Tucson’s Wilks wins Falcon Amateur title

University of Arizona golfer Josh Wilks shot a 6-under par 136 to win the Falcon Amateur Golf Tournament last week at Falcon Dunes Golf Club in Phoenix.

Wilks, a Sabino High School grad, beat Scottsdale’s Chris Kessler by a stroke. Dalen Linnerson of Tempe was third at 138.

Tom Sweigart of Tucson placed eighth at 141.

Other Tucson-area or UA players in the top 50 were: Nathan Tyler (UA), three-way tie for 12th at 143; Tucson’s John Tighe, four-way tie for 18th at 145; Cyrus Whitney of Oro Valley and Tucson’s Justin Wardlaw, tied for 46th at 150, and Robert Rose, eight-way tie for 48th at 151.

Park girls champion
Sun Gyoung Park of Vail shot a 9-over 153 to win the championship flight in the 2006 Junior Golf Association of Arizona Girls State Championship last week at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.

In second flight play, Sage Suffecool of Tucson finished fifth at 28-over 172.


Sierra Vista golfer wins
Sierra Vista’s Neal McCarty was the winner last week in the Junior Golf Association of Arizona Junior Boys 13-18 State Championship at Antelope Hills Golf North Course in Prescott.

McCarty shot a 1-under 141 for the title. Tucson’s Alex Johnson tied for fourth at 143.

Also in the top 50 from the Tucson area were Robert Perrott III of Rio Rico, tied for 10th at 146; Kevin Parkhurst of Vail, 27th at 150; Kyle Wilson of Tucson, three-way tie for 33rd at 153; and Tucson’s Ben Esparza, three-way tie for 39th at 155.

LeDuc, Koenig triumph
Darquise LeDuc and Brent Koenig of Omni Tucson National claimed the overall championship last week in the Mixed Stix Tournament at Tubac Golf Resort. Scores were not available.

First flight gross winners were Kelly Loeb and Gary Loeb of Tucson National.

Other local winners were: Judy Gayok and Ted Gayok Tucson National, second flight net; Jane Huff and Bob Huff, Gallery Golf Club, third flight gross; Sharon Mentzer and Richard Mentzer, Oro Valley Country Club, third flight net; Rose Rubio and Ruben Rubio, Quail Creek, fourth flight net; Rebecca Crisp and John Crisp, Oro Valley Country Club, fifth flight, net; Juany Muñoz, Tucson National and Douglas Patek, Pines Golf Club, sixth flight net; and Suzanne Becquet and J.B. Becquet, Quail Creek, seventh flight gross.

Coming up
Sahuaro football fundraiser: The Sahuaro High School football team’s booster club will host a golf tournament at 49er Country Club on July 29. The tournament starts at 7:30 a.m. with lunch to follow.

Cost is $75 for individuals and $280 for foursomes.

Junior golf: The 11th annual Oro Valley Parks & Recreation Junior Golf Championship will be held July 31-Aug. 3. Clinic sessions are July 31-Aug. 1 at Crooked Tree Golf Course and Aug. 2 at the Golf Club at Vistoso, with a tournament Aug. 3 at the El Conquistador Hilton Pusch Ridge course.

Clinic sessions are 7:30-9 a.m. for ages 6-10 and 10-11:30 a.m. for ages 11-17. Cost is $50.
