“Fatally Flawed” documentary at Crossroads Theater on Monday

by on Nov. 12, 2009, under Arts, Life, Politics

If you care about election integrity in our own Pima County, mark your calendars for Monday, November 16. “Fatally Flawed” premiered at the Loft Theater on September 16, and exactly two months later it will be at the Crossroads Theater, 4811 E. Grant Rd. at 7 p.m. Admission is only $3. See Off the Marquee’s blog about this movie on 9/11.

“Fatally Flawed” by Tucsonan J.T. Waldron documents the investigation spearheaded by the Pima County Democratic Party and their attorney Bill Risner, with the assistance of election integrity advocates John Brakey (Audit AZ) and Libertarian Jim March (Black Box Voting). These three men became obsessed with seeking the truth about the May 2006 RTA Election that authorized a sales tax increase totaling $2 Billion to fund the Regional Transportation Authority. You can read about the events leading up to making of the film at www.fatallyflawedthemovie.com.

“The film allows you watch events as they unfold through the eyes of seasoned lawyer and activist Bill Risner. As the story develops, it becomes evident that what initially appeared to be a public mandate to expand the city’s roads was a likely case of election fraud. At every step of the way, citizens seeking answers are met with resistance from election facilitators, local politicians and even the state’s own attorney general. Persistent unanswered questions generated by the lawsuit and new evidence of wrongdoing on the part of elections division personnel led to an equally suspicious investigation by the Arizona attorney general. This investigation culminated in a recount conducted under conditions that made meaningful public oversight impossible.” (from the movie website)

I sat in on the Tucson Citizen editorial board meeting (as a “My Tucson” columnist) when these three men came to present their findings in 2008, and I saw the movie’s premier on September 16, which was well attended. Many local Tucsonans are seen in this movie, including attorney Vince Rabago, then Chair of the Pima County Democratic Party, activist Mike Hayes of the Campbell/Grant Northeast Neighborhood Association, and Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll at their board meeting fighting for transparency in releasing election data files.

If you can’t attend the movie, the cost of the DVD is $25 online.

Voters should not be forced to beg for what is part of their Full Voting
    Rights.

Right now we have a 0% assurance in our counting system in nearly all
    50 states of our country.

We need a three step counting process which will move the assurance
    level to 100%:

    Step 1:  Closing Count
Count all ballots at polling place at end of election day, using
hand cound or machine count. Fill out reports and seal
                   machines.

    Step 2:  Verification count:
Before election workers go home perform a Verification count
by maual hand count of every vote of every ballot cast,
including voters intent.  If the Verification count is the same
as the Closing count , the Closing count shall be the official
count for that polling place.  But, if the Verification count does
not equal the Closing count then the Verification count
becomes the official count for that polling place.

    Step 3:  Recounts:
Set recount trigger level at 1%< 2%, 3% levels.  Any citizen,
voter, candidate or party can request for a recount.  Set up
a low refundable fee based on percentage level.  The election
budget shall cover the cost of the recount.

    Thanks and Good Luck

Where is the outrage at that acorn group from chicago?

JT Waldron and Alissa Johnson did a good job distilling a very complex issue into a very important film. And not just on a local level. The implications about honest elections and accurately counted votes are worldwide wherever electronic vote systems are employed without complete oversight.
    Go see this film.

Thanks for your comments.  Yes, making sure that every person’s vote is counted accurately is a touchstone of our democracy.   Election integrity is crucial to trust in government, especially on the local level.

Bill Risner is a man of integrity. This documentary would not have been produced were there not a subterranean story.  One thing is for sure, the Attorney General, Terry Goddard is clearly not going to investigate the only people who can deliver the Governors gavel. In that respect, we just like Chicago.

I hate it when you cannot edit your comments! tsk!  so it reads..”we are just like Chicago.

Reminder: this documentary screens tonight at Crossroads 6 Cinema at 7 p.m.. Like you Mike, I also have a lot of respect for attorney Bill Risner, who exhibited such dogged determination to seek the truth about Pima County Elections Division.  See what the Star says about their handing of the recent 11/3 election,

Few films have opened my eyes to the machinations of Tucson as this one did.  I am saddened by the revelation that much of what and who governs this valley can rival any of the modus operandi of Chicago polictics, and possibly exceed them.
I prefer to think that people like you and Bill Risner are true Tucsonans. The others are alien visitors. As they say. the sunlight makes the cockroaches scurry. And we got plenty of sun in Tucson.
