose more established programs and could be losing a guy like Jack to the same thing.

2.) Jack has a better offer. Conceivably after his great performance at the regional game of the Jordan Brand Classic, a big time program stepped up with an offer but does not have the scholarship available at this time. It could be that Jack has chosen prep school as he waits for either a scholarship to open up in 2010 OR they have “stashed” him (ala the college football greyshirt) at the prep school until they can bring him in as part of the 2011 class.

3.) Jack really has no clue. Of course maybe Jack is just a confused kid. Maybe he doesn’t feel comfortable with any of the schools he is involved with OR he likes too many schools and cannot pare down his list. Maybe by choosing prep school, he has bought himself some time to make a decision, and if he doesn’t, then he can fall back to prep school and wait another year to make his choice.

If Jack is being stashed at a prep school he could verbally commit, no?

It is much better to not commit than to commit and not follow through on that commitment.  Give the kid some space.

It is interesting how all these top players considered AZ but none of them came. I figured it would take Miller two or three years to start attracting them again. With the record last season, AZ is still a big gamble, show a curve of improvement and Miller can sell the angle. The best thing that could have happened to AZ is a 15-14 season. With 5 talented freshman with a year of experience under them and three more on their way in, Miller does not need 5 star players; Miller needs experienced players and that is what he will have next year.Combine this with the continuity of the same coach for more than a single year in a row, AZ should be right near the top of the conference next year. No one is really talking about this but this is a big deal. 4 years of different styles to learn creates no year to year leverage. All players back are practicing RIGHT TO what Miller wants right now. This is worth at minimum 5 more wins. What may turn out to be better for AZ is Miller recruiting solid players that will stick around for 3-4 years versus the Shelby’s, Lamb’s etc. Compare Williams, Parroms and MoMo’s numbers with the top 25 five stars in the league next year. You will see that a second year MoMo is equal to a 5 star recruit.
