Like Annika, Ochoa leaves on top

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Apparently if you are a women’s golfer from the University of Arizona who then goes on to dominate the LPGA you don’t want to wear out your welcome. Like Annika Sorenstam just two years ago, former Wildcat Lorena Ochoa announced her retirement from professional golf.

Also like Sorrenstam she leaves as the world’s top rated women’s golfer.

“Lorena Ochoa confirms her retirement from the LPGA, as news reports in some media have said today,” her camp said via a statement to the press. “The reasons and more details on the matter will be given by Lorena personally in a press conference on Friday in Mexico City. Lorena will share this news of a new stage in her life with her sponsors, family members and friends.”

It is believed that she too leaves the game behind to start a family, as Sorentstam did a few years ago.

Ochoa won 27 tournament titles, including two majors. She was a four-time player of the year and won over $14 million.

Sorrenstam won 72 LPGA Tournaments including 10 majors and was the first women’s golfer to compete in a PGA event in 58 years.
