Trying to move the Tucson gem show will result in killing the gem show

[CORRECTED VERSION]

This weekend more than three-dozen gem shows will get underway around town. The thousands of rock, gem, mineral and fossil dealers who flock to Tucson for the first two weeks of every February comprise the largest annual gathering of such dealers in the world.

Colloquially known as the Tucson Gem Show, it has been an economic boon to Tucson for more than 50 years with some analyses claiming it generates more than $100 million annually for the metropolitan area.

But for the past couple of years there has been a lot of speculation and hand wringing about the future of the gem show in Tucson. The American Gem Trade Association, which hosts one of the largest wholesale shows, is unhappy.

The AGTA has been hosting its wholesale show at the Tucson Convention Center since the early 1990s but it has outgrown the space. The AGTA and others have been promised a renovated and expanded convention center for more than a decade but improvements to TCC became embroiled in the Rio Nuevo debacle. It’s unlikely improvements to the TCC will be completed within the next five years.

Frustrated, the AGTA show organizer has suggested the show might leave Tucson for a more accommodating city and better facilities.

That suggestion has caused some local politicians to whip the community into a panicky lather in an attempt to force action on the TCC. They have claimed that the TCC must be improved now or we risk losing the gem show.

But there is no monolithic show. There are more than 40 shows spread around town. While the TGMS main show used to be the sun in which all the other satellite shows revolved, it is now just one of many and the only one that’s affected by the TCC.

It is the biggest and most important, to be sure, but it is unlikely if not improbable that if the AGTA were to leave for Phoenix or Las Vegas, or wherever, that the 40 or so other show producers and the more than 5,000 dealers they represent would pack up and follow.

What is likely is that an attempt to move the gem show as it is now composed would result in killing the expo as competing show producers and dealers bicker over where to go or even whether to go. You could end up with some shows in one or more other cities and some shows still here.

Expanding and improving the TCC is in this community’s best interest, not just to make the gem show people happy, but also to attract larger and more frequent convention business to town.

What’s more, we should be just as concerned with the happiness of the 40 or more other show producers and the quality of their venues.

So as the shows get underway this week, lets dial back the “We could lose the gem show” rhetoric and instead work together to solve our common problem without making threats that no one wants, nor probably intends to keep.

The Tucson leaders continually shoot our community in the foot every chance they get. Every other meaningful organization has left Tucson, that includes spring training. Tucson cannot be held at ransom for unreasonable request from sports organizations or convention gatherings that is for sure.
The Tucson Gem and Mineral show moving to another city would be in my opinion the worst set back this town has ever experienced. I agree 100% it is not only the Tucson leaders responsibility to keep the gem show,  but the voters of this city as well. Do we need a new Hotel at the convention center? i really don’t know the answer to that, but we surely do not need it at the cost that have been tossed around to the architects throughout the process.
I do know at some point and time the Gem and Mineral show will not be satisfied with zero results concerning there overall needs for an infinite amount of time. Having said that i also do not believe the Tucson leaders should try to whip up any hysteria or panic in the community because they have drug there feet throughout the years.
Let’s hope the gem and mineral show stays for a very long time in Tucson.

Hope is not an action plan.  The gem and mineral show will leave, much the same way Spring Training has.  Despite the wishes of the community at large Tucson is growing and subsequently sprawling with no structure to support it.  Keep and advance what we’ve got because I love this community and don’t want to watch everything leave for greener pastures or accomodations while the community itself diminishes.

We have lost much over the years, and will lose much in the future, if the leaders do not wake up and see that this is a large community, not a small town. We seem to have leadership that has no vision, and only no that they do not want to be like Phx. The sad part is that they will never be like Phx, because Phx had a vision, and has learned they can not stay a small town, with small town issues. Tucson has large metropolis issues, but a small town mentality. Tucson will never be a Phx. because our leadership is not smart enough to be a Phx.

I moved here  17 years ago because I came to the Gem and Mineral Show from Boston and fell in love with the desert and the International feeling of the show. Tucson leaders should acknowledge the importance this show has on the economy and vibrancy of the city and act to support that. As a yearly attendee, it is frustrating to deal with the city’s apparent disregard when year after year there is construction, or petty parking restrictions or lack of help creating large venues for show organizers. WAKE UP TUCSON! This show is a blessing and the city leaders should do all in their power to make the show experience a positive one for attendees and show organizers alike.

Totally absurd to think that the entire show couldn’t move. Now, it may stay there forever but imagine the show in one location instead of being spread over many miles. Then there’s the airline connections…

I’m amazed that it’s lasted that long in Tucson.

Mark, thanks for the opportunity to comment on the Tucson Gem and MIneral show.  I have been attending the show for over 30 years, so have some experience with seeing how the show has evolved over the years.
In addition to the concerns of the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society, I would like to add that from a buyer perspective one of the most frustrating issues with a show that is spread all over the city is lack of PARKING and no public transportation to reach the shows, now around 42 different shows this year.  From my perspective as an annual visitor to Tucson this is contributing more to killing the show than anything else other than the economy in general.
I recently attended the Munich show, the largest in Europe that is all held under one roof of their recently expanded convention center.  Public transportation, and ample parking takes one directly to the convention center where all shows are held, minerals in one hall, jewelery in another hall, and one for fossils.  So, yes it can be done, but it takes a strong local govenment to provide the required facilities to make a world class center for expo’s and conventions, and thus far Tucson has not been able to demonstrate that resolve of developing the necessary priorities for how important they treat conventions as a critical revenue resource for the city.
I hope you have success in building the necessary support for making Tucson into a World-Class city to attract and support major expo’s and conventions.
    Sincerely,
    Shields Flynn

As an attendee, I have to say, I love my yearly trek to Tucson. The climate, the Layout everything. I can’t imagine the Gemshow moving.
