Arizona football recruiting: An early look at 2012 needsby Brad Allis on Feb. 07, 2011, under Arizona Wildcats Football, Sports
The ink is barely dry on the Letters of Intent for the 2011 class and it is already time to look at the 2012 class.
The Wildcats lose just 19 scholarship players, 21 if you count Apai Tuihalamaka and Vaughn Dotsy who had their careers ended due to injury. In reality the Cats will again sign between 23-25 players, but only have a few need positions.
The Wildcats lose six receivers, but surprisingly, this is not as big of a need as you might think. Last year the Wildcats lost just two receivers, but signed three and added Texas transfer Dan Buckner. This season only one player moved on, but the Wildcats added two pass catchers.
My guess is the Wildcats will attempt to sign 2-3 wideouts.
The Wildcats also lose three quarterbacks, assuming Matt Scott does not redshirt, but have tried to bolster the ranks the last two recruiting classes and are pursuing a couple of D-I transfers
Ideally the Cats would probably like to add two quarterbacks, with one of them having some position flexibility.
Defensive back could also be a need spot. The Cats lose three, but have a number of young players on the roster after adding five defensive backs in the 2010 class and two more this past recruiting class.
An early guess at recruiting targets:
- QB: 2
- RB: 2
- OL: 3-5
- WR: 2
- TE: 1
- DE: 3
- DT: 2-3
- LB: 2-3
- DB: 3-4
- Kickers: 2
