2 in Phoenix perish on construction jobs

PHOENIX – Two construction workers in Phoenix died on the job in the past week, authorities said.

The most recent death occurred Saturday, when a worker was killed in a trench collapse.

Phoenix police said the 42-year-old man, whose identity was not immediately released, was working on a 5- to 6-foot-deep trench at a planned Harkins movie theater in west Phoenix when the trench collapsed and he fell in around 3 p.m.

The man, who was partially covered by dirt and concrete, was pronounced dead at the scene, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Joel Tranter said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified of the incident.

On Tuesday, Francisco Lugo, 20, was crushed by a pipe at a different west Phoenix work site.

Citizen Online Archive, 2006-2009

This archive contains all the stories that appeared on the Tucson Citizen's website from mid-2006 to June 1, 2009.

In 2010, a power surge fried a server that contained all of videos linked to dozens of stories in this archive. Also, a server that contained all of the databases for dozens of stories was accidentally erased, so all of those links are broken as well. However, all of the text and photos that accompanied some stories have been preserved.

For all of the stories that were archived by the Tucson Citizen newspaper's library in a digital archive between 1993 and 2009, go to Morgue Part 2
