Ward 3 Councilmember Karin Uhlich read the Mayor/Council proclamation today at a press conference for Independents Week.  Also encouraging support of Tucson businesses were Executive Director of Local First AZ, Kimber Lanning and Deanna Chevas, who manages the Tucson office which has 300 member businesses.  Sharon Bart of The Running Shop at 3055 N. Campbell (for 31 years) hosted this press conference this morning.  Shop locally this week!

I always try to buy locally. Its not always possible. I buy my food from Grocery Outlet, Trader Joes and Fry’s. Some “local” and some national chains. I buy from Ace Hardware. Locally owned but a national chain. Two edged sword there. I buy from Lowe’s if there is a piece of equipment that I need that is cheaper.
Books that I buy are 90% locally supplied, clothes, usually resale but sometimes from a national chain.
Maybe the Councilwoman should have been watching where the Rio Nuevo money went? Some of that was “out of state” and lots was spent locally! Show us that list of contractors. Lots of local rip off artists at the gravy train for that boondoggle.

One of the problems with Rio Nuevo was that the projects were all so big & costly that they were difficult to implement.  If they had started small with renovations of store fronts on Congress and Broadway, downtown would be a lot better off already. But thanks for your comments Fraser007.
