Medicare Advantage Selling Season

by on Nov. 18, 2010, under Health

The race is on!  People on Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans have until the end of the year to change their coverage.  Medicare Advantage plans are mailing marketing materials to seniors, inviting them to seminars, and selling the benefits of their Medicare Advantage plans.

Yesterday I met with a man who was my first client when I became an independent broker representing all the Medicare Advantage plans in Tucson and several Medicare Supplement companies.  When Roy turned 65 his wife wanted him to get a Medicare Supplement, but he wanted the lower cost Medicare Advantage option.  Roy has some health issues and he spends summers in Minnesota, so I told him he should get a Medicare Supplement.  His wife agreed, so he signed up for a Medicare Supplement and a stand-alone Part D plan.

Our meeting yesterday was an annual event:  Every November, Roy calls me up to ask me to meet with him and his wife.  As we sit at the kitchen table, Roy says he wants to consider moving to Medicare  Advantage… and I tell him he shouldn’t do it.  I remind him of the benefits of his Plan F Medicare Supplement and he complains that the premium went up again.  I say, “I could make some more money off you by enrolling you in a Medicare Advantage plan, but I don’t really want to do that.  But it’s your decision”.   We talk for a while and Roy agrees that he should stay with his Medicare Supplement.  His wife is happy.

As I was leaving his house, I joked about our annual get-together, and  Roy said, “See you next November!”

This is nothing more than a commercial for your business.

How did that commercial get posted in the Tucson Citizen? Did they pay for it?

The point I was making is that not everybody needs to change their Medicare coverage.  I was pointing out that I could try to “sell” this person different coverage (Medicare Advantage) and make some additional money, but his current coverage is just fine – and his wife thanked me for reminding him of this.  In this Medicare selling season, what most agents are selling is Medicare Advantage, and many seniors are tempted to drop their Medicare Supplement and move to Medicare Advantage.  And most insurance agents are more than willing to push them in the direction of Medicare Advantage.

I’ve written over 150 informative (and sometimes opinionated) posts on my blog, so I think you already know I’m an insurance agent.  I’ve often written about people I’ve met and their issues with their Medicare coverage.   This man is an example of someone who is tempted every year to drop Medicare and go with Medicare Advantage.  He is like many other seniors, except that he has a wife and an insurance agent who tell him to stay put.

Keep up the good work.  I occasionally pass your information to readers of my blog and also have a permanent link on my main page. I especially like all of the comparing and contrasting of plans in your posts and you write clearly and concisely. You have not made any secret about being an insurance agent — it’s not news.  Thank you for spending so much time writing about a complex topic.

Is there any simple way to get rates, coverage, etc., information about existing Medicare HMO’s in our area?   We had the same insurance agent for a couple of years, however, were overcome by the cologne he uses and don’t want to deal with him anymore.  That isn’t a joke, it is reality.  What can we do to understand the differences in coverages?

I have been disabled since 2001 with fibromyalgia & not happy with my current Az Medicare Advantage plan. Every year, I reach my prescription coverage gap, I  end up paying retail, or their discounted prices for my medications. This happens  two to three months out of the year.  This insurance company told me they do not offer supplemental coverage for prescriptions.  I would also like dental coverage. What would you suggest for me.  Thank you for your advise.

Regarding your Part D coverage with your Medicare Advantage plan:  All Part D plans have the donut hole which you have gone into.  In 2011 you will get some help with your costs while you are in the donut hole.  You will get a 50% discount on your brand name drugs when you are in the donut hole.
You should look up the company that makes your drug or drugs that are expensive, especially when you are in the donut hole.  Every company has a “Patient Assistance Program” link on their web page and you can apply to get your drugs for free.

I was talking to one of my clients last week and she told me she is getting her insulin for free from the company that makes it!  So instead of paying a $42 co-pay all year, she gets it for free from the company that makes it – and not just while she is in the donut hole, but all year!
