Fall camp is coming soon for the Wildcat football team. No position is more important than quarterback. Today we take a look at Nick Foles, Matt Scott and the gang.

Honest Evaluation:

I am a Nick Foles fan. I truly believe that he is one of the top-three quarterbacks in the Pac-10. Play calling and the thumb injury were issues late in the season and it can be argued that the Cats were still two fluke plays away from a 10-win season (of course they were also two plays away from being a .500 team). The counter argument is that Foles was at the center of those two fluke plays and some of the iffy play calls were check downs by Foles.

Foles had an average spring, but by now we all know he is “better under the lights” than he is in a practice situation. Still, you’d like to see him play great during fall camp, especially if Matt Scott makes a push.

I liked what I saw from Scott this spring and still think he can be an intriguing weapon, but not over Foles. The run/pass combination is interesting and if the Cats can figure out how the use him, but not disrupt Foles’ rhythm, or the overall offensive flow.

The Cats also have the first dedicated quarterbacks coach in the Stoops era. Frank Scelfo comes to Tucson and the players are very excited about the change. While Mike Canales and Sonny Dykes did a great job, they also had to be concerned with being offensive coordinators, Scelfo, though he will have input on the offense, is primarily concerned with the passers.

Overall, I think the Cats have a very nice quarterback situation.

Did You Know?

• Foles is the third transfer quarterback to start for the Wildcats since 1987? Foles (Michigan State), Dan White (Penn State) and Bobby Watters (SMU) all started for the Cats. Both White and Foles led the Wildcats to bowl games.
• The Wildcats have four scholarship quarterbacks. Three juniors and an incoming true freshman. Two other scholarship passers, Tyler Lyon and Richard Morrison, have moved to tight end and wide receiver respectively.
• McDonaled, a sophomore walk-on, is the son of former USC quarterback Paul McDonald.
