The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum has a new black bear on display. According to museum staff, the bear is a female, 10-years old, and estimated to weigh about 350 pounds. She is a big bear. Average size for black bears is between 100 and 300 pounds.
Black bears, Ursus americanus, come in several colors including brown, cinnamon, white, blonde, and bluish grey. The Desert Museum bear is a dark auburn-brown color.
Black bears are omnivorous and eat a variety of fruit, vegetable matter, carrion, rodents, insects and almost anything else they can get.
The new bear has always been a zoo bear, but formerly kept in a flat enclosure. She is now exploring and getting used to the more enriching environment of the Desert Museum habitat.
