Along with other mammals,   the first horses appeared during the early Eocene
of North  America.  During the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum,
they were miniature broncos, only about the size of small dogs or housecats,
and browsers (woody material and fruits) rather than grazers (grass).  Too small to ride, of course, but then, we weren’t around yet anyway.]]></description>
