Update on “Voting on Health” legislative candidate forum (LDs 25 through 30)

by on Oct. 19, 2010, under Life, Politics

“Tucson Progressive” (Pamela Powers) reported on this health forum for state legislative candidates tomorrow night at the Mel & Enid Zuckerman School of Public Health (click here), but I’m posting an update of more candidates expected to speak.

From the University of Arizona’s Mel & Enid Zuckerman School of Public Health website:

The health and wellness of Arizonans is a hot topic of debate this election season. Get to know the candidates and where they stand on health issues next Wednesday, Oct. 20th at the University of Arizona’s Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

Graduate students from the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health will host the open forum titled, “Voting on Health: A Southern Arizona Candidate Forum.”

This is an opportunity for voters to hear what the legislative candidates have to say about their role in promoting the wellbeing of Southern Arizonans, and their plans to address key issues that affect the health of individuals living in this region. The forum in open to the public.

Participating Arizona legislative candidates running for state offices in the November 2nd election:

Paula Aboud (D) for State Senate, District 28
Dr. Ted Downing (N/I) for State Senate, District 28
Dave Ewoldt (I) for State Senate, District 28
Steve Farley (D) House seat, District 28
Pat Fleming (D) House seat, District 25
Sally Gonzales (D) House seat, District 27
Peggy Judd (R) House seat, District 25
Pat Kilburn (R) House seat, District 29
Bruce Wheeler (D) House seat, District 28

Drachman Hall, 1295 N. Martin Avenue, Room B109, Tucson, AZ. Parking is free in the Drachman Hall East lot after 5 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 | 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Refreshments will be served from 6:30-7 p.m.)

That’s the information on the website, but the latest update is that these candidates are also attending:

Gene Chewning (I), House seat, District 27
Dr.Todd Camenisch (D), Senate seat, District 30
Robert Compton (R), House seat, District 27
Ruben Ortega (D), House seat, District 25 (maybe)
Daniel Patterson (D), House seat, District 29
Dr. Macario Saldate (D), House seat, District 27
Ken Smalley (R), House seat, District 28
Kent Solberg (G), House seat, District 27

That’s a lot of candidates (15 or 16) to listen to in 2 hours, from the Democratic, Republican, and Green Parties, and three Independents.

This will hopefully be a neutral, non-partisan forum to learn about candidates’ views on health issues in the state legislature, prior to the 11/2/10 General Election. I corrected the notice on their website to reflect that Dr. Downing is no longer running as a Democrat, but now Non-partisan/Independent. I wrote about that change back in March (click here).

Thanks for updating, Carolyn. I was surprised LD30 was not on the list; now I see Todd.

Thanks Daniel, I updated my info above to include you at tonight’s forum.

About 40 people there tonight to listen to these candidates,  with addition of  Dr. Matt Heinz (LD 29 House), Greg Krino (LD 28 Senate) and Andrea Dalessandro (LD 30 House) who weren’t on the last updated list of candidates.  Ruben Ortega (LD 25) and Pat Kilburn (LD 29) did not show. So 18 candidates in total tonight to discuss public health issues for Arizona.

I was cordially invited with adequate notice.  In my large LD 30 district in Pima, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties, I often have several events scheduled for the same night.  Glad I was able to attend in the end.   Groups who invite me have been very gracious in understanding my situation.

Recap of Candidate Forums from where I sit:
    1.  July University of Arizona, Pima Community College and COVE (Citizens of Vail for Education) invited me to attend an Education Forum.  I would have attended and changed conference plans.  Vogt and Gowan declined or did not answer.   EVENT CANCELED.
    2.  September Green Valley LWV, Chamber of Commerce, AAUW and others sponsored a Candidate Forum-Gowan and Vogt were represented by empty chairs
    3. September  Sierra Vista League of Women Voters Not an opponent to be seen.  Vogt sent a statement say he was “protecting” education-maybe in Salt Lake City where he is from or in DC, Texas or other states where he is raising money but clearly not on Arizona where he has lived since only 2006 or 2007.
    4.  September Catalina Foothills Education forum Not a LD 30 opponent in sight but LD 26 GOP candidates did supply “interesting” comments.
    5. I attended two Forums on Disability Issues.  Vogt attended one and gave the exact same speech that he gave earlier at a poorly attended Pima Council on Aging event in Green Valley.
    6.  A Vail Academy government teacher wanted his class to run a candidate debate for the LD 30 House race.  My opponents either refused to attend or did not RSVP.  EVENT CANCELED.
    7.  University of Arizona South Candidate event.   EVENT CANCELED.  It was on my calendar. The only Gowan sightings were on AZ Illustrated http://tv.azpm.org/whatson/spotlight/2010/9/14/1444-ld-30-showdown/  and the Clean Election Debate http://www.azcleanelections.gov/home/video/generaldebatevids2010/LD30.aspx.My letter that recently appeared in the Sierra Vista Herald. On Wednesday, September 22, 2010, I was ready to face my opponents, David Gowan and Janson “Ted” Vogt at a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Cochise County.  I received my invitation on July 1 and put the date on her calendar because Sierra Vista, its people and their issues are important to me.

To me, a campaign is like applying for a job and when you don’t show up for the job interview, you should not be given the job.  I want the voters of Sierra Vista to know that I showed up for the interview, my opponents did not.  I also plan on taking your concerns to Phoenix on the merits of what Sierra Vista needs, not on what Phoenix thinks you should have, unlike my opponents.I am grateful to the LWV for going forward with the event at the Sierra Vista Library last Wednesday to give citizens an opportunity to ask me questions during the meet and greet after my opening remarks.

It saddens me that the people of Sierra Vista don’t mean enough to either of my opponents for them to take the time to interview with their constituents. They take the voters for granted so why bother listening to what they have to say?  I just don’t operate that way, and hope that the people of Sierra Vista give me the opportunity to represent them with real respect for their concerns. It’s time to give Sierra Vista professional, capable and independent representation at the Capitol.  People are tired of Phoenix puppets and ineffective incumbents. You deserve better.  http://www.andreaforaz.net Andrea DalessandroCandidate for Legislative District 30 Representative.Sound Policy over Politics,

Thanks Andrea, I’m sure voters realize how busy a legislative candidate is and can’t attend all these forums, but I have seen you at several, including this last one at the School of Public Health.
