The national Academies of Science now offers its 4,000 plus publications for free download as PDF files. You must sign up with an email address and password, but no other information is required.

Go to the homepage of National Academies Press: http://www.nap.edu/

Once there you can browse topics to find books and articles of interest.

This service began on June 2, 2011.
