Farewell Gabe Zimmerman, Congresswoman Giffords’ aide

by on Jan. 09, 2011, under Life, Politics

Gabe Zimmerman

I knew Gabe Zimmerman (Director of community outreach) and I wept over reading about his senseless killing yesterday at the Safeway on Oracle/Ina, when his employer CD 8 Congresswoman Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords was also shot in the head allegedly by Jared Lee Loughner (who is in custody). 19 people were injured in the shooting, 6 have died.

Apparently former Tucson Citizen Associate Editor Mark Kimble (who now works for Gabby as a speech writer) was there as well, helping with constituents, but he was not injured.

Also shot and injured were Gifford’s District Director Ron Barber and part-time outreach coordinator Pam Simon. I just met Pam at an Arizona Women’s Political Caucus holiday event in December, when she spoke on Gabby’s behalf (click here). Both are recovering at University Medical Center here in Tucson.

More here at AZ Central about Gifford’s aides:

Gabe was with Congresswoman Giffords from the beginning as a field organizer during her first campaign back in 2006. I remember how thrilled he was to then become part of her local Tucson staff, and I’ve communicated off and on with him since then. And the news article says he was engaged to be married. He was only 30 years old when he was killed yesterday. He was a great guy, very dedicated and passionate about helping constituents, in representing the Congresswoman.

A private memorial service has been scheduled for January 15. I also serve on the Casitas of Broadway board with his mother Emily Nottingham, retired City of Tucson community services administrator. Heartfelt condolences to the Ross Zimmerman family.

And pray for Gabby, who’s still in critical condition in the ICU (intensive care unit) following brain surgery at University Medical Center, on Campbell Avenue. She is married to NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, and has two step daughters Claudia and Claire Kelly.

List of the other deceased victims, most of whom were Giffords’ constituents apparently waiting in line to speak with her at her “Congress on Your Corner” event:
(There are a few discrepancies in the names of these victims, with the news coming in so quickly since yesterday’s shooting).

-John Roll, 63, a federal district court judge (Chief Judge in U.S. District Court for AZ)

- Dorwan Stoddard, 76, a volunteer at Mountain Ave. Church of Christ (his wife Mavanell was also shot & injured, but is expected to recover)

-Christina-Taylor Green, 9, a student at Mesa Verde Elementary

-Dorothy Morris, 76 (not Murray as originally reported)

-Phyllis Schneck, 79, a retiree from the East Coast

Condolences to all the families of these innocent victims.

    Thank you Carolyn.

    • Carolyn Classen

You’re welcome Carlos. I used to see Gabe around Tucson, proudly and competently representing the Congresswoman.  He was a very dedicated staffer and will be missed.

  • Alohapuna

Gabe has always been articulate, loyal and dedicated when representing the Congresswoman. It makes me very sad to think the meeting in which I last saw him had become rather acrimonious as it was a very sensative issue.  Even with our opposing views at the time, I liked him and have always had great respect and admiration for him.
It is terribly tragic that the life of such a fine young gentleman with such promise was cut short in his prime.  Yes, he will be missed and I’m heartsick for his colleagues who will definately face a painful void in their daily lives.
    Aloha, Gabe!

    • Carolyn Classen

Yes, Alohapuna, very tragic for such a young man to be gunned down in the line of duty, working for a U.S. Congresswoman.  Having been a Congressional aide myself, I wonder about safety for aides now, in the wake of this shooting incident.

  • sdgman

This is heartbreaking and so sad.  Condolences from DC.

    • Carolyn Classen

Thank you, the citizens of Tucson are still in shock over this horrendous shooting, especially mourning the six deaths including Gabe’s.  And we are  praying for Congresswoman Giffords and the other victims of this tragedy who are still recovering in the hospitals.

  • fraser007

Your always a class act Carolyn. Well done.

The Three Sonorans is reporting that the nutjob Kansas Minister may be picketing the funerals. May I suggest that thousands of Tucson citizens surround each of their picketers (about 300 for each picketer) and just just walk in a direction. Any direction.
The nutjobs from Kansas cannot come here in this stressful time and defacate on our community.

I’d like to share “Christina Taylor Green on My Mind” http://obrag.org/?p=30437 as part of my grieving.

    • Carolyn Classen

Beautiful poem Ernie for a beautiful young child, struck down way too soon in life.  Most of us still cannot comprehend the mad rage of a shooter who kills innocent children such as Christina (age 9) and the elderly (up to age 79).

Jewish media are trying to confirm whether Zimmerman was Jewish. His death is a tragedy, regardless of his ethnic/religious background, but his death will have special resonance in the Jewish world if his religion is confirmed as Jewish.

    • Carolyn Classen

Not sure about Gabe, but his employer Congresswoman Giffords is Jewish, and some news sources are speculating if shooter Jared Loughner targeted her for her religious beliefs.

I just read that Gabe’s memorial service will be private, so I hope people respect the family’s wishes.

If you are a real reporter, then maybe you should cut through the innuendo and get out the straight skinny on this.  The Feds are in this for a reason.  They know there isn’t any death penalty in the Ninth Circuit.  Now the judge was coming from church service, and couldn’t have been on Gov’t business.  So the prosecutor is over-reaching here.  But what if Gabe became the ‘musta die’ figure, when Jared  saw that Gabe knew who he was?  When and how could they have previously interacted?   As a social worker, Gabe would have had the inside track, if he had tried to help Jared, sometime earlier.  He was circulating in Tucson, and he had the right training to spot mental illness.  If Jared’s high power lawyer, jumps in with some defense, that it was a personal issue, she may just get the whole trial put into State Court, and out of Federal Jurisdiction.  But then it’s stuck back in the Ninth Circuit.  Tim McVeigh never got this break, and he was executed by the Feds, in short order.  Do you want any less for Jared?  Realistically, only the Congresswoman and an aide or two, could have reasonably I.D.’d Jared, from previous inter-actions.  So those two witnesses may have had to be eliminated first.  The little girl was just in the wrong place.  But that leaves only two dead, and the husband jumped into the line of fire to save his wife.  So, out of all the shooting, only the Congresswoman, and Gabe seem to be precision targets.  But which of these two were the must die first?  With all his firepower, and nearly 100 rounds of ammo, he should have been able to brush everyone down to the ground, and simply walk away.  But he didn’t count on the adrenalin rush of the little lady who jumped all over him after being shot.   Fortunately, she disabled his Glocker.   And this extended clip is properly known as a detachable magazine.  This over priced, Austrian plastic wonder,  just isn’t up to being tricked out this way. IMHO, he aimed twice, and then just sprayed away. “Aim small, miss small”, from the Mel Gibson movie,  “The Patriot”, and you’d have had about a dozen, or more deaths,  at that gathering.  The hit on that poor little girl, was like an adult being shot with a .357 magnum, or 45 auto.

  • Carolyn Classen

Dave T, you are right, I am not a “real reporter”, only a part-time volunteer blogger at Tucsoncitizen.com.

  • Danielle Kacer

I knew when I heard the name Gabe Zimmerman that it sounded familar and not until an old co-worker called me to inform me it was the Gabe we use to work with at Arizona’s Children.  We all loved Gabe and he was a great person to staff, and especially the youths.  He touched many hearts and this tragic event was enough to hear about and now hits hearder because I knew Gabe professionally.

    • Carolyn Classen

Thanks for your kind thoughts Danielle.  I’ve been hearing from lots of people who knew Gabe and are so saddened by the tragedy of his murder at age 30.  Many knew him at University High School, which Congresswoman Giffords also graduated from.
