Rincon/University backs gain 451 yards on ground vs. Panthers
Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside put the odds firmly on the side of the visiting Rincon/University High School football team.
Senior running backs Cody Schaefer and Francis Ravenell led the way as the Rangers pounded host Amphi for 451 yards on the ground in a 35-0 win over the Panthers in a nonconference Class 4A matchup.
“I think they are great running backs,” Rangers coach Matt Johnson said. “The best thing is that they both block for each other.”
Schaefer and Ravenell set the tone as the Rangers capped their first offensive drive of the second quarter with a 2-yard scoring run by senior fullback Justin Saldivar.
Ravenell, the Rangers’ outside running threat, broke loose for a 9-yard run on a fourth-and-3 play from the Amphi 23-yard line that kept the drive alive.
The slippery halfback finished the night with 77 yards rushing and one touchdown, scoring on a juking 6-yard run in the second quarter that increased Rincon’s lead to 13-0.
“The offensive line blocked great. Our fullback blocked great,” Ravenell said. “We all played a good game.”
Schaefer rushed for a game-high 271 yards. He scored in the second quarter on a 35-yard run, and on a 70-yard scamper in the fourth quarter on plays that went inside the defensive ends.
The versatile player also tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Ian Theel in the third quarter.
“We all work hard and it pays off,” Schaefer said. “All the credit goes to our offensive line. It has really improved.”
Senior running back Dimitris Henry paced Amphi’s offensive effort by rushing for 114 yards on 13 carries before being forced out of the game by a leg cramp in the third quarter.
