Illinois connection too much for Arizona

What is it with Illinois-based teams and Arizona teams? It seems like they’ve got Arizona’s number.

Arizona – the Wildcats and the Cardinals – have seen improbable wins disappear in the waning seconds.

It happened two seasons ago to Arizona when it lost its firm grip on the University of Illinois in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, losing in overtime 90-89 after having a 14-point lead with four minutes left to play.

Now comes the Cardinals debacle on Monday night with Arizona blowing a 20-0 lead and losing 24-23 to the Bears. Albeit it wasn’t the NCAA Tournament, but it was on the national stage of “Monday Night Football” and for all intents and purposes its attempt at a shining moment.

At least now Phoenix-area sports fans can’t gloat over UA’s demise in 2005, lest the Tucson area fans remind them of that Monday night in October.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.

For all of the stories that were archived by the Tucson Citizen newspaper's library in a digital archive between 1993 and 2009, go to Morgue Part 2
